1.37.1
करीळं वः शर्धो मारुतमनर्वाणं रथेशुभम |
krīḷaṃ vaḥ śardho mārutamanarvāṇaṃ ratheśubham |
1 SING forth, O Kaṇvas, to your band of Maruts unassailable,
1.37.2
कण्वा अभि पर गायत ||
kaṇvā abhi pra ghāyata ||
Sporting, resplendent on their car
1.37.3
ये पर्षतीभिर्र्ष्टिभिः साकं वाशीभिरञ्जिभिः |
ye pṛṣatībhirṛṣṭibhiḥ sākaṃ vāśībhirañjibhiḥ |
2 They who, self-luminous, were born together, with the spotted deer,
1.37.4
अजायन्त सवभानवः ||
ajāyanta svabhānavaḥ ||
Spears, swords, and glittering ornaments.
1.37.5
इहेव शर्ण्व एषां कशा हस्तेषु यद वदान |
iheva śṛṇva eṣāṃ kaśā hasteṣu yad vadān |
3 One hears, as though ’twere close at hand, the cracking of the whips they hold

नि यामञ्चित्रं रञ्जते ||
ni yāmañcitraṃ ṛñjate ||
They gather glory on their way.
1.37.7
पर वः शर्धाय घर्ष्वये तवेषद्युम्नाय शुष्मिणे |
pra vaḥ śardhāya ghṛṣvaye tveṣadyumnāya śuṣmiṇe |
4 Now sing ye forth the God-given hymn to your exultant Marut host,
1.37.8
देवत्तं बरह्म गायत ||
devattaṃ brahma ghāyata ||
The fiercely-vigorous, the strong.
1.37.9
पर शंसा गोष्वघ्न्यं करीळं यच्छर्धो मारुतम |
pra śaṃsā ghoṣvaghnyaṃ krīḷaṃ yacchardho mārutam |
5 Praise ye the Bull among the cows; for ’tis the Maruts’ sportive band:
1.37.10
जम्भे रसस्य वाव्र्धे ||
jambhe rasasya vāvṛdhe ||
It strengthened as it drank the rain.
1.37.11
को वो वर्षिष्ठ आ नरो दिवश्च गमश्च धूतयः |
ko vo varṣiṣṭha ā naro divaśca ghmaśca dhūtayaḥ |
6 Who is your mightiest, Heroes, when, O shakers of the earth and heaven,
1.37.12
यत सीम अन्तं न धूनुथ ||
yat sīm antaṃ na dhūnutha ||
Ye shake them like a garment's hem?
1.37.13
नि वो यामाय मानुषो दध्र उग्राय मन्यवे |
ni vo yāmāya mānuṣo dadhra ughrāya manyave |
7 At your approach man holds him down before the fury of your wrath:
1.37.14
जिहीत पर्वतो गिरिः ||
jihīta parvato ghiriḥ ||
The rugged-jointed mountain yields.
1.37.15
येषाम अज्मेषु पर्थिवी जुजुर्वां इव विश्पतिः |
yeṣām ajmeṣu pṛthivī jujurvāṃ iva viśpatiḥ |
8 They at whose racings forth the earth, like an age-weakened lord of men,
1.37.16
भिया यामेषु रेजते ||
bhiyā yāmeṣu rejate ||
Trembles in terror on their ways.
1.37.17
सथिरं हि जानम एषां वयो मातुर निरेतवे |
sthiraṃ hi jānam eṣāṃ vayo mātur niretave |
9 Strong is their birth: vigour have they to issue from their Mother; strength,
1.37.18
यत सीम अनु दविता शवः ||
yat sīm anu dvitā śavaḥ ||
Yea, even twice enough, is theirs.
1.37.19
उद उ तये सूनवो गिरः काष्ठा अज्मेष्व अत्नत |
ud u tye sūnavo ghiraḥ kāṣṭhā ajmeṣv atnata |
10 And these, the Sons, the Singers, in their racings have enlarged the bounds,
1.37.20
वाश्रा अभिज्ञु यातवे ||
vāśrā abhijñu yātave ||
So that the kine must walk knee-deep.
1.37.21
तयं चिद घा दीर्घम पर्थुम मिहो नपातम अम्र्ध्रम |
tyaṃ cid ghā dīrgham pṛthum miho napātam amṛdhram |
11 Before them, on the ways they go, they drop this offspring of the cloud,
1.37.22
पर चयावयन्ति यामभिः ||
pra cyāvayanti yāmabhiḥ ||
Long, broad, and inexhaustible.
1.37.23
मरुतो यद ध वो बलं जनां अचुच्यवीतन |
maruto yad dha vo balaṃ janāṃ acucyavītana |
12 O Maruts, as your strength is great, so have ye cast men down on earth,
1.37.24
गिरींर अचुच्यवीतन ||
ghirīṃr acucyavītana ||
So have ye made the mountains fall.
1.37.25
यद ध यान्ति मरुतः सं ह बरुवते ऽधवन्न आ |
yad dha yānti marutaḥ saṃ ha bruvate 'dhvann ā |
13 The while the Maruts pass along, they talk together on the way:
1.37.26
शर्णोति कश चिद एषाम ||
śṛṇoti kaś cid eṣām ||
Doth any hear them as they speak?
1.37.27
पर यात शीभम आशुभिः सन्ति कण्वेषु वो दुवः |
pra yāta śībham āśubhiḥ santi kaṇveṣu vo duvaḥ |
14 Come quick with swift steeds, for ye have worshippers among Kaṇva's sons
1.37.28
तत्रो षु मादयाध्वै ||
tatro ṣu mādayādhvai ||
May you rejoice among them well.
1.37.29
अस्ति हि षमा मदाय वः समसि षमा वयम एषाम |
asti hi ṣmā madāya vaḥ smasi ṣmā vayam eṣām |
15 All is prepared for your delight. We are their servants evermore,
1.37.30
विश्वं चिद आयुर जीवसे ||
viśvaṃ cid āyur jīvase ||
To live as long as life may last.
