3.33.1
पर पर्वतानामुशती उपस्थादश्वे इव विषिते हासमाने |
pra parvatānāmuśatī upasthādaśve iva viṣite hāsamāne |
1. FORTH from the bosom of the mountains, eager as two swift mares with loosened rein contending,

गावेव शुभ्रे मातरा रिहाणे विपाट छुतुद्री पयसाजवेते ||
ghāveva śubhre mātarā rihāṇe vipāṭ chutudrī payasājavete ||
Like two bright mother cows who lick their youngling, Vipāś and Sutudri speed down their waters.
3.33.3
इन्द्रेषिते परसवं भिक्षमाणे अछा समुद्रं रथ्येव याथः |
indreṣite prasavaṃ bhikṣamāṇe achā samudraṃ rathyeva yāthaḥ |
2 Impelled by Indra whom ye pray to urge you, ye move as ’twere on chariots to the ocean.
3.33.4
समाराणे ऊर्मिभिः पिन्वमाने अन्या वामन्यामप्येति शुभ्रे ||
samārāṇe ūrmibhiḥ pinvamāne anyā vāmanyāmapyeti śubhre ||
Flowing together, swelling with your billows, O lucid Streams, each of you seeks the other.
3.33.5
अछा सिन्धुं मात्र्तमामयासं विपाशमुर्वीं सुभगामगन्म |
achā sindhuṃ mātṛtamāmayāsaṃ vipāśamurvīṃ subhaghāmaghanma |
3 I have attained the most maternal River, we have approached Vipāś, the broad, the blessed.
3.33.6
वत्समिव मातरा संरिहाणे समानं योनिमनु संचरन्ती ||
vatsamiva mātarā saṃrihāṇe samānaṃ yonimanu saṃcarantī ||
Licking as ’twere their calf the pair of Mothers flow onward to their common home together.
3.33.7
एन वयं पयसा पिन्वमाना अनु योनिं देवक्र्तं चरन्तीः |
ena vayaṃ payasā pinvamānā anu yoniṃ devakṛtaṃ carantīḥ |
4 We two who rise and swell with billowy waters move forward to the home which Gods have made us.
3.33.8
न वर्तवे परसवः सर्गतक्तः किंयुर्विप्रो नद्यो जोहवीति ||
na vartave prasavaḥ sarghataktaḥ kiṃyurvipro nadyo johavīti ||
Our flood may not be stayed when urged to motion. What would the singer, calling to the Rivers?
3.33.9
रमध्वं मे वचसे सोम्याय रतावरीरुप मुहूर्तमेवैः |
ramadhvaṃ me vacase somyāya ṛtāvarīrupa muhūrtamevaiḥ |
5 Linger a little at my friendly bidding rest, Holy Ones, a moment in your journey.
3.33.10
पर सिन्धुमछा बर्हती मनीषावस्युरह्वे कुशिकस्य सूनुः ||
pra sindhumachā bṛhatī manīṣāvasyurahve kuśikasya sūnuḥ ||
With hymn sublime soliciting your favour Kuśika's son hath called unto the River.
3.33.11
इन्द्रो अस्मानरदद वज्रबाहुरपाहन वर्त्रं परिधिं नदीनाम |
indro asmānaradad vajrabāhurapāhan vṛtraṃ paridhiṃ nadīnām |
6 Indra who wields the thunder dug our channels: he smote down Vṛtra, him who stayed our currents.
3.33.12
देवो.अनयत सवित सुपाणिस्तस्य वयं परसवे याम उर्वीः ||
devo.anayat savita supāṇistasya vayaṃ prasave yāma urvīḥ ||
Savitar, God, the lovely-handed, led us, and at his sending forth we flow expanded.
3.33.13
परवाच्यं शश्वधा वीर्यं तदिन्द्रस्य कर्म यदहिंविव्र्श्चत |
pravācyaṃ śaśvadhā vīryaṃ tadindrasya karma yadahiṃvivṛścat |
7 That hero deed of Indra must be lauded for ever that he rent Ahi in pieces.
3.33.14
वि वज्रेण परिषदो जघानायन्नापो.अयनमिछमानाः ||
vi vajreṇa pariṣado jaghānāyannāpo.ayanamichamānāḥ ||
He smote away the obstructors with his thunder, and eager for their course forth flowed the waters.
3.33.15
एतद वचो जरितर्मापि मर्ष्ठा आ यत ते घोषानुत्तरा युगानि |
etad vaco jaritarmāpi mṛṣṭhā ā yat te ghoṣānuttarā yughāni |
8 Never forget this word of thine, O singer, which future generations shall reecho.
3.33.16
उक्थेषु कारो परति नो जुषस्व मा नो नि कः पुरुषत्रा नमस्ते ||
uktheṣu kāro prati no juṣasva mā no ni kaḥ puruṣatrā namaste ||
In hymns, O bard, show us thy loving kindness. Humble us not mid men. To thee be honour!
3.33.17
ओ षु सवसारः कारवे शर्णोत ययौ वो दूरादनसा रथेन |
o ṣu svasāraḥ kārave śṛṇota yayau vo dūrādanasā rathena |
9 List quickly, Sisters, to the bard who cometh to you from far away with car and wagon.
3.33.18
नि षू नमध्वं भवता सुपारा अधोक्षाः सिन्धवःस्रोत्याभिः ||
ni ṣū namadhvaṃ bhavatā supārā adhoakṣāḥ sindhavaḥsrotyābhiḥ ||
Bow lowly down; be easy to be traversed stay, Rivers, with your floods below our axles.
3.33.19
आ ते कारो शर्णवामा वचांसि ययाथ दूरादनसा रथेन |
ā te kāro śṛṇavāmā vacāṃsi yayātha dūrādanasā rathena |
10 Yea, we will listen to thy words, O singer. With wain and car from far away thou comest.
3.33.20
नि ते नंसै पीप्यानेव योषा मर्यायेव कन्या शश्वचै ते ||
ni te naṃsai pīpyāneva yoṣā maryāyeva kanyā śaśvacai te ||
Low, like a nursing mother, will I bend me, and yield me as a maiden to her lover.
3.33.21
यदङग तवा भरताः सन्तरेयुर्गव्यन गराम इषित इन्द्रजूतः |
yadaṅgha tvā bharatāḥ santareyurghavyan ghrāma iṣita indrajūtaḥ |
11 Soon as the Bharatas have fared across thee, the warrior band, urged on and sped by Indra,
3.33.22
अर्षादह परसवः सर्गतक्त आ वो वर्णे सुमतिं यज्ञियानाम ||
arṣādaha prasavaḥ sarghatakta ā vo vṛṇe sumatiṃ yajñiyānām ||
Then let your streams flow on in rapid motion. I crave your favour who deserve our worship.
3.33.23
अतारिषुर्भरता गव्यवः समभक्त विप्रः सुमतिं नदीनाम |
atāriṣurbharatā ghavyavaḥ samabhakta vipraḥ sumatiṃ nadīnām |
12 The warrior host, the Bharatas, fared over the singer won the favour of the Rivers.
3.33.24
पर पिन्वध्वमिषयन्तीः सुराधा आ वक्षणाः पर्णध्वं यात शीभम ||
pra pinvadhvamiṣayantīḥ surādhā ā vakṣaṇāḥ pṛṇadhvaṃ yāta śībham ||
Swell with your billows, hasting, pouring riches. Fill full your channels, and roll swiftly onward.
3.33.25
उद व ऊर्मिः शम्या हन्त्वापो योक्त्राणि मुञ्चत |
ud va ūrmiḥ śamyā hantvāpo yoktrāṇi muñcata |
13 So let your wave bear up the pins, and ye, O Waters, spare the thongs;
3.33.26
मादुष्क्र्तौ वयेनसाघ्न्यौ शूनमारताम ||
māduṣkṛtau vyenasāghnyau śūnamāratām ||
And never may the pair of Bulls, harmless and sinless, waste away.
