2.38.1
उदु षय देवः सविता सवाय शश्वत्तमं तदपा वह्निरस्थात |
udu ṣya devaḥ savitā savāya śaśvattamaṃ tadapā vahnirasthāt |
1. UPRISEN is Savitar, this God, to quicken, Priest who neglects not this most constant duty.
2.38.2
नूनं देवेभ्यो वि हि धाति रत्नमथाभजद वीतिहोत्रं सवस्तौ ||
nūnaṃ devebhyo vi hi dhāti ratnamathābhajad vītihotraṃ svastau ||
To the Gods, verily, he gives rich treasure, and blesses him who calls them to the banquet.
2.38.3
विश्वस्य हि शरुष्टये देव ऊर्ध्वः पर बाहवा पर्थुपाणिः सिसर्ति |
viśvasya hi śruṣṭaye deva ūrdhvaḥ pra bāhavā pṛthupāṇiḥ sisarti |
2 Having gone up on high, the God broad-handed spreads his arms widely forth that all may mark him.
2.38.4
आपश्चिदस्य वरत आ निम्र्ग्रा अयं चिद वातो रमते परिज्मन ||
āpaścidasya vrata ā nimṛghrā ayaṃ cid vāto ramate parijman ||
Even the waters bend them to his service: even this wind rests in the circling region.
2.38.5
आशुभिश्चिद यान वि मुचाति नूनमरीरमदतमानं चिदेतोः |
āśubhiścid yān vi mucāti nūnamarīramadatamānaṃ cidetoḥ |
3 Though borne by swift steeds he will yet unyoke them: e’en the fleet chariot hath he stayed from going.
2.38.6
अह्यर्षूणां चिन नययानविष्यामनु वरतं सवितुर्मोक्यागात ||
ahyarṣūṇāṃ cin nyayānaviṣyāmanu vrataṃ saviturmokyāghāt ||
He hath checked e’en their haste who glide like serpents. Night closely followed Savitar's dominion.
2.38.7
पुनः समव्यद विततं वयन्ती मध्या कर्तोर्न्यधाच्छक्म धीरः |
punaḥ samavyad vitataṃ vayantī madhyā kartornyadhācchakma dhīraḥ |
4 What was spread out she weaves afresh, re-weaving: the skilful leaves his labour half-completed.
2.38.8
उत संहायास्थाद वय रतूं अदर्धररमतिःसविता देव आगात ||
ut saṃhāyāsthād vy ṛtūṃ adardhararamatiḥsavitā deva āghāt ||
He hath arisen from rest, and parted seasons: Savitar hath approached, God, holy-minded.
2.38.9
नानौकांसि दुर्यो विश्वमायुर्वि तिष्ठते परभवः शोको अग्नेः |
nānaukāṃsi duryo viśvamāyurvi tiṣṭhate prabhavaḥ śoko aghneḥ |
5 Through various dwellings, through entire existence, spreads, manifest, the household light of Agni.
2.38.10
जयेष्ठं माता सूनवे भागमाधादन्वस्यकेतमिषितं सवित्रा ||
jyeṣṭhaṃ mātā sūnave bhāghamādhādanvasyaketamiṣitaṃ savitrā ||
The Mother gives her Son the goodliest portion, and Savitar hath sped to meet his summons.
2.38.11
समाववर्ति विष्ठितो जिगीषुर्विश्वेषां कामश्चरताममाभूत |
samāvavarti viṣṭhito jighīṣurviśveṣāṃ kāmaścaratāmamābhūt |
6 He comes again, unfolded, fain for conquest: at home was he, the love of all things moving.
2.38.12
शश्वानपो विक्र्तं हित्व्यागादनु वरतं सवितुर्दैव्यस्य ||
śaśvānapo vikṛtaṃ hitvyāghādanu vrataṃ saviturdaivyasya ||
Each man hath come leaving his evil doings, after the Godlike Savitar's commandment.
2.38.13
तवया हितमप्यमप्सु भागं धन्वान्वा मर्गयसो वि तस्थुः |
tvayā hitamapyamapsu bhāghaṃ dhanvānvā mṛghayaso vi tasthuḥ |
7 The wild beasts spread through desert places seeking their watery share which thou hast set in waters.
2.38.14
वनानि विभ्यो नकिरस्य तानि वरता देवस्य सवितुर्मिनन्ति ||
vanāni vibhyo nakirasya tāni vratā devasya saviturminanti ||
The woods are given to the birds. These statutes of the God Savitar none disobeyeth.
2.38.15
याद्राध्यं वरुणो योनिमप्यमनिशितं निमिषि जर्भुराणः |
yādrādhyaṃ varuṇo yonimapyamaniśitaṃ nimiṣi jarbhurāṇaḥ |
8 With utmost speed, in restless haste at sunset Varuṇa seeks his watery habitation.
2.38.16
विश्वो मार्ताण्डो वरजमा पशुर्गात सथशो जन्मानि सविता वयाकः ||
viśvo mārtāṇḍo vrajamā paśurghāt sthaśo janmāni savitā vyākaḥ ||
Then seeks each bird his nest, each beast his lodging. In due place Savitar hath set each creature.
2.38.17
न यस्येन्द्रो वरुणो न मित्रो वरतमर्यमा न मिनन्ति रुद्रः |
na yasyendro varuṇo na mitro vratamaryamā na minanti rudraḥ |
9 Him whose high law not Varuṇa nor Indra, not Mitra, Aryaman, nor Rudra breaketh,
2.38.18
नारातयस्तमिदं सवस्ति हुवे देवं सवितारं नमोभिः ||
nārātayastamidaṃ svasti huve devaṃ savitāraṃ namobhiḥ ||
Nor evil-hearted fiends, here for my welfare him I invoke, God Savitar, with worship.
2.38.19
भगं धियं वाजयन्तः पुरन्धिं नराशंसो गनास्पतिर्नो अव्याः |
bhaghaṃ dhiyaṃ vājayantaḥ purandhiṃ narāśaṃso ghnāspatirno avyāḥ |
10 May they who strengthen bliss, and thought and wisdom, and the Dames’ Lord and Narāśaṁsa aid us.
2.38.20
आये वामस्य संगथे रयीणां परिया देवस्य सवितुः सयाम ||
āye vāmasya saṃghathe rayīṇāṃ priyā devasya savituḥ syāma ||
That good may come to us and wealth be gathered, may we be Savitar the God's beloved.
2.38.21
अस्मभ्यं तद दिवो अद्भ्यः पर्थिव्यास्त्वया दत्तं काम्यं राध आ गात |
asmabhyaṃ tad divo adbhyaḥ pṛthivyāstvayā dattaṃ kāmyaṃ rādha ā ghāt |
11 So come to us our hearts' desire, the bounty bestowed by thee, from heaven and earth and waters,
2.38.22
शं यत सतोत्र्भ्य आपये भवात्युरुशंसाय सवितर्जरित्रे ||
śaṃ yat stotṛbhya āpaye bhavātyuruśaṃsāya savitarjaritre ||
That it be well with friends and those who praise thee, and, Savitar, with the loud-lauding singer.
