1.127.1
अग्निं होतारं मन्ये दास्वन्तं वसुं सूनुं सहसो जातवेदसं विप्रं न जातवेदसम | य ऊर्ध्वया सवध्वरो देवो देवाच्या कर्पा |
aghniṃ hotāraṃ manye dāsvantaṃ vasuṃ sūnuṃ sahaso jātavedasaṃ vipraṃ na jātavedasam | ya ūrdhvayā svadhvaro devo devācyā kṛpā |
1. AGNI I hold as herald, the munificent, the gracious, Son of Strength, who knoweth all that live, as holy Singer, knowing all,
1.127.2
घर्तस्य विभ्राष्टिमनु वष्टि शोचिषाजुह्वानस्य सर्पिषः ||
ghṛtasya vibhrāṣṭimanu vaṣṭi śociṣājuhvānasya sarpiṣaḥ ||
Lord of fair rites, a God with form erected turning to the Gods,
1.127.3
यजिष्ठं तवा यजमाना हुवेम जयेष्ठमङगिरसां विप्रमन्मभिर्विप्रेभिः शुक्र मन्मभिः | परिज्मानमिव दयां होतारं चर्षणीनाम |
yajiṣṭhaṃ tvā yajamānā huvema jyeṣṭhamaṅghirasāṃ vipramanmabhirviprebhiḥ śukra manmabhiḥ | parijmānamiva dyāṃ hotāraṃ carṣaṇīnām |
He, when the flame hath sprung forth from the holy oil, the offered fatness, longeth for it with his glow.
1.127.4
शोचिष्केशं वर्षणं यमिमा विशः परावन्तु जूतये विशः ||
śociṣkeśaṃ vṛṣaṇaṃ yamimā viśaḥ prāvantu jūtaye viśaḥ ||
2 We, sacrificing, call on thee best worshipper, the eldest of Aṅgirases, Singer, with hymns, thee, brilliant One! with singers’ hymns;
1.127.5
स हि पुरू चिदोजसा विरुक्मता दीद्यानो भवति दरुहन्तरः परशुर्न दरुहन्तरः | वीळु चिद यस्य सम्र्तौ शरुवद वनेव यत सथिरम |
sa hi purū cidojasā virukmatā dīdyāno bhavati druhantaraḥ paraśurna druhantaraḥ | vīḷu cid yasya samṛtau śruvad vaneva yat sthiram |
Thee, wandering round as ’t were the sky, who art the invoking Priest of men,
1.127.6
निःषहमाणो यमते नायते धन्वासहा नायते ||
niḥṣahamāṇo yamate nāyate dhanvāsahā nāyate ||
Whom, Bull with hair of flame the people must observe, the people that he speed them on.
1.127.7
दर्लःा चिदस्मा अनु दुर्यथा विदे तेजिष्ठाभिररणिभिर्दाष्ट्यवसे.अग्नये दाष्ट्यवसे | पर यः पुरूणि गाहते तक्षद वनेव शोचिषा |
dṛlḥā cidasmā anu duryathā vide tejiṣṭhābhiraraṇibhirdāṣṭyavase.aghnaye dāṣṭyavase | pra yaḥ purūṇi ghāhate takṣad vaneva śociṣā |
3 He with his shining glory blazing far and wide, he verily it is who slayeth demon foes, slayeth the demons like an axe:
1.127.8
सथिरा चिदन्ना नि रिणात्योजसा नि सथिराणि चिदोजसा ||
sthirā cidannā ni riṇātyojasā ni sthirāṇi cidojasā ||
At whose close touch things solid shake, and what is stable yields like trees.
1.127.9
तमस्य पर्क्षमुपरासु धीमहि नक्तं यः सुदर्शतरो दिवातरादप्रायुषे दिवातरात | आदस्यायुर्ग्रभणवद वीळु शर्म न सूनवे |
tamasya pṛkṣamuparāsu dhīmahi naktaṃ yaḥ sudarśataro divātarādaprāyuṣe divātarāt | ādasyāyurghrabhaṇavad vīḷu śarma na sūnave |
Subduing all, he keeps his ground and flinches not, from the skilled archer flinches not.
1.127.10
भक्तमभक्तमवो वयन्तो अजरा अग्नयो वयन्तो अजराः ||
bhaktamabhaktamavo vyanto ajarā aghnayo vyanto ajarāḥ ||
4 To him, as one who knows, even things solid yield: unrough fire-sticks heated hot he gives his gifts to aid. Men offer Agni gifts for aid.
1.127.11
स हि शर्धो न मारुतं तुविष्वणिरप्नस्वतीषूर्वरास्विष्टनिरार्तनास्विष्टनिः | आदद धव्यान्याददिर्यज्ञस्य केतुरर्हणा |
sa hi śardho na mārutaṃ tuviṣvaṇirapnasvatīṣūrvarāsviṣṭanirārtanāsviṣṭaniḥ | ādad dhavyānyādadiryajñasya keturarhaṇā |
He deeply piercing many a thing hews it like wood with fervent glow.
1.127.12
अध समास्य हर्षतो हर्षीवतो विश्वे जुषन्त पन्थां नरः शुभे न पन्थाम ||
adha smāsya harṣato hṛṣīvato viśve juṣanta panthāṃ naraḥ śubhe na panthām ||
Even hard and solid food he crunches with his might, yea, hard and solid food with might.
1.127.13
दविता यदीं कीस्तासो अभिद्यवो नमस्यन्त उपवोचन्त भर्गवो मथ्नन्तो दासा भर्गवः | अग्निरीशे वसूनां शुचिर्यो धर्णिरेषाम |
dvitā yadīṃ kīstāso abhidyavo namasyanta upavocanta bhṛghavo mathnanto dāsā bhṛghavaḥ | aghnirīśe vasūnāṃ śuciryo dharṇireṣām |
5 Here near we place the sacrificial food for him who shines forth fairer in the night than in the day, with life then stronger than by day.
1.127.14
परियानपिधीन्र्वनिषीष्ट मेधिर आ वनिषीष्ट मेधिरह ||
priyānapidhīnrvaniṣīṣṭa medhira ā vaniṣīṣṭa medhirah ||
His life gives sure and firm defence as that one giveth to a son.
1.127.15
विश्वासां तवा विशां पतिं हवामहे सर्वासां समानन्दम्पतिं भुजे सत्यगिर्वाहसं भुजे | अतिथिं मानुषाणां पितुर्न यस्यासया |
viśvāsāṃ tvā viśāṃ patiṃ havāmahe sarvāsāṃ samānandampatiṃ bhuje satyaghirvāhasaṃ bhuje | atithiṃ mānuṣāṇāṃ piturna yasyāsayā |
The during fires enjoy things given and things not given, the during fires enjoy as food.
1.127.16
अमी च विश्वे अम्र्तास आ वयो हव्यादेवेष्वा वयः ||
amī ca viśve amṛtāsa ā vayo havyādeveṣvā vayaḥ ||
6 He, roaring very loudly like the Maruts’ host, in fertile cultivated fields adorable, in desert spots adorable,

तवमग्ने सहसा सहन्तमः शुष्मिन्तमो जायसे देवतातये रयिर्न देवतातये | शुष्मिन्तमो हि ते मदो दयुम्निन्तम उत करतुः |
tvamaghne sahasā sahantamaḥ śuṣmintamo jāyase devatātaye rayirna devatātaye | śuṣmintamo hi te mado dyumnintama uta kratuḥ |
Accepts and eats our offered gifts, ensign of sacrifice by desert;
1.127.18
अध समा ते परि चरन्त्यजर शरुष्टीवानो नाजर ||
adha smā te pari carantyajara śruṣṭīvāno nājara ||
So let all, joying, love his path when he is glad, as men pursue a path for bliss.
1.127.19
पर वो महे सहसा सहस्वत उषर्बुधे पशुषे नाग्नये सतोमो बभूत्वग्नये | परति यदीं हविष्मान विश्वासु कषासु जोगुवे |
pra vo mahe sahasā sahasvata uṣarbudhe paśuṣe nāghnaye stomo babhūtvaghnaye | prati yadīṃ haviṣmān viśvāsu kṣāsu joghuve |
7 Even as they who sang forth hymns, addressed to heaven, the Bhṛgus with their prayer and praise invited him, the Bhṛgus rubbing, offering gifts.
1.127.20
अग्रे रेभो न जरत रषूणां जूर्णिर्होत रषूणाम ||
aghre rebho na jarata ṛṣūṇāṃ jūrṇirhota ṛṣūṇām ||
For radiant Agni, Lord of all these treasures, is exceeding strong.
1.127.21
स नो नेदिष्ठं दद्र्शान आ भराग्ने देवेभिः सचनाःसुचेतुना महो रायाः सुचेतुना | महि शविष्ठ नस कर्धि संचक्षे भुजे अस्यै |
sa no nediṣṭhaṃ dadṛśāna ā bharāghne devebhiḥ sacanāḥsucetunā maho rāyāḥ sucetunā | mahi śaviṣṭha nas kṛdhi saṃcakṣe bhuje asyai |
May he, the wise, accept the grateful coverings, the wise accept the coverings.
1.127.22
महि सतोत्र्भ्यो मघवन सुवीर्यं मथीरुग्रो न शवसा ||
mahi stotṛbhyo maghavan suvīryaṃ mathīrughro na śavasā ||
8 Thee we invoke, the Lord of all our settled homes, common to all, the household's guardian, to enjoy, bearer of true hymns, to enjoy.
