10.28.1
विश्वो हयन्यो अरिराजगाम ममेदह शवशुरो न जगाम |
viśvo hyanyo arirājaghāma mamedaha śvaśuro na jaghāma |
1. Now all my other friends are here assembled: my Sire-in-law alone hath not come hither.
10.28.2
जक्षीयाद धना उत सोमं पपीयात सवाशितः पुनरस्तं जगायात ||
jakṣīyād dhanā uta somaṃ papīyāt svāśitaḥ punarastaṃ jaghāyāt ||
So might he eat the grain and drink the Soma, and, satisfied, return unto; his dwelling.
10.28.3
स रोरुवद वर्षभस्तिग्मश्र्न्गो वर्ष्मन तस्थाु वरिमन्नाप्र्थिव्याः |
sa roruvad vṛṣabhastighmaśṛngho varṣman tasthāu varimannāpṛthivyāḥ |
2 Loud belloweth the Bull whose horns are sharpened: upon the height above earth's breadth he standeth.
10.28.4
विश्वेष्वेनं वर्जनेषु पामि यो मे कुक्षिसुतसोमः पर्णाति ||
viśveṣvenaṃ vṛjaneṣu pāmi yo me kukṣisutasomaḥ pṛṇāti ||
That man I guard and save in all his troubles who fills my flanks when he hath shed the Soma.
10.28.5
अद्रिणा ते मन्दिन इन्द्र तूयान सुन्वन्ति सोमान पिबसि तवमेशाम |
adriṇā te mandina indra tūyān sunvanti somān pibasi tvameśām |
3 Men with the stone press out for thee, O Indra, strong, gladdening Soma, and thereof thou drinkest.
10.28.6
पचन्ति ते वर्षभानत्सि तेषां पर्क्षेण यन्मघवन हूयमानः ||
pacanti te vṛṣabhānatsi teṣāṃ pṛkṣeṇa yanmaghavan hūyamānaḥ ||
Bulls they dress for thee, and of these thou eatest when, Maghavan, with food thou art invited.
10.28.7
इदं सु मे जरितरा चिकिद्धि परतीपं शापं नद्योवहन्ति |
idaṃ su me jaritarā cikiddhi pratīpaṃ śāpaṃ nadyovahanti |
4 Resolve for me, O singer, this my riddle: The rivers send their swelling water backward:
10.28.8
लोपाशः सिंहं परत्यञ्चमत्साः करोष्टावराहं निरतक्त कक्षात ||
lopāśaḥ siṃhaṃ pratyañcamatsāḥ kroṣṭāvarāhaṃ niratakta kakṣāt ||
The fox steals up to the approaching lion: the jackal drives the wild-boar from the brushwood.
10.28.9
कथ त एतदहमा चिकेतं गर्त्सस्य पाकस्तवसोमनीषाम |
katha ta etadahamā ciketaṃ ghṛtsasya pākastavasomanīṣām |
5 How shall I solve this riddle, I, the simple, declare the thought of thee the Wise and Mighty?
10.28.10
तवं नो विद्वान रतुथा वि वोचो यमर्धं तेमघवन कषेम्या धूः ||
tvaṃ no vidvān ṛtuthā vi voco yamardhaṃ temaghavan kṣemyā dhūḥ ||
Tell us, well knowing, as befits the season: Whitherward is thy prosperous car advancing?
10.28.11
एवा हि मां तवसं वर्धयन्ति दिवश्चिन मे बर्हतौत्तरा धुः |
evā hi māṃ tavasaṃ vardhayanti divaścin me bṛhatauttarā dhuḥ |
6 Thus do they magnify me, me the mighty higher than even high heaven is my car-pole.
10.28.12
पुरू सहस्रा नि शिशामि साकमशत्रुंहि म जनिता जजान ||
purū sahasrā ni śiśāmi sākamaśatruṃhi ma janitā jajāna ||
I all at once demolish many thousands: my Sire begot me with no foe to match me.
10.28.13
एवा हि मां तवसं जज्ञुरुग्रं कर्मन-कर्मन वर्षणमिन्द्र देवाः |
evā hi māṃ tavasaṃ jajñurughraṃ karman-karman vṛṣaṇamindra devāḥ |
7 Yea, and the Gods have known me also, Indra, as mighty, fierce and strong in every exploit.
10.28.14
वधीं वर्त्रं वज्रेण मन्दसनो.अप वरजम्महिना दाशुषे वम ||
vadhīṃ vṛtraṃ vajreṇa mandasano.apa vrajammahinā dāśuṣe vam ||
Exulting with the bolt I slaughtered Vṛtra, and for the offerer oped with might the cow-stall.
10.28.15
देवास आयन परशून्रबिभ्रन वना वर्श्चन्तो अभि विड्भिरायन |
devāsa āyan paraśūnrabibhran vanā vṛścanto abhi viḍbhirāyan |
8 The Deities approached, they carried axes; splitting the wood they came with their attendants.
10.28.16
नि सुद्र्वं दधतो वक्षणासु यत्रा कर्पीटमनुतद दहन्ति ||
ni sudrvaṃ dadhato vakṣaṇāsu yatrā kṛpīṭamanutad dahanti ||
They laid good timber in the fire-receivers, and burnt the grass up where they found it growing.
10.28.17
शशः कषुरं परत्यञ्चं जगाराद्रिं लोगेन वयभेदमारात |
śaśaḥ kṣuraṃ pratyañcaṃ jaghārādriṃ loghena vyabhedamārāt |
9 The hare hath swallowed up the opposing razor: I sundered with a clod the distant mountain.
10.28.18
बर्हन्तं चिद रहते रन्धयानि वयद वत्सो वर्षभंशूशुवानः ||
bṛhantaṃ cid ṛhate randhayāni vayad vatso vṛṣabhaṃśūśuvānaḥ ||
The great will I make subject to the little: the calf shall wax in strength and cat the bullock.
10.28.19
सुपर्ण इत्था नखमा सिषायावरुद्धः परिपदं नसिंहः |
suparṇa itthā nakhamā siṣāyāvaruddhaḥ paripadaṃ nasiṃhaḥ |
10 There hath the strong-winged eagle left his talon, as a snared lion leaves the trap that caught him.
10.28.20
निरुद्धश्चिन महिषस्तर्ष्यावान गोधा तस्मायथं कर्षदेतत ||
niruddhaścin mahiṣastarṣyāvān ghodhā tasmāayathaṃ karṣadetat ||
Even the wild steer in his thirst is captured: the leather strap still holds his foot entangled.
10.28.21
तेभ्यो गोधा अयथं कर्षदेतद ये बरह्मणः परतिपियन्त्यन्नैः |
tebhyo ghodhā ayathaṃ karṣadetad ye brahmaṇaḥ pratipiyantyannaiḥ |
11 So may the leather strap their foot entangle who fatten on the viands of the Brahman.
10.28.22
सिम उक्ष्णो.अवस्र्ष्टानदन्ति सवयं बलानितन्वः शर्णानाः ||
sima ukṣṇo.avasṛṣṭānadanti svayaṃ balānitanvaḥ śṛṇānāḥ ||
They all devour the bulls set free to wander, while they themselves destroy their bodies' vigour.
10.28.23
एते शमीभिः सुशमी अभूवन ये हिन्विरे तन्वः सोमौक्थैः |
ete śamībhiḥ suśamī abhūvan ye hinvire tanvaḥ somaukthaiḥ |
12 They were well occupied with holy duties who sped in person with their lauds to Soma.
10.28.24
नर्वद वदन्नुप नो माहि वाजान दिवि शरवोदधिषे नाम वीरः ||
nṛvad vadannupa no māhi vājān divi śravodadhiṣe nāma vīraḥ ||
Speaking like man, mete to us wealth and booty: in heaven thou hast the name and fame of Hero.
