1.38.1
कद ध नूनं कधप्रियः पिता पुत्रं न हस्तयोः |
kad dha nūnaṃ kadhapriyaḥ pitā putraṃ na hastayoḥ |
1 WHAT now? When will ye take us by both hands, as a dear sire his son,
1.38.2
दधिध्वे वर्क्तबर्हिषः ||
dadhidhve vṛktabarhiṣaḥ ||
Gods, for whom sacred grass is clipped?
1.38.3
कव नूनं कद वो अर्थं गन्ता दिवो न पर्थिव्याः |
kva nūnaṃ kad vo arthaṃ ghantā divo na pṛthivyāḥ |
2 Now whither? To what goal of yours go ye in heaven, and not on earth?
1.38.4
कव वो गावो न रण्यन्ति ||
kva vo ghāvo na raṇyanti ||
Where do your cows disport themselves?
1.38.5
कव वः सुम्ना नव्यांसि मरुतः कव सुविता |
kva vaḥ sumnā navyāṃsi marutaḥ kva suvitā |
3 Where are your newest favours shown? Where, Maruts, your prosperity?
1.38.6
कव विश्वानि सौभगा ||
kv viśvāni saubhaghā ||
Where all your high felicities?
1.38.7
यद यूयम पर्श्निमातरो मर्तासः सयातन |
yad yūyam pṛśnimātaro martāsaḥ syātana |
4 If, O ye Maruts, ye the Sons whom Pṛśni bore, were mortal, and
1.38.8
सतोता वो अम्र्तः सयात ||
stotā vo amṛtaḥ syāt ||
Immortal he who sings your praise.
1.38.9
मा वो मर्गो न यवसे जरिता भूद अजोष्यः |
mā vo mṛgho na yavase jaritā bhūd ajoṣyaḥ |
5 Then never were your praiser loathed like a wild beast in pasture-land,
1.38.10
पथा यमस्य गाद उप ||
pathā yamasya ghād upa ||
Nor should he go on Yama's path.
1.38.11
मो षु णः परा-परा निर्र्तिर दुर्हणा वधीत |
mo ṣu ṇaḥ parā-parā nirṛtir durhaṇā vadhīt |
6 Let not destructive plague on plague hard to be conquered, strike its down:
1.38.12
पदीष्ट तर्ष्णया सह ||
padīṣṭa tṛṣṇayā saha ||
Let each, with drought, depart from us.
1.38.13
सत्यं तवेषा अमवन्तो धन्वञ चिद आ रुद्रियासः |
satyaṃ tveṣā amavanto dhanvañ cid ā rudriyāsaḥ |
7 Truly, they the fierce and mighty Sons of Rudra send their windless
1.38.14
मिहं कर्ण्वन्त्य अवाताम ||
mihaṃ kṛṇvanty avātām ||
Rain e’en on the desert places.
1.38.15
वाश्रेव विद्युन मिमाति वत्सं न माता सिषक्ति |
vāśreva vidyun mimāti vatsaṃ na mātā siṣakti |
8 Like a cow the lightning lows and follows, motherlike, her youngling,
1.38.16
यद एषां वर्ष्टिर असर्जि ||
yad eṣāṃ vṛṣṭir asarji ||
When their rain-flood hath been loosened.
1.38.17
दिवा चित तमः कर्ण्वन्ति पर्जन्येनोदवाहेन |
divā cit tamaḥ kṛṇvanti parjanyenodavāhena |
9 When they inundate the earth they spread forth darkness e’en in day time,
1.38.18
यत पर्थिवीं वयुन्दन्ति ||
yat pṛthivīṃ vyundanti ||
With the water-laden rain-cloud.
1.38.19
अध सवनान मरुतां विश्वम आ सद्म पार्थिवम |
adha svanān marutāṃ viśvam ā sadma pārthivam |
10 O Maruts, at your voice's sound this earthly habitation shakes,
1.38.20
अरेजन्त पर मानुषाः ||
arejanta pra mānuṣāḥ ||
And each man reels who dwells therein.
1.38.21
मरुतो वीळुपाणिभिश चित्रा रोधस्वतीर अनु |
maruto vīḷupāṇibhiś citrā rodhasvatīr anu |
11 O Maruts, with your strong-hoofed steeds, unhindered in their courses, haste
1.38.22
यातेम अखिद्रयामभिः ||
yātem akhidrayāmabhiḥ ||
Along the bright embanked streams.
1.38.23
सथिरा वः सन्तु नेमयो रथा अश्वास एषाम |
sthirā vaḥ santu nemayo rathā aśvāsa eṣām |
12 Firm be the fellies of your wheels, steady your horses and your cars,
1.38.24
सुसंस्क्र्ता अभीशवः ||
susaṃskṛtā abhīśavaḥ ||
And may your reins be fashioned well.
1.38.25
अछा वदा तना गिरा जरायै बरह्मणस पतिम |
achā vadā tanā ghirā jarāyai brahmaṇas patim |
13 Invite thou hither with this song, for praise, Agni the Lord of Prayer,
1.38.26
अग्निम मित्रं न दर्शतम ||
aghnim mitraṃ na darśatam ||
Him who is fair as Mitra is.
1.38.27
मिमीहि शलोकम आस्यपर्जन्य इव ततनः |
mimīhi ślokam āsyaparjanya iva tatanaḥ |
14 Form in thy mouth the hymn of praise expand thee like, a rainy cloud
1.38.28
गाय गायत्रम उक्थ्यम ||
ghāya ghāyatram ukthyam ||
Sing forth the measured eulogy.
1.38.29
वन्दस्व मारुतं गणं तवेषम पनस्युम अर्किणम |
vandasva mārutaṃ ghaṇaṃ tveṣam panasyum arkiṇam |
15 Sing glory to the Marut host, praiseworthy, tuneful, vigorous:
1.38.30
अस्मे वर्द्धा असन्न इह ||
asme vṛddhā asann iha ||
Here let the Strong Ones dwell with us.
