10.45.1
दिवस परि परथमं जज्ञे अग्निरस्मद दवितीयं परिजातवेदाः |
divas pari prathamaṃ jajñe aghnirasmad dvitīyaṃ parijātavedāḥ |
1. FIRST Agni sprang to life from out of Heaven: the second time from us came Jātavedas.
10.45.2
तर्तीयमप्सु नर्मणा अजस्रमिन्धान एनंजरते सवाधीः ||
tṛtīyamapsu nṛmaṇā ajasramindhāna enaṃjarate svādhīḥ ||
Thirdly the Manly-souled was in the waters. The pious lauds and kindles him the Eternal.
10.45.3
विद्मा ते अग्ने तरेधा तरयाणि विद्मा ते धाम विभ्र्तापुरुत्रा |
vidmā te aghne tredhā trayāṇi vidmā te dhāma vibhṛtāpurutrā |
2 Agni, we know thy three powers in three stations, we know thy forms in many a place divided.
10.45.4
विद्मा ते नाम परमं गुहा यद विद्मा तमुत्सं यत आजगन्थ ||
vidmā te nāma paramaṃ ghuhā yad vidmā tamutsaṃ yata ājaghantha ||
We know what name supreme thou hast in secret: we know the source from which thou hast proceeded.
10.45.5
समुद्रे तवा नर्मणा अप्स्वन्तर्न्र्चक्षा ईधे दिवो अग्नूधन |
samudre tvā nṛmaṇā apsvantarnṛcakṣā īdhe divo aghnaūdhan |
3 The Manly-souled lit thee in sea and waters, man's Viewer lit thee in the breast of heaven,
10.45.6
तर्तीये तवा रजसि तस्थिवांसमपामुपस्थेमहिषा अवर्धन ||
tṛtīye tvā rajasi tasthivāṃsamapāmupasthemahiṣā avardhan ||
There as thou stoodest in the third high region the Steers increased thee in the water's bosom.
10.45.7
अक्रन्ददग्नि सतनयन्निव दयौः कषामा रेरिहद वीरुधःसमञ्जन |
akrandadaghni stanayanniva dyauḥ kṣāmā rerihad vīrudhaḥsamañjan |
4 Agni roared out, like Dyaus what time he thunders: he licked the ground about the plants he flickered.
10.45.8
सद्यो जज्ञानो वि हीमिद्धो अख्यदा रोदसीभानुना भात्यन्तः ||
sadyo jajñāno vi hīmiddho akhyadā rodasībhānunā bhātyantaḥ ||
At once, when born, he looked around enkindled, and lightened heaven and earth within with splendour.
10.45.9
शरीणामुदारो धरुणो रयीणां मनीषाणाम्प्रार्पणः सोमगोपाः |
śrīṇāmudāro dharuṇo rayīṇāṃ manīṣāṇāmprārpaṇaḥ somaghopāḥ |
5 The spring of glories and support of riches, rouser of thoughts and guardian of the Soma,
10.45.10
वसुः सूनुः सहसो अप्सु राजावि भात्यग्र उषसामिधानः ||
vasuḥ sūnuḥ sahaso apsu rājāvi bhātyaghra uṣasāmidhānaḥ ||
Good Son of Strength, a King amid the waters, in forefront of the Dawns he shines enkindled.
10.45.11
विश्वस्य केतुर्भुवनस्य गर्भ आ रोदसी अप्र्णाज्जायमानः |
viśvasya keturbhuvanasya gharbha ā rodasī apṛṇājjāyamānaḥ |
6 Germ of the world, ensign of all creation, be sprang to life and filled the earth and heavens.
10.45.12
वीळुं चिदद्रिमभिनत परायञ जना यदग्निमयजन्त पञ्च ||
vīḷuṃ cidadrimabhinat parāyañ janā yadaghnimayajanta pañca ||
Even the firm rock he cleft when passing over, when the Five Tribes brought sacrifice to Agni.
10.45.13
उशिक पावको अरतिः सुमेधा मर्तेष्वग्निरम्र्तो नि धायि |
uśik pāvako aratiḥ sumedhā marteṣvaghniramṛto ni dhāyi |
7 So among mortals was Immortal Agni stablished as holy wise and willing envoy.
10.45.14
इयर्ति धूममरुषं भरिभ्रदुच्छुक्रेण शोचिषाद्या इनक्षन ||
iyarti dhūmamaruṣaṃ bharibhraducchukreṇa śociṣādyā inakṣan ||
He waves the red smoke that he lifts above him, striving to reach the heavens with radiant lustre.
10.45.15
दर्शानो रुक्म उर्विया वयद्यौद दुर्मर्षमायुः शरियेरुचानः |
dṛśāno rukma urviyā vyadyaud durmarṣamāyuḥ śriyerucānaḥ |
8 Like gold to look on, far he shone refulgent, beaming imperishable life for glory,
10.45.16
अग्निरम्र्तो अभवद वयोभिर्यदेनं दयौर्जनयत सुरेताः ||
aghniramṛto abhavad vayobhiryadenaṃ dyaurjanayat suretāḥ ||
Agni by vital powers became immortal when his prolific Father Dyaus begat him.
10.45.17
यस्ते अद्य कर्णवद भद्रशोचे.अपूपं देव घर्तवन्तमग्ने |
yaste adya kṛṇavad bhadraśoce.apūpaṃ deva ghṛtavantamaghne |
9 Whoso this day, O God whose flames are lovely, prepares a cake, O Agni, mixt with butter,
10.45.18
पर तं नय परतरं वस्यो अछाभि सुम्नं देवभक्तंयविष्ठ ||
pra taṃ naya prataraṃ vasyo achābhi sumnaṃ devabhaktaṃyaviṣṭha ||
Lead thou and further him to higher fortune, to bliss bestowed by Gods, O thou Most Youthful.
10.45.19
आ तं भज सौश्रवसेष्वग्न उक्थौक्थ आ भज शस्यमाने |
ā taṃ bhaja sauśravaseṣvaghna ukthauktha ā bhaja śasyamāne |
10 Endow him, Agni, with a share of glory, at every song of praise sung forth enrich him.
10.45.20
परियः सूर्ये परियो अग्ना भवात्युज्जातेन भिनददुज्जनित्वैः ||
priyaḥ sūrye priyo aghnā bhavātyujjātena bhinadadujjanitvaiḥ ||
Dear let him be to Sūrya, dear to Agni, preeminent with son and children's children.
10.45.21
तवामग्ने यजमाना अनु दयून विश्वा वसु दधिरे वार्याणि |
tvāmaghne yajamānā anu dyūn viśvā vasu dadhire vāryāṇi |
11 While, Agni, day by day men pay thee worship they win themselves all treasures worth the wishing.
10.45.22
तवया सह दरविणमिछमाना वरजं गोमन्तमुशिजो विवव्रुः ||
tvayā saha draviṇamichamānā vrajaṃ ghomantamuśijo vivavruḥ ||
Allied with thee, eager and craving riches, they have disclosed the stable filled with cattle.
10.45.23
अस्ताव्यग्निर्नरां सुशेवो वैश्वानर रषिभिःसोमगोपाः |
astāvyaghnirnarāṃ suśevo vaiśvānara ṛṣibhiḥsomaghopāḥ |
12 Agni, the Friend of men, the Soma's keeper, Vaiśvānara, hath been lauded by the Ṛṣis.
10.45.24
अद्वेषे दयावाप्र्थिवी हुवेम देवा धत्त रयिमस्मे सुवीरम ||
adveṣe dyāvāpṛthivī huvema devā dhatta rayimasme suvīram ||
We will invoke benignant Earth and Heaven: ye Deities, give us wealth with hero children.
