3.53.1
इन्द्रापर्वता बर्हता रथेन वामीरिष आ वहतं सुवीराः |
indrāparvatā bṛhatā rathena vāmīriṣa ā vahataṃ suvīrāḥ |
1. ON a high car, O Parvata and Indra, bring pleasant viands, with brave heroes, hither.
3.53.2
वीतं हव्यान्यध्वरेषु देवा वर्धेथां गीर्भीरिळया मदन्ता ||
vītaṃ havyānyadhvareṣu devā vardhethāṃ ghīrbhīriḷayā madantā ||
Enjoy the gifts, Gods, at our sacrifices wax strong by hymns, rejoice in our oblation.
3.53.3
तिष्ठा सु कं मघवन मा परा गाः सोमस्य नु तवा सुषुतस्य यक्षि |
tiṣṭhā su kaṃ maghavan mā parā ghāḥ somasya nu tvā suṣutasya yakṣi |
2 Stay still, O Maghavan, advance no farther. a draught of well-pressed Soma will I give thee.
3.53.4
पितुर्न पुत्रः सिचमा रभे त इन्द्र सवादिष्ठया गिरा शचीवः ||
piturna putraḥ sicamā rabhe ta indra svādiṣṭhayā ghirā śacīvaḥ ||
With sweetest song I grasp, O Mighty Indra, thy garment's hem as a child grasps his father's.
3.53.5
शंसावाध्वर्यो परति मे गर्णीहीन्द्राय वाहः कर्णवाव जुष्टम |
śaṃsāvādhvaryo prati me ghṛṇīhīndrāya vāhaḥ kṛṇavāva juṣṭam |
3 Adhvaryu, sing we both; sing thou in answer: make we a laud acceptable to Indra.
3.53.6
एदं बर्हिर्यजमानस्य सीदाथा च भूदुक्थमिन्द्राय शस्तम ||
edaṃ barhiryajamānasya sīdāthā ca bhūdukthamindrāya śastam ||
Upon this sacrificer's grass he seated: to Indra shall our eulogy be uttered.
3.53.7
जायेदस्तं मघवन सेदु योनिस्तदित तवा युक्ता हरयो वहन्तु |
jāyedastaṃ maghavan sedu yonistadit tvā yuktā harayo vahantu |
4 A wife, O Maghavan is home and dwelling: so let thy Bay Steeds yoked convey thee hither.
3.53.8
यदा कदा च सुनवाम सोममग्निष टवा दूतो धन्वात्यछ ||
yadā kadā ca sunavāma somamaghniṣ ṭvā dūto dhanvātyacha ||
Whenever we press out for thee the Soma, let Agni as our Herald speed to call thee.
3.53.9
परा याहि मघवन्ना च याहीन्द्र भरातरुभयत्रा ते अर्थम |
parā yāhi maghavannā ca yāhīndra bhrātarubhayatrā te artham |
5 Depart, O Maghavan;again come hither: both there and here thy goat is Indra, Brother,
3.53.10
यत्रा रथस्य बर्हतो निधानं विमोचनं वाजिनो रासभस्य ||
yatrā rathasya bṛhato nidhānaṃ vimocanaṃ vājino rāsabhasya ||
Where thy tall chariot hath a place to rest in, and where thqu loosest thy loud-neighing Courser.
3.53.11
अपाः सोममस्तमिन्द्र पर याहि कल्याणीर्जया सुरणंग्र्हे ते |
apāḥ somamastamindra pra yāhi kalyāṇīrjayā suraṇaṃghṛhe te |
6 Thou hast drunk Soma, Indra, turn thee homeward; thy joy is in thy home, thy racious Consort;
3.53.12
यत्रा रथस्य बर्हतो निधानं विमोचनं वाजिनोदक्षिणावत ||
yatrā rathasya bṛhato nidhānaṃ vimocanaṃ vājinodakṣiṇāvat ||
Where thy tall chariot hath a place to rest in, and thy strong Courser is set free with guerdon.
3.53.13
इमे भोजा अङगिरसो विरूपा दिवस पुत्रासो असुरस्य वीराः |
ime bhojā aṅghiraso virūpā divas putrāso asurasya vīrāḥ |
7 Bounteous are these, Aṅgirases, Virupas: the Asura's Heroes and the Sons of Heaven.
3.53.14
विश्वामित्राय ददतो मघानि सहस्रसावे पर तिरन्त आयुः ||
viśvāmitrāya dadato maghāni sahasrasāve pra tiranta āyuḥ ||
They, giving store of wealth to Viśvāmitra, prolong his life through countless Soma-pressings.
3.53.15
रूपं-रूपं मघवा बोभवीति मायाः कर्ण्वानस्तन्वं परि सवाम |
rūpaṃ-rūpaṃ maghavā bobhavīti māyāḥ kṛṇvānastanvaṃ pari svām |
8 Maghavan weareth every shape at pleasure, effecting magic changes in his body,
3.53.16
तरिर्यद दिवः परि मुहूर्तमागात सवैर्मन्त्रैरन्र्तुपा रतावा ||
triryad divaḥ pari muhūrtamāghāt svairmantrairanṛtupā ṛtāvā ||
Holy One, drinker out of season, coming thrice, in a moment, through fit prayers, from heaven.
3.53.17
महान रषिर्देवजा देवजूतो.अस्तभ्नात सिन्धुमर्णवं नर्चक्षाः |
mahān ṛṣirdevajā devajūto.astabhnāt sindhumarṇavaṃ nṛcakṣāḥ |
9 The mighty sage, God-born and God-incited, who looks on men, restrained the billowy river.
3.53.18
विश्वामित्रो यदवहत सुदासमप्रियायत कुशिकेभिरिन्द्रः ||
viśvāmitro yadavahat sudāsamapriyāyata kuśikebhirindraḥ ||
When Viśvāmitra was Sudās's escort, then Indra through the Kuśikas grew friendly.
3.53.19
हंसा इव कर्णुथ शलोकमद्रिभिर्मदन्तो गीर्भिरध्वरे सुते सचा |
haṃsā iva kṛṇutha ślokamadribhirmadanto ghīrbhiradhvare sute sacā |
10 Like swans, prepare a song of praise with pressing-stones, glad in your hymns with juice poured forth in sacrifice.
3.53.20
देवेभिर्विप्रा रषयो नर्चक्षसो वि पिबध्वं कुशिकाः सोम्यं मधु ||
devebhirviprā ṛṣayo nṛcakṣaso vi pibadhvaṃ kuśikāḥ somyaṃ madhu ||
Ye singers, with the Gods, sages who look on men, ye Kutikas drink up the Soma's savoury meath.
3.53.21
उप परेत कुशिकाश्चेतयध्वमश्वं राये पर मुञ्चता सुदासः |
upa preta kuśikāścetayadhvamaśvaṃ rāye pra muñcatā sudāsaḥ |
11 Come forward, Kuśikas, and be attentive; let loose Sudās's horse to win him riches.
3.53.22
राजा वर्त्रं जङघनत परागपागुदगथा यजाते वर आ पर्थिव्याः ||
rājā vṛtraṃ jaṅghanat prāghapāghudaghathā yajāte vara ā pṛthivyāḥ ||
East, west, and north, let the King slay the foeman, then at earth's choicest place perform his worship.
3.53.23
य इमे रोदसी उभे अहमिन्द्रमतुष्टवम |
ya ime rodasī ubhe ahamindramatuṣṭavam |
12 Praises to Indra have I sung, sustainer of this earth and heaven. This prayer of Viśvāmitra keeps secure the race of Bharatas.
3.53.24
विश्वामित्रस्यरक्षति बरह्मेदं भारतं जनम ||
viśvāmitrasyarakṣati brahmedaṃ bhārataṃ janam ||
13 The Viśvāmitras have sung forth this prayer to Indra Thunder-aimed:
3.53.25
विश्वामित्रा अरासत बरह्मेन्द्राय वज्रिणे |
viśvāmitrā arāsata brahmendrāya vajriṇe |
So let him make us prosperous.
3.53.26
करदिन नः सुराधसः ||
karadin naḥ surādhasaḥ ||
14 Among the Kikatas what do thy cattle? They pour no milky draught, they heat no caldron.
3.53.27
किं ते कर्ण्वन्ति कीकटेषु गावो नाशिरं दुह्रे न तपन्तिघर्मम |
kiṃ te kṛṇvanti kīkaṭeṣu ghāvo nāśiraṃ duhre na tapantigharmam |
Bring thou to us the wealth of Pramaganda;give up to us, O Maghavan, the low-born.
3.53.28
आ नो भर परमगन्दस्य वेदो नैचाशाखं मघवन्रन्धया नः ||
ā no bhara pramaghandasya vedo naicāśākhaṃ maghavanrandhayā naḥ ||
15 Sasarpari, the gift of Jamadagnis, hath lowed with mighty voice dispelling famine.
3.53.29
ससर्परीरमतिं बाधमाना बर्हन मिमाय जमदग्निदत्ता |
sasarparīramatiṃ bādhamānā bṛhan mimāya jamadaghnidattā |
The Daughter of the Sun hath spread our glory among the Gods, imperishable, deathless.
3.53.30
आ सूर्यस्य दुहिता ततान शरवो देवेष्वम्र्तमजुर्यम ||
ā sūryasya duhitā tatāna śravo deveṣvamṛtamajuryam ||
16 Sasarpari brought glory speedily to these, over the generations of the Fivefold Race;
3.53.31
ससर्परीरभरत तूयमेभ्यो.अधि शरवः पाञ्चजन्यासु कर्ष्टिषु |
sasarparīrabharat tūyamebhyo.adhi śravaḥ pāñcajanyāsu kṛṣṭiṣu |
Daughter of Paksa, she bestows new vital power, she whom the ancient Jamadagnis gave to me.
3.53.32
सा पक्ष्या नव्यमायुर्दधाना यां मे पलस्तिजमदग्नयो ददुः ||
sā pakṣyā navyamāyurdadhānā yāṃ me palastijamadaghnayo daduḥ ||
17 Strong be the pair of oxen, firm the axles, let not the pole slip nor the yoke be broken.
3.53.33
सथिरौ गावौ भवतां वीळुरक्षो मेषा वि वर्हि मा युगं वि शारि |
sthirau ghāvau bhavatāṃ vīḷurakṣo meṣā vi varhi mā yughaṃ vi śāri |
May Indra, keep the yoke-pins from decaying: attend us, thou whose fellies are uninjured.
3.53.34
इन्द्रः पातल्ये ददतां शरीतोररिष्टनेमे अभि नः सचस्व ||
indraḥ pātalye dadatāṃ śarītorariṣṭaneme abhi naḥ sacasva ||
18 O Indra, give our bodies strength, strength to the bulls who draw the wains,
3.53.35
बलं धेहि तनूषु नो बलमिन्द्रानळुत्सु नः |
balaṃ dhehi tanūṣu no balamindrānaḷutsu naḥ |
Strength to our seed and progeny that they may live, for thou art he who giveth strength.
3.53.36
बलं तोकाय तनयाय जीवसे तवं हि बलदा असि ||
balaṃ tokāya tanayāya jīvase tvaṃ hi baladā asi ||
19 Enclose thee in the heart of Khayar timber, in the car wrought of Sinsapa put firmness.
3.53.37
अभि वययस्व खदिरस्य सारमोजो धेहि सपन्दने शिंशपायाम |
abhi vyayasva khadirasya sāramojo dhehi spandane śiṃśapāyām |
Show thyself strong, O Axle, fixed and strengthened: throw us not from the car whereon we travel.
3.53.38
अक्ष वीळो वीळित वीळयस्व मा यामादस्मादव जीहिपो नः ||
akṣa vīḷo vīḷita vīḷayasva mā yāmādasmādava jīhipo naḥ ||
20 Let not this sovran of the wood leave us forlorn or injure us.
3.53.39
अयमस्मान वनस्पतिर्मा च हा मा च रीरिषत |
ayamasmān vanaspatirmā ca hā mā ca rīriṣat |
Safe may we be until we reach our homes and rest us and unyoke.
3.53.40
सवस्त्याग्र्हेभ्य आवसा आ विमोचनात ||
svastyāghṛhebhya āvasā ā vimocanāt ||
21 With various aids this day come to us, Indra, with best aids speed us, Maghavan, thou Hero.
3.53.41
इन्द्रोतिभिर्बहुलाभिर्नो अद्य याच्छ्रेष्ठाभिर्मघवञ्छूर जिन्व |
indrotibhirbahulābhirno adya yācchreṣṭhābhirmaghavañchūra jinva |
Let him who hatcth us fall headlong downward: him whom we hate let vital breath abandon.
3.53.42
यो नो दवेष्ट्यधरः सस पदीष्ट यमु दविष्मस्तमु पराणो जहातु ||
yo no dveṣṭyadharaḥ sas padīṣṭa yamu dviṣmastamu prāṇo jahātu ||
22 He heats his very axe, and then cuts a mere Semal blossom off.
3.53.43
परशुं चिद वि तपति शिम्बलं चिद वि वर्श्चति |
paraśuṃ cid vi tapati śimbalaṃ cid vi vṛścati |
O Indra, like a caldron cracked and seething, so he pours out foam.
3.53.44
उखा चिदिन्द्र येषन्ती परयस्ता फेनमस्यति ||
ukhā cidindra yeṣantī prayastā phenamasyati ||
23 Men notice not the arrow, O ye people; they bring the red beast deeming it a bullock.
3.53.45
न सायकस्य चिकिते जनासो लोधं नयन्ति पशु मन्यमानाः |
na sāyakasya cikite janāso lodhaṃ nayanti paśu manyamānāḥ |
A sluggish steed men run not with the courser, nor ever lead an ass before a charger.
3.53.46
नावाजिनं वाजिना हासयन्ति न गर्दभं पुरो अश्वान नयन्ति ||
nāvājinaṃ vājinā hāsayanti na ghardabhaṃ puro aśvān nayanti ||
24 These men, the sons of Bhārata, O Indra, regard not severance or close connexion.
3.53.47
इम इन्द्र भरतस्य पुत्रा अपपित्वं चिकितुर्न परपित्वम |
ima indra bharatasya putrā apapitvaṃ cikiturna prapitvam |
They urge their own steed as it were another's, and take him, swift as the bow's string, to battle.
