1.23.1
तीव्राः सोमास आ गह्याशीर्वन्तः सुता इमे |
tīvrāḥ somāsa ā ghahyāśīrvantaḥ sutā ime |
1 STRONG are the Somas; come thou nigh; these juices have been mixt with milk:
1.23.2
वायो तान परस्थितान पिब ||
vāyo tān prasthitān piba ||
Drink, Vāyu, the presented draughts.
1.23.3
उभा देवा दिविस्प्र्शेन्द्रवायू हवामहे |
ubhā devā divispṛśendravāyū havāmahe |
2 Both Deities who touch the heaven, Indra and Vāyu we invoke
1.23.4
अस्य सोमस्य पीतये ||
asya somasya pītaye ||
To drink of this our Soma juice.
1.23.5
इन्द्रवायू मनोजुवा विप्रा हवन्त ऊतये |
indravāyū manojuvā viprā havanta ūtaye |
3 The singers' for their aid, invoke Indra and Vāyu, swift as mind,
1.23.6
सहस्राक्षा धियस पती ||
sahasrākṣā dhiyas patī ||
The thousand-eyed, the Lords of thought.
1.23.7
मित्रं वयं हवामहे वरुणं सोमपीतये |
mitraṃ vayaṃ havāmahe varuṇaṃ somapītaye |
4 Mitra and Varuṇa, renowned as Gods of consecrated might,
1.23.8
जज्ञाना पूतदक्षसा ||
jajñānā pūtadakṣasā ||
We call to drink the Soma juice.
1.23.9
रतेन याव रताव्र्धाव रतस्य जयोतिषस पती |
ṛtena yāv ṛtāvṛdhāv ṛtasya jyotiṣas patī |
5 Those who by Law uphold the Law, Lords of the shining light of Law,
1.23.10
ता मित्रावरुणा हुवे ||
tā mitrāvaruṇā huve ||
Mitra I call, and Varuṇa.
1.23.11
वरुणः पराविता भुवन मित्रो विश्वाभिरूतिभिः |
varuṇaḥ prāvitā bhuvan mitro viśvābhirūtibhiḥ |
6 Let Varuṇa be our chief defence, let Mitra guard us with all aids
1.23.12
करतां नः सुराधसः ||
karatāṃ naḥ surādhasaḥ ||
Both make us rich exceedingly.
1.23.13
मरुत्वन्तं हवामह इन्द्रमा सोमपीतये |
marutvantaṃ havāmaha indramā somapītaye |
7 Indra, by Maruts girt, we call to drink the Soma juice: may he
1.23.14
सजूर्गणेन तरिम्पतु ||
sajūrghaṇena trimpatu ||
Sate him in union with his troop.
1.23.15
इन्द्रज्येष्ठा मरुद्गणा देवासः पूषरातयः |
indrajyeṣṭhā marudghaṇā devāsaḥ pūṣarātayaḥ |
8 Gods, Marut hosts whom Indra leads, distributers of Pūṣan's gifts,
1.23.16
विश्वे मम शरुता हवम ||
viśve mama śrutā havam ||
Hearken ye all unto my cry.
1.23.17
हत वर्त्रं सुदानव इन्द्रेण सहसा युजा |
hata vṛtraṃ sudānava indreṇa sahasā yujā |
9 With conquering Indra for ally, strike Vṛtra down, ye bounteous Gods
1.23.18
मा नो दुःशंस ईशत ||
mā no duḥśaṃsa īśata ||
Let not the wicked master us.
1.23.19
विश्वान देवान हवामहे मरुतः सोमपीतये |
viśvān devān havāmahe marutaḥ somapītaye |
10 We call the Universal Gods, and Maruts to the Soma draught,
1.23.20
उग्रा हि पर्श्निमातरः ||
ughrā hi pṛśnimātaraḥ ||
For passing strong are Pṛśni's Sons.
1.23.21
जयतामिव तन्यतुर्मरुतामेति धर्ष्णुया |
jayatāmiva tanyaturmarutāmeti dhṛṣṇuyā |
11 Fierce comes the Maruts’ thundering voice, like that of conquerors, when ye go
1.23.22
यच्छुभं याथना नरः ||
yacchubhaṃ yāthanā naraḥ ||
Forward to victory, O Men.
1.23.23
हस्काराद विद्युतस पर्यतो जाता अवन्तु नः |
haskārād vidyutas paryato jātā avantu naḥ |
12 Born of the laughing lightning. may the Maruts guard us everywhere
1.23.24
मरुतो मर्ळयन्तु नः ||
maruto mṛḷayantu naḥ ||
May they be gracious unto Us.
1.23.25
आ पूषञ्चित्रबर्हिषमाघ्र्णे धरुणं दिवः |
ā pūṣañcitrabarhiṣamāghṛṇe dharuṇaṃ divaḥ |
13 Like some lost animal, drive to us, bright Pūṣan, him who bears up heaven,
1.23.26
आजा नष्टं यथा पशुम ||
ājā naṣṭaṃ yathā paśum ||
Resting on many-coloured grass.
1.23.27
पूषा राजानमाघ्र्णिरपगूळ्हं गुहा हितम |
pūṣā rājānamāghṛṇirapaghūḷhaṃ ghuhā hitam |
14 Pūṣan the Bright has found the King, concealed and hidden in a cave,
1.23.28
अविन्दच्चित्रबर्हिषम ||
avindaccitrabarhiṣam ||
Who rests on grass of many hues.
1.23.29
उतो स मह्यमिन्दुभिः षड युक्ताननुसेषिधत |
uto sa mahyamindubhiḥ ṣaḍ yuktānanuseṣidhat |
15 And may he. duly bring to me the six bound closely, through these drops,
1.23.30
गोभिर्यवं न चर्क्र्षत ||
ghobhiryavaṃ na carkṛṣat ||
As one who ploughs with steers brings corn.
1.23.31
अम्बयो यन्त्यध्वभिर्जामयो अध्वरीयताम |
ambayo yantyadhvabhirjāmayo adhvarīyatām |
16 Along their paths the Mothers go, Sisters of priestly ministrants,
1.23.32
पर्ञ्चतीर्मधुना पयः ||
pṛñcatīrmadhunā payaḥ ||
Mingling their sweetness with the milk.
1.23.33
अमूर्या उप सूर्ये याभिर्वा सूर्यः सह |
amūryā upa sūrye yābhirvā sūryaḥ saha |
17 May Waters gathered near the Sun, and those wherewith the Sun is joined,
1.23.34
ता नो हिन्वन्त्वध्वरम ||
tā no hinvantvadhvaram ||
Speed forth this sacrifice of ours.
1.23.35
अपो देवीरुप हवये यत्र गावः पिबन्ति नः |
apo devīrupa hvaye yatra ghāvaḥ pibanti naḥ |
18 I call the Waters, Goddesses, wherein our cattle quench their thirst;
1.23.36
सिन्दुभ्यः कर्त्वं हविः ||
sindubhyaḥ kartvaṃ haviḥ ||
Oblations to the Streams be given.
1.23.37
अप्स्वन्तरम्र्तमप्सु भेषजमपामुत परशस्तये |
apsvantaramṛtamapsu bheṣajamapāmuta praśastaye |
19 Amrit is in the Waters in the Waters there is healing balm
1.23.38
देवाभवत वाजिनः ||
devābhavata vājinaḥ ||
Be swift, ye Gods, to give them praise.
1.23.39
अप्सु मे सोमो अब्रवीदन्तर्विश्वानि भेषजा |
apsu me somo abravīdantarviśvāni bheṣajā |
20 Within the Waters—Soma thus hath told me—dwell all balms that heal,
1.23.40
अग्निं च विश्वशम्भुवमापश्च विश्वभेषजीः ||
aghniṃ ca viśvaśambhuvamāpaśca viśvabheṣajīḥ ||
And Agni, he who blesseth all. The Waters hold all medicines.
1.23.41
आपः पर्णीत भेषजं वरूथं तन्वे मम |
āpaḥ pṛṇīta bheṣajaṃ varūthaṃ tanve mama |
21 O Waters, teem with medicine to keep my body safe from harm,
1.23.42
जयोक च सूर्यं दर्शे ||
jyok ca sūryaṃ dṛśe ||
So that I long may see the Sun.
1.23.43
इदमापः पर वहत यत किं च दुरितं मयि |
idamāpaḥ pra vahata yat kiṃ ca duritaṃ mayi |
22 Whatever sin is found in me, whatever evil I have wrought.
1.23.44
यद वाहमभिदुद्रोह यद वा शेप उतान्र्तम ||
yad vāhamabhidudroha yad vā śepa utānṛtam ||
If I have lied or falsely sworn, Waters, remove it far from me.
1.23.45
आपो अद्यान्वचारिषं रसेन समगस्महि |
āpo adyānvacāriṣaṃ rasena samaghasmahi |
23 The Waters I this day have sought, and to their moisture have we come:
1.23.46
पयस्वानग्न आगहि तं मा सं सर्ज वर्चसा ||
payasvānaghna āghahi taṃ mā saṃ sṛja varcasā ||
O Agni, rich in milk, come thou, and with thy splendour cover me.
1.23.47
सं माग्ने वर्चसा सर्ज सं परजया समायुषा |
saṃ māghne varcasā sṛja saṃ prajayā samāyuṣā |
24 Fill me with splendour, Agni; give offspring and length of days; the Gods
1.23.48
विद्युर्मेस्य देवा इन्द्रो विद्यात सह रषिभिः ||
vidyurmeasya devā indro vidyāt saha ṛṣibhiḥ ||
Shall know me even as I am, and Indra with the Ṛṣis, know.
