4.24.1
का सुष्टुतिः शवसः सूनुम इन्द्रम अर्वाचीनं राधस आ ववर्तत |
kā suṣṭutiḥ śavasaḥ sūnum indram arvācīnaṃ rādhasa ā vavartat |
1. WHAT worthy praise will bring before us Indra, the Son of Strength, that he may grant us riches;
4.24.2
ददिर हि वीरो गर्णते वसूनि स गोपतिर निष्षिधां नो जनासः ||
dadir hi vīro ghṛṇate vasūni sa ghopatir niṣṣidhāṃ no janāsaḥ ||
For he the Hero, gives the singer treasures: he is the Lord who sends us gifts, ye people.
4.24.3
स वर्त्रहत्ये हव्यः स ईड्यः स सुष्टुत इन्द्रः सत्यराधाः |
sa vṛtrahatye havyaḥ sa īḍyaḥ sa suṣṭuta indraḥ satyarādhāḥ |
2 To be invoked and hymned in fight with Vtra, that well-praised Indra gives us real bounties.
4.24.4
स यामन्न आ मघवा मर्त्याय बरह्मण्यते सुष्वये वरिवो धात ||
sa yāmann ā maghavā martyāya brahmaṇyate suṣvaye varivo dhāt ||
That Maghavan brings comfort in the foray to the religious man who pours libations.
4.24.5
तम इन नरो वि हवयन्ते समीके रिरिक्वांसस तन्वः कर्ण्वत तराम |
tam in naro vi hvayante samīke ririkvāṃsas tanvaḥ kṛṇvata trām |
3 Him, verily, the men invoke in combat; risking their lives they make him their protector,
4.24.6
मिथो यत तयागम उभयासो अग्मन नरस तोकस्य तनयस्य सातौ ||
mitho yat tyāgham ubhayāso aghman naras tokasya tanayasya sātau ||
When heroes, foe to foe, give up their bodies, fighting, each side, for children and their offspring.
4.24.7
करतूयन्ति कषितयो योग उग्राशुषाणासो मिथो अर्णसातौ |
kratūyanti kṣitayo yogha ughrāśuṣāṇāso mitho arṇasātau |
4 Strong God! the folk at need put forth their vigour, striving together in the whirl of battle.
4.24.8
सं यद विशो ऽवव्र्त्रन्त युध्मा आद इन नेम इन्द्रयन्ते अभीके ||
saṃ yad viśo 'vavṛtranta yudhmā ād in nema indrayante abhīke ||
When warrior bands encounter one another some in the grapple quit themselves like Indra.
4.24.9
आद इद ध नेम इन्द्रियं यजन्त आद इत पक्तिः पुरोळाशं रिरिच्यात |
ād id dha nema indriyaṃ yajanta ād it paktiḥ puroḷāśaṃ riricyāt |
5 Hence many a one worships the might of Indra: hence let the brew succeed the meal-oblation.
4.24.10
आद इत सोमो वि पप्र्च्याद असुष्वीन आद इज जुजोष वर्षभं यजध्यै ||
ād it somo vi papṛcyād asuṣvīn ād ij jujoṣa vṛṣabhaṃ yajadhyai ||
Hence let the Soma banish those who pour not: even hence I joy to pay the Strong One worship.
4.24.11
कर्णोत्य अस्मै वरिवो य इत्थेन्द्राय सोमम उशते सुनोति |
kṛṇoty asmai varivo ya itthendrāya somam uśate sunoti |
6 Indra gives comfort to the man who truly presses, for him who longs
4.24.12
सध्रीचीनेन मनसाविवेनन तम इत सखायं कर्णुते समत्सु ||
sadhrīcīnena manasāvivenan tam it sakhāyaṃ kṛṇute samatsu ||

य इन्द्राय सुनवत सोमम अद्य पचात पक्तीर उत भर्ज्जाति धानाः |
ya indrāya sunavat somam adya pacāt paktīr uta bhṛjjāti dhānāḥ |

4.24.14
परति मनायोर उचथानि हर्यन तस्मिन दधद वर्षणं शुष्मम इन्द्रः ||
prati manāyor ucathāni haryan tasmin dadhad vṛṣaṇaṃ śuṣmam indraḥ ||
Not disaffected, with devoted spirit this man he takes to be his friend in battles.
4.24.15
यदा समर्यं वय अचेद रघावा दीर्घं यद आजिम अभ्य अख्यद अर्यः |
yadā samaryaṃ vy aced ṛghāvā dīrghaṃ yad ājim abhy akhyad aryaḥ |
7 He who this day for Indra presses Soma, prepares the brew and fries the grains of barley
4.24.16
अचिक्रदद वर्षणम पत्न्य अछा दुरोण आ निशितं सोमसुद्भिः ||
acikradad vṛṣaṇam patny achā duroṇa ā niśitaṃ somasudbhiḥ ||
Loving the hymns of that devoted servant, to him may Indra give heroic vigour.
4.24.17
भूयसा वस्नम अचरत कनीयो ऽविक्रीतो अकानिषम पुनर यन |
bhūyasā vasnam acarat kanīyo 'vikrīto akāniṣam punar yan |
8 When the impetuous chief hath sought the

स भूयसा कनीयो नारिरेचीद दीना दक्षा वि दुहन्ति पर वाणम ||
sa bhūyasā kanīyo nārirecīd dīnā dakṣā vi duhanti pra vāṇam ||

क इमं दशभिर ममेन्द्रं करीणाति धेनुभिः |
ka imaṃ daśabhir mamendraṃ krīṇāti dhenubhiḥ |

यदा वर्त्राणि जङघनद अथैनम मे पुनर ददत ||
yadā vṛtrāṇi jaṅghanad athainam me punar dadat ||
The matron calls to the Strong God whom pressers of Soma have encouraged in the dwelling.
4.24.21
नू षटुत इन्द्र नू गर्णान इषं जरित्रे नद्यो न पीपेः |
nū ṣṭuta indra nū ghṛṇāna iṣaṃ jaritre nadyo na pīpeḥ |
9 He bid a small price for a thing of value: I was content, returning, still unpurchased.
4.24.22
अकारि ते हरिवो बरह्म नव्यं धिया सयाम रथ्यः सदासाः ||
akāri te harivo brahma navyaṃ dhiyā syāma rathyaḥ sadāsāḥ ||
He heightened not his insufficient offer. Simple and clever, both milk out the udder.
