1.61.1
अस्मा इदु पर तवसे तुराय परयो न हर्मि सतोमं माहिनाय |
asmā idu pra tavase turāya prayo na harmi stomaṃ māhināya |
1 EVEN to him, swift, strong and high. exalted, I bring my song of praise as dainty viands,
1.61.2
रचीषमायाध्रिगव ओहमिन्द्राय बरह्माणि राततमा ||
ṛcīṣamāyādhrighava ohamindrāya brahmāṇi rātatamā ||
My thought to him resistless, praise-deserving, prayers offered most especially to Indra.
1.61.3
अस्मा इदु परय इव पर यंसि भराम्याङगूषं बाधे सुव्र्क्ति |
asmā idu praya iva pra yaṃsi bharāmyāṅghūṣaṃ bādhe suvṛkti |
2 Praise, like oblation, I present, and utter aloud my song, my fair hymn to the Victor.
1.61.4
इन्द्राय हर्दा मनसा मनीषा परत्नाय पत्ये धियोमर्जयन्त ||
indrāya hṛdā manasā manīṣā pratnāya patye dhiyomarjayanta ||
For Indra, who is Lord of old, the singers have decked their lauds with heart and mind and spirit.
1.61.5
अस्मा इदु तयमुपमं सवर्षां भराम्याङगूषमास्येन |
asmā idu tyamupamaṃ svarṣāṃ bharāmyāṅghūṣamāsyena |
3 To him then with my lips mine adoration, winning heaven's light, most excellent, I offer,
1.61.6
मंहिष्ठमछोक्तिभिर्मतीनां सुव्र्क्तिभिः सूरिं वाव्र्धध्यै ||
maṃhiṣṭhamachoktibhirmatīnāṃ suvṛktibhiḥ sūriṃ vāvṛdhadhyai ||
To magnify with songs of invocation and with fair hymns the Lord, most bounteous Giver.
1.61.7
अस्मा इदु सतोमं सं हिनोमि रथं न तष्टेव तत्सिनाय |
asmā idu stomaṃ saṃ hinomi rathaṃ na taṣṭeva tatsināya |
4 Even for him I frame a laud, as fashions the wright a chariot for the man who needs it,—
1.61.8
गिरश्च गिर्वाहसे सुव्र्क्तीन्द्राय विश्वमिन्वं मेधिराय ||
ghiraśca ghirvāhase suvṛktīndrāya viśvaminvaṃ medhirāya ||
Praises to him who gladly hears our praises, a hymn well-formed, all-moving, to wise Indra.
1.61.9
अस्मा इदु सप्तिमिव शरवस्येन्द्रायार्कं जुह्वा समञ्जे |
asmā idu saptimiva śravasyendrāyārkaṃ juhvā samañje |
5 So with my tongue I deck, to please that Indra, my hymn, as ’twere a horse, through love of glory,
1.61.10
वीरं दानौकसं वन्दध्यै पुरां गूर्तश्रवसं दर्माणम ||
vīraṃ dānaukasaṃ vandadhyai purāṃ ghūrtaśravasaṃ darmāṇam ||
To reverence the Hero, bounteous Giver, famed far and wide, destroyer of the castles.
1.61.11
अस्मा इदु तवष्टा तक्षद वज्रं सवपस्तमं सवर्यं रणाय |
asmā idu tvaṣṭā takṣad vajraṃ svapastamaṃ svaryaṃ raṇāya |
6 Even for him hath Tvaṣṭar forged the thunder, most deftly wrought, celestial, for the battle,
1.61.12
वर्त्रस्य चिद विदद येन मर्म तुजन्नीशानस्तुजता कियेधाः ||
vṛtrasya cid vidad yena marma tujannīśānastujatā kiyedhāḥ ||
Wherewith he reached the vital parts of Vṛtra, striking-the vast, the mighty with the striker.
1.61.13
अस्येदु मातुः सवनेषु सद्यो महः पितुं पपिवाञ्चार्वन्ना |
asyedu mātuḥ savaneṣu sadyo mahaḥ pituṃ papivāñcārvannā |
7 As soon as, at libations of his mother, great Viṣṇu had drunk up the draught, he plundered.
1.61.14
मुषायद विष्णुः पचतं सहीयान विध्यद वराहन्तिरो अद्रिमस्ता ||
muṣāyad viṣṇuḥ pacataṃ sahīyān vidhyad varāhantiro adrimastā ||
The dainty cates, the cooked mess; but One stronger transfixed the wild boar, shooting through the mountain.
1.61.15
अस्मा इदु गनाश्चिद देवपत्नीरिन्द्रायार्कमहिहत्य ऊवुः |
asmā idu ghnāścid devapatnīrindrāyārkamahihatya ūvuḥ |
8 To him, to Indra, when he slew the Dragon, the Dames, too, Consorts of the Gods, wove praises.
1.61.16
परि दयावाप्र्थिवी जभ्र उर्वी नास्य ते महिमानं परिष्टः ||
pari dyāvāpṛthivī jabhra urvī nāsya te mahimānaṃ pariṣṭaḥ ||
The mighty heaven and earth hath he encompassed: thy greatness heaven and earth, combined, exceed not.
1.61.17
अस्येदेव पर रिरिचे महित्वं दिवस पर्थिव्याः पर्यन्तरिक्षात |
asyedeva pra ririce mahitvaṃ divas pṛthivyāḥ paryantarikṣāt |
9 Yea, of a truth, his magnitude surpasseth the magnitude of earth, mid-air, and heaven.
1.61.18
सवराळ इन्द्रो दम आ विश्वगूर्तः सवरिरमत्रो ववक्षे रणाय ||
svarāḷ indro dama ā viśvaghūrtaḥ svariramatro vavakṣe raṇāya ||
Indra, approved by all men, self-resplendent, waxed in his home, loud-voiced and strong for battle.
1.61.19
अस्येदेव शवसा शुषन्तं वि वर्श्चद वज्रेण वर्त्रमिन्द्रः |
asyedeva śavasā śuṣantaṃ vi vṛścad vajreṇa vṛtramindraḥ |
10 Through his own strength Indra with bolt of thunder cut piece-meal Vṛtra, drier up of waters.
1.61.20
गा न वराणा अवनीरमुञ्चदभि शरवो दावने सचेताः ||
ghā na vrāṇā avanīramuñcadabhi śravo dāvane sacetāḥ ||
He let the floods go free, like cows imprisoned, for glory, with a heart inclined to bounty.
1.61.21
अस्येदु तवेषसा रन्त सिन्धवः परि यद वज्रेण सीमयछत |
asyedu tveṣasā ranta sindhavaḥ pari yad vajreṇa sīmayachat |
11 The rivers played, through his impetuous splendour, since with his bolt he compassed them on all sides.
1.61.22
ईशानक्र्द दाशुषे दशस्यन तुर्वीतये गाधं तुर्वणिः कः ||
īśānakṛd dāśuṣe daśasyan turvītaye ghādhaṃ turvaṇiḥ kaḥ ||
Using his might and favouring him who worshipped, he made a ford, victorious, for Turvīti.
1.61.23
अस्मा इदु पर भरा तूतुजानो वर्त्राय वज्रमीशानः कियेधाः |
asmā idu pra bharā tūtujāno vṛtrāya vajramīśānaḥ kiyedhāḥ |
12 Vast, with thine ample power, with eager movement, against this Vṛtra cast thy bolt of thunder.
1.61.24
गोर्न पर्व वि रदा तिरश्चेष्यन्नर्णांस्यपां चरध्यै ||
ghorna parva vi radā tiraśceṣyannarṇāṃsyapāṃ caradhyai ||
Rend thou his joints, as of an ox, dissevered, with bolt oblique, that floods of rain may follow.
1.61.25
अस्येदु पर बरूहि पूर्व्याणि तुरस्य कर्माणि नव्य उक्थैः |
asyedu pra brūhi pūrvyāṇi turasya karmāṇi navya ukthaiḥ |
13 Sing with new lauds his exploits wrought aforetime, the deeds of him, yea, him who moveth swiftly,
1.61.26
युधे यदिष्णान आयुधान्य रघायमाणो निरिणाति शत्रून ||
yudhe yadiṣṇāna āyudhāny ṛghāyamāṇo niriṇāti śatrūn ||
When, hurling forth his weapons in the battle, he with impetuous wrath lays low the foemen.
1.61.27
अस्येदु भिया गिरयश्च दर्ळ्हा दयावा च भूमा जनुषस्तुजेते |
asyedu bhiyā ghirayaśca dṛḷhā dyāvā ca bhūmā januṣastujete |
14 When he, yea, he, comes forth the firm. Set mountains and the whole heaven and earth, tremble for terror.
1.61.28
उपो वेनस्य जोगुवान ओणिं सद्यो भुवद वीर्याय नोधाः ||
upo venasya joghuvāna oṇiṃ sadyo bhuvad vīryāya nodhāḥ ||
May Nodhas, ever praising the protection of that dear Friend, gain quickly strength heroic.
1.61.29
अस्मा इदु तयदनु दाय्येषामेको यद वव्ने भूरेरीशानः |
asmā idu tyadanu dāyyeṣāmeko yad vavne bhūrerīśānaḥ |
15 Now unto him of these things hath been given what he who rules alone o’er much, electeth.
1.61.30
परैतशं सूर्ये पस्प्र्धानं सौवश्व्ये सुष्विमावदिन्द्रः ||
praitaśaṃ sūrye paspṛdhānaṃ sauvaśvye suṣvimāvadindraḥ ||
Indra hath helped Etaśa, Soma-presser, contending in the race of steeds with Sūrya.
1.61.31
एवा ते हारियोजना सुव्र्क्तीन्द्र बरह्माणि गोतमासो अक्रन |
evā te hāriyojanā suvṛktīndra brahmāṇi ghotamāso akran |
16 Thus to thee, Indra, yoker of Bay Coursers, the Gotamas have brought their prayers to please thee.
1.61.32
ऐषु विश्वपेशसं धियं धाः परातर मक्षू धियावसुर जगम्यात||
aiṣu viśvapeśasaṃ dhiyaṃ dhāḥ prātar makṣū dhiyāvasur jaghamyāt||
Bestow upon them thought, decked with all beauty. May he, enriched with prayer, come soon and early.
