1.80.1
इत्था हि सोम इन मदे बरह्मा चकार वर्धनम |
itthā hi soma in made brahmā cakāra vardhanam |
1. THUS in the Soma, in wild joy the Brahman hath exalted thee:
1.80.2
शविष्ठ वज्रिन्नोजसा पर्थिव्या निः शशा अहिमर्चन्ननु सवराज्यम ||
śaviṣṭha vajrinnojasā pṛthivyā niḥ śaśā ahimarcannanu svarājyam ||
Thou, mightiest thunder-armed, hast driven by force the Dragon from the earth, lauding thine own imperial sway.
1.80.3
स तवामदद वर्षा मदः सोमः शयेनाभ्र्तः सुतः |
sa tvāmadad vṛṣā madaḥ somaḥ śyenābhṛtaḥ sutaḥ |
2 The mighty flowing Soma-draught, brought by the Hawk, hath gladdened thee,
1.80.4
येनाव्र्त्रं निरद्भ्यो जघन्थ वज्रिन्नोजसार्चन्न... ||
yenāvṛtraṃ niradbhyo jaghantha vajrinnojasārcann... ||
That in thy strength, O Thunderer, thou hast struck down Vṛtra from the floods, lauding thine own imperial sway.
1.80.5
परेह्यभीहि धर्ष्णुहि न ते वज्रो नि यंसते |
prehyabhīhi dhṛṣṇuhi na te vajro ni yaṃsate |
3 Go forward, meet the foe, be bold; thy bolt of thunder is not checked.
1.80.6
इन्द्र नर्म्णं हि ते शवो हनो वर्त्रं जया अपो.अर्चन्न... ||
indra nṛmṇaṃ hi te śavo hano vṛtraṃ jayā apo.arcann... ||
Manliness, Indra, is thy might: stay Vṛtra, make the waters thine, lauding thine own imperial sway.
1.80.7
निरिन्द्र भूम्या अधि वर्त्रं जघन्थ निर्दिवः |
nirindra bhūmyā adhi vṛtraṃ jaghantha nirdivaḥ |
4 Thou smotest Vṛtra from the earth, smotest him, Indra, from the sky.
1.80.8
सर्जा मरुत्वतीरव जीवधन्या इमा अपो.अर्चन्न... ||
sṛjā marutvatīrava jīvadhanyā imā apo.arcann... ||
Let these life-fostering waters flow attended by the Marut host, lauding thine own imperial sway.
1.80.9
इन्द्रो वर्त्रस्य दोधतः सानुं वज्रेण हीळितः |
indro vṛtrasya dodhataḥ sānuṃ vajreṇa hīḷitaḥ |
5 The wrathful Indra with his bolt of thunder rushing on the foe,

अभिक्रम्याव जिघ्नते.अपः सर्माय चोदयन्नर्चन्न... ||
abhikramyāva jighnate.apaḥ sarmāya codayannarcann... ||
Smote fierce on trembling Vṛtra's back, and loosed the waters free to run, lauding his own imperial sway.
1.80.11
अधि सानौ नि जिघ्नते वज्रेण शतपर्वणा |
adhi sānau ni jighnate vajreṇa śataparvaṇā |
6 With hundred-jointed thunderbolt Indra hath struck him on the back,
1.80.12
मन्दान इन्द्रो अन्धसः सखिभ्यो गातुमिछत्यर्चन्न... ||
mandāna indro andhasaḥ sakhibhyo ghātumichatyarcann... ||
And, while rejoicing in the juice, seeketh prosperity for friends, lauding his own imperial sway.
1.80.13
इन्द्र तुभ्यमिदद्रिवो.अनुत्तं वज्रिन वीर्यम |
indra tubhyamidadrivo.anuttaṃ vajrin vīryam |
7 Indra, unconquered might is thine, Thunderer, Caster of the Stone;
1.80.14
यद ध तयम्मायिनं मर्गं तमु तवं माययावधीरर्चन्न... ||
yad dha tyammāyinaṃ mṛghaṃ tamu tvaṃ māyayāvadhīrarcann... ||
For thou with thy surpassing power smotest to death the guileful beast, lauding thine own imperial sway.
1.80.15
वि ते वज्रासो अस्थिरन नवतिं नाव्या अनु |
vi te vajrāso asthiran navatiṃ nāvyā anu |
8 Far over ninety spacious floods thy thunderbolts were cast abroad:

महत त इन्द्र वीर्यं बाह्वोस्ते बलं हितमर्चन्न... ||
mahat ta indra vīryaṃ bāhvoste balaṃ hitamarcann... ||
Great, Indra, is thy hero might, and strength is seated in thine arms, lauding thine own imperial sway.
1.80.17
सहस्रं साकमर्चत परि षटोभत विंशतिः |
sahasraṃ sākamarcata pari ṣṭobhata viṃśatiḥ |
9 Laud him a thousand all at once, shout twenty forth the hymn of praise.
1.80.18
शतैनमन्वनोनवुरिन्द्राय बरह्मोद्यतमर्चन्न... ||
śatainamanvanonavurindrāya brahmodyatamarcann... ||
Hundreds have sung aloud to him, to Indra hath the prayer been raised, lauding his own imperial sway.
1.80.19
इन्द्रो वर्त्रस्य तविषीं निरहन सहसा सहः |
indro vṛtrasya taviṣīṃ nirahan sahasā sahaḥ |
10 Indra hath smitten down the power of Vṛtra,—might with stronger might.
1.80.20
महत तदस्य पौंस्यं वर्त्रं जघन्वानस्र्जदर्चन्न... ||
mahat tadasya pauṃsyaṃ vṛtraṃ jaghanvānasṛjadarcann... ||
This was his manly exploit, he slew Vṛtra and let loose the floods, lauding his own imperial sway.
1.80.21
इमे चित तव मन्यवे वेपेते भियसा मही |
ime cit tava manyave vepete bhiyasā mahī |
11 Yea, even this great Pair of Worlds trembled in terror at thy wrath,

यदिन्द्र वज्रिन्नोजसा वर्त्रं मरुत्वानवधीरर्चन्न... ||
yadindra vajrinnojasā vṛtraṃ marutvānavadhīrarcann... ||
When, Indra, Thunderer, Marut-girt, thou slewest Vṛtra in thy strength, lauding thine own imperial sway.
1.80.23
न वेपसा न तन्यतेन्द्रं वर्त्रो वि बीभयत |
na vepasā na tanyatendraṃ vṛtro vi bībhayat |
12 But Vṛtra scared not Indra with his shaking or his thunder roar.
1.80.24
अभ्येनं वज्र आयसः सहस्रभ्र्ष्टिरायतार्चन्न... ||
abhyenaṃ vajra āyasaḥ sahasrabhṛṣṭirāyatārcann... ||
On him that iron thunderbolt fell fiercely with its thousand points, lauding his own imperial sway.
1.80.25
यद वर्त्रं तव चशनिं वज्रेण समयोधयः |
yad vṛtraṃ tava caśaniṃ vajreṇa samayodhayaḥ |
13 When with the thunder thou didst make thy dart and Vṛtra meet in war,

अहिमिन्द्रजिघांसतो दिवि ते बद्बधे शवो.अर्चन्न... ||
ahimindrajighāṃsato divi te badbadhe śavo.arcann... ||
Thy might, O Indra, fain to slay the Dragon, was set firm in heaven, lauding thine own imperial sway.
1.80.27
अभिष्टने ते अद्रिवो यत सथा जगच्च रेजते |
abhiṣṭane te adrivo yat sthā jaghacca rejate |
14 When at thy shout, O Thunder-armed, each thing both fixed and moving shook,

तवष्टा चित तव मन्यव इन्द्र वेविज्यते भियार्चन्न... ||
tvaṣṭā cit tava manyava indra vevijyate bhiyārcann... ||
E’en Tvaṣṭar trembled at thy wrath and quaked with fear because of thee, lauding thine own imperial sway.
1.80.29
नहि नु यादधीमसीन्द्रं को वीर्या परः |
nahi nu yādadhīmasīndraṃ ko vīryā paraḥ |
15 There is not, in our knowledge, one who passeth Indra in his strength:
1.80.30
तस्मिन नर्म्णमुत करतुं देवा ओजांसि सं दधुरर्चन्न... ||
tasmin nṛmṇamuta kratuṃ devā ojāṃsi saṃ dadhurarcann... ||
In him the Deities have stored manliness, insight, power and might, lauding his own imperial sway.
1.80.31
यमथर्व मनुष पिता दध्यं धियमत्नत |
yamatharva manuṣ pitā dadhyaṃ dhiyamatnata |
16 Still as of old, whatever rite Atharvan, Manus sire of all,
1.80.32
तस्मिन बरह्माणि पुर्वथेन्द्र उक्था समग्मतार्चन्न... ||
tasmin brahmāṇi purvathendra ukthā samaghmatārcann... ||
Dadhyach performed, their prayer and praise united in that Indra meet, lauding his own imperial sway.
