1.25.1
यच्चिद धि ते विशो यथा पर देव वरुण वरतम |
yaccid dhi te viśo yathā pra deva varuṇa vratam |
1 WHATEVER law of thine, O God, O Varua, as we are men,
1.25.2
मिनीमसिद्यवि-दयवि ||
minīmasidyavi-dyavi ||
Day after day we violate.
1.25.3
मा नो वधाय हत्नवे जिहीळानस्य रीरधः |
mā no vadhāya hatnave jihīḷānasya rīradhaḥ |
2 give us not as a prey to death, to be destroyed by thee in wrath,
1.25.4
मा हर्णानस्य मन्यवे ||
mā hṛṇānasya manyave ||
To thy fierce anger when displeased.
1.25.5
वि मर्ळीकाय ते मनो रथीरश्वं न सन्दितम |
vi mṛḷīkāya te mano rathīraśvaṃ na sanditam |
3 To gain thy mercy, Varua, with hymns we bind thy heart, as binds
1.25.6
गीर्भिर्वरुण सीमहि ||
ghīrbhirvaruṇa sīmahi ||
The charioteer his tethered horse.
1.25.7
परा हि मे विमन्यवः पतन्ति वस्यैष्टये |
parā hi me vimanyavaḥ patanti vasyaiṣṭaye |
4 They flee from me dispirited, bent only on obtaining wealth,
1.25.8
वयो न वसतीरुप ||
vayo na vasatīrupa ||
As to their nests the birds of air.
1.25.9
कदा कषत्रश्रियं नरमा वरुणं करामहे |
kadā kṣatraśriyaṃ naramā varuṇaṃ karāmahe |
5 When shall we bring, to be appeased, the Hero, Lord of warrior might,
1.25.10
मर्ळीकायोरुचक्षसम ||
mṛḷīkāyorucakṣasam ||
Him, the far-seeing Varua?
1.25.11
तदित समानमाशाते वेनन्ता न पर युछतः |
tadit samānamāśāte venantā na pra yuchataḥ |
6 This, this with joy they both accept in common: never do they fail
1.25.12
धर्तव्रताय दाशुषे ||
dhṛtavratāya dāśuṣe ||
The ever-faithful worshipper.
1.25.13
वेदा यो वीनां पदमन्तरिक्षेण पतताम |
vedā yo vīnāṃ padamantarikṣeṇa patatām |
7 He knows the path of birds that fly through heaven, and, Sovran of the sea,
1.25.14
वेद नावः समुद्रियः ||
veda nāvaḥ samudriyaḥ ||
He knows the ships that are thereon.
1.25.15
वेद मासो धर्तव्रतो दवादश परजावतः |
veda māso dhṛtavrato dvādaśa prajāvataḥ |
8 True to his holy law, he knows the twelve moons with their progeny:
1.25.16
वेदा य उपजायते ||
vedā ya upajāyate ||
He knows the moon of later birth.
1.25.17
वेद वातस्य वर्तनिमुरोर्र्ष्वस्य बर्हतः |
veda vātasya vartanimurorṛṣvasya bṛhataḥ |
9 He knows the pathway of the wind, the spreading, high, and mighty wind:
1.25.18
वेदा ये अध्यासते ||
vedā ye adhyāsate ||
He knows the Gods who dwell above.
1.25.19
नि षसाद धर्तव्रतो वरुणः पस्त्यास्वा |
ni ṣasāda dhṛtavrato varuṇaḥ pastyāsvā |
10 Varua, true to holy law, sits down among his people; he,
1.25.20
साम्राज्याय सुक्रतुः ||
sāmrājyāya sukratuḥ ||
Most wise, sits there to govern all.
1.25.21
अतो विश्वान्यद्भुता चिकित्वानभि पश्यति |
ato viśvānyadbhutā cikitvānabhi paśyati |
11 From thence
1.25.22
कर्तानि या चकर्त्वा ||
kṛtāni yā cakartvā ||
perceiving
1.25.23
स नो विश्वाहा सुक्रतुरादित्यः सुपथा करत |
sa no viśvāhā sukraturādityaḥ supathā karat |
he beholds all wondrous things, both what hath been,
1.25.24
पर ण आयूंषि तारिषत ||
pra ṇa āyūṃṣi tāriṣat ||
And what hereafter will be done.
1.25.25
बिभ्रद दरापिं हिरण्ययं वरुणो वस्त निर्णिजम |
bibhrad drāpiṃ hiraṇyayaṃ varuṇo vasta nirṇijam |
12 May that ditya, very wise, make fair paths for us all our days:
1.25.26
परि सपशो नि षेदिरे ||
pari spaśo ni ṣedire ||
May he prolong our lives for us.
1.25.27
न यं दिप्सन्ति दिप्सवो न दरुह्वाणो जनानाम |
na yaṃ dipsanti dipsavo na druhvāṇo janānām |
13 Varua, wearing golden mail, hath clad him in a shining robe.
1.25.28
न देवमभिमातयः ||
na devamabhimātayaḥ ||
His spies are seated found about.
1.25.29
उत यो मानुषेष्वा यशश्चक्रे असाम्या |
uta yo mānuṣeṣvā yaśaścakre asāmyā |
14 The God whom enemies threaten not, nor those who tyrannize oer men,
1.25.30
अस्माकमुदरेष्वा ||
asmākamudareṣvā ||
Nor those whose minds are bent on wrong.
1.25.31
परा मे यन्ति धीतयो गावो न गव्यूतीरनु |
parā me yanti dhītayo ghāvo na ghavyūtīranu |
15 He who gives glory to mankind, not glory that is incomplete,
1.25.32
इछन्तीरुरुचक्षसम ||
ichantīrurucakṣasam ||
To our own bodies giving it.
1.25.33
सं नु वोचावहै पुनर्यतो मे मध्वाभ्र्तम |
saṃ nu vocāvahai punaryato me madhvābhṛtam |
16 Yearning for the wide-seeing One, my thoughts move onward unto him,
1.25.34
होतेव कषदसे परियम ||
hoteva kṣadase priyam ||
As kine unto their pastures move.
1.25.35
दर्शं नु विश्वदर्षतं दर्शं रथमधि कषमि |
darśaṃ nu viśvadarṣataṃ darśaṃ rathamadhi kṣami |
17 Once more together let us speak, because my meath is brought: priest-like
1.25.36
एता जुषत मे गिरः ||
etā juṣata me ghiraḥ ||
Thou eatest what is dear to thee.
1.25.37
इमं मे वरुण शरुधी हवमद्या च मर्ळय |
imaṃ me varuṇa śrudhī havamadyā ca mṛḷaya |
18 Now saw I him whom all may see, I saw his car above the earth:
1.25.38
तवामवस्युरा चके ||
tvāmavasyurā cake ||
He hath accepted these my songs.
1.25.39
तवं विश्वस्य मेधिर दिवश्च गमश्च राजसि |
tvaṃ viśvasya medhira divaśca ghmaśca rājasi |
19 Varua, hear this call of mine: be gracious unto us this day
1.25.40
स यामनिप्रति शरुधि ||
sa yāmaniprati śrudhi ||
Longing for help I cried to thee.
1.25.41
उदुत्तमं मुमुग्धि नो वि पाशं मध्यमं चर्त |
uduttamaṃ mumughdhi no vi pāśaṃ madhyamaṃ cṛta |
20 Thou, O wise God, art Lord of all, thou art the King of earth and heaven
1.25.42
अवाधमानि जीवसे ||
avādhamāni jīvase ||
Hear, as thou goest on thy way.
