10.22.1
कुह शरुत इन्द्रः कस्मिन्नद्य जने मित्रो न शरुयते |
kuha śruta indraḥ kasminnadya jane mitro na śruyate |
1. WHERE is famed Indra heard of? With what folk is he renowned to-day as Mitra is,—
10.22.2
रषीणां वा यः कषये गुहा व चर्क्र्षे गिर ||
ṛṣīṇāṃ vā yaḥ kṣaye ghuhā va carkṛṣe ghira ||
Who in the home of Ṛṣis and in secret is extolled with song?
10.22.3
इह शरुत इन्द्रो अस्मे अद्य सतवे वज्र्य रचीषमः |
iha śruta indro asme adya stave vajry ṛcīṣamaḥ |
2 Even here is Indra famed, and among us this day the glorious Thunderer is praised,
10.22.4
मित्रो नयो जनेष्वा यशश्चक्रे असाम्या ||
mitro nayo janeṣvā yaśaścakre asāmyā ||
He who like Mitra mid the folk hath won complete and full renown.
10.22.5
महो यस पतिः शवसो असाम्या महो नर्म्णस्य तूतुजिः |
maho yas patiḥ śavaso asāmyā maho nṛmṇasya tūtujiḥ |
3 He who is Sovran Lord of great and perfect strength, exerter of heroic might,
10.22.6
भर्ता वज्रस्य धर्ष्णोः पिता पुत्रमिव परियम ||
bhartā vajrasya dhṛṣṇoḥ pitā putramiva priyam ||
Who bears the fearless thunder as a father bears his darling son.
10.22.7
युजानो अश्व वातस्य धुनी देवो देवस्य वज्रिवः |
yujāno aśva vātasya dhunī devo devasya vajrivaḥ |
4 Harnessing to thy car, as God, two blustering Steeds Of the Wind-God, O Thunderer,
10.22.8
सयन्तपथा विरुक्मता सर्जान सतोष्यध्वनः ||
syantapathā virukmatā sṛjāna stoṣyadhvanaḥ ||
That speed along the shining path, thou making ways art glorified.
10.22.9
तवं तया चिद वातस्याश्वागा रज्रा तमना वहध्यै |
tvaṃ tyā cid vātasyāśvāghā ṛjrā tmanā vahadhyai |
5 Even to these dark Steeds of Wind thou of thyself hast come to ride,
10.22.10
ययोर्देवो न मर्त्यो यन्ता नकिर्विदाय्यः ||
yayordevo na martyo yantā nakirvidāyyaḥ ||
Of which no driver may be found, none, be he God or mortal man.
10.22.11
अध गमन्तोशना पर्छते वां कदर्था न आ गर्हम |
adha ghmantośanā pṛchate vāṃ kadarthā na ā ghṛham |
6 When ye approach, men ask you, thee and Uśanā: Why come ye to our dwelling-place?
10.22.12
आजग्मथुः पराकाद दिवश्च गमश्च मर्त्यम ||
ājaghmathuḥ parākād divaśca ghmaśca martyam ||
Why are ye come to mortal man from distant realms of eapth and heaven?
10.22.13
आ न इन्द्र पर्क्षसे.अस्माकं बरह्मोद्यतम |
ā na indra pṛkṣase.asmākaṃ brahmodyatam |
7 O Indra, thou shalt speak us fair: our holy prayer is offered up.
10.22.14
तत तवायाचामहे.अवः शुष्णं यद धन्नमानुषम ||
tat tvāyācāmahe.avaḥ śuṣṇaṃ yad dhannamānuṣam ||
We pray to thee for help as thou didst strike the monster Śuṣṇa dead.
10.22.15
अकर्मा दस्युरभि नो अमन्तुरन्यव्रतो अमानुषः |
akarmā dasyurabhi no amanturanyavrato amānuṣaḥ |
8 Around us is the Dasyu, riteless, void of sense, inhuman, keeping alien laws.
10.22.16
तवन्तस्यामित्रहन वधर्दासस्य दम्भय ||
tvantasyāmitrahan vadhardāsasya dambhaya ||
Baffle, thou Slayer of the foe, the weapon which this Dāsa wields.
10.22.17
तवं न इन्द्र शूर शूरैरुत तवोतासो बर्हणा |
tvaṃ na indra śūra śūrairuta tvotāso barhaṇā |
9 Hero with Heroes, thou art ours: yea, strong are they whom thou dost help.
10.22.18
पुरुत्राते वि पूर्तयो नवन्त कषोणयो यथा ||
purutrāte vi pūrtayo navanta kṣoṇayo yathā ||
In many a place are thy full gifts, and men, like vassals, sing thy praise.
10.22.19
तवं तान वर्त्रहत्ये चोदयो नॄन कार्पाणे शूर वज्रिवः |
tvaṃ tān vṛtrahatye codayo nṝn kārpāṇe śūra vajrivaḥ |
10 Urge thou these heroes on to slay the enemy, brave Thunderer! in the fight with swords.
10.22.20
गुहा यदी कवीनां विशां नक्षत्रशवसाम ||
ghuhā yadī kavīnāṃ viśāṃ nakṣatraśavasām ||
Even when hid among the tribes of Sages numerous as stars.
10.22.21
मक्षू ता त इन्द्र दानाप्नस आक्षाणे शूर वज्रिवः |
makṣū tā ta indra dānāpnasa ākṣāṇe śūra vajrivaḥ |
11 Swift come those gifts of thine whose hand is prompt to rend and burn, O Hero Thunder-armed:
10.22.22
यद ध शुष्णस्य दम्भयो जातं विश्वं सयावभिः ||
yad dha śuṣṇasya dambhayo jātaṃ viśvaṃ sayāvabhiḥ ||
As thou with thy Companions didst destroy the whole of SuSnia's brood.
10.22.23
माकुध्र्यगिन्द्र शूर वस्वीरस्मे भूवन्नभिष्टयः |
mākudhryaghindra śūra vasvīrasme bhūvannabhiṣṭayaḥ |
12 Let not thine excellent assistance come to us, O Hero Indra, profitless.
10.22.24
वयं-वयं त आसां सुम्ने सयाम वज्रिवः ||
vayaṃ-vayaṃ ta āsāṃ sumne syāma vajrivaḥ ||
May we, may we enjoy the bliss of these thy favours, Thunderer!
10.22.25
अस्मे ता त इन्द्र सन्तु सत्याहिंसन्तीरुपस्प्र्शः |
asme tā ta indra santu satyāhiṃsantīrupaspṛśaḥ |
13 May those soft impulses of thine, O Indra, be fruitful and innocent to us.
10.22.26
विद्यामयासां भुजो धेनूनां न वज्रिवः ||
vidyāmayāsāṃ bhujo dhenūnāṃ na vajrivaḥ ||
May we know these whose treasures are like those of milch-kine, Thunderer!
10.22.27
अहस्ता यदपदी वर्धत कषाः शचीभिर्वेद्यानाम |
ahastā yadapadī vardhata kṣāḥ śacībhirvedyānām |
14 That Earth, through power of knowing things that may be known, handless and footless yet might thrive,
10.22.28
शुष्णं परि परदक्षिणिद विश्वायवे नि शिश्नथः ||
śuṣṇaṃ pari pradakṣiṇid viśvāyave ni śiśnathaḥ ||
Thou slewest, turning to the right, gu;na for every living man.
10.22.29
पिबा-पिबेदिन्द्र शूर सोमं मा रिषण्यो वसवान वसुःसन |
pibā-pibedindra śūra somaṃ mā riṣaṇyo vasavāna vasuḥsan |
15 Drink, drink the Soma, Hero Indra; be not withheld as thou art good, O Treasure-giver.
10.22.30
उत तरायस्व गर्णतो मघोनो महश्च रायो रेवतस्क्र्धी नः ||
uta trāyasva ghṛṇato maghono mahaśca rāyo revataskṛdhī naḥ ||
Preserve the singers and our liberal princes, and make us wealthy with abundant riches.
