4.50.1
यस तस्तम्भ सहसा वि जमो अन्तान बर्हस्पतिस तरिषधस्थो रवेण |
yas tastambha sahasā vi jmo antān bṛhaspatis triṣadhastho raveṇa |
1. Him who with might hath propped earth's ends, who sitteth in threefold seat, Bṛhaspati, with thunder,
4.50.2
तम परत्नास रषयो दीध्यानाः पुरो विप्रा दधिरे मन्द्रजिह्वम ||
tam pratnāsa ṛṣayo dīdhyānāḥ puro viprā dadhire mandrajihvam ||
Him of the pleasant tongue have ancient sages, deep-thinking, holy singers, set before them.
4.50.3
धुनेतयः सुप्रकेतम मदन्तो बर्हस्पते अभि ये नस ततस्रे |
dhunetayaḥ supraketam madanto bṛhaspate abhi ye nas tatasre |
2 Wild in their course, in well-marked wise rejoicing were they, Bṛhaspati, who pressed around us.
4.50.4
पर्षन्तं सर्प्रम अदब्धम ऊर्वम बर्हस्पते रक्षताद अस्य योनिम ||
pṛṣantaṃ sṛpram adabdham ūrvam bṛhaspate rakṣatād asya yonim ||
Preserve Bṛhaspati, the stall uninjured, this company's raining, ever-moving birthplace.
4.50.5
बर्हस्पते या परमा परावद अत आ त रतस्प्र्शो नि षेदुः |
bṛhaspate yā paramā parāvad ata ā ta ṛtaspṛśo ni ṣeduḥ |
3 Bṛhaspati, from thy remotest distance have they sat down who love the law eternal.
4.50.6
तुभ्यं खाता अवता अद्रिदुग्धा मध्व शचोतन्त्य अभितो विरप्शम ||
tubhyaṃ khātā avatā adridughdhā madhva ścotanty abhito virapśam ||
For thee were dug wells springing from the mountain, which murmuring round about pour streams of sweetness.
4.50.7
बर्हस्पतिः परथमं जायमानो महो जयोतिषः परमे वयोमन |
bṛhaspatiḥ prathamaṃ jāyamāno maho jyotiṣaḥ parame vyoman |
4 Bṛhaspati, when first he had his being from mighty splendour in supremest heaven,
4.50.8
सप्तास्यस तुविजातो रवेण वि सप्तरश्मिर अधमत तमांसि ||
saptāsyas tuvijāto raveṇa vi saptaraśmir adhamat tamāṃsi ||
Strong, with his sevenfold mouth, with noise of thunder, with his seven rays, blew and dispersed the darkness.
4.50.9
स सुष्टुभा स रक्वता गणेन वलं रुरोज फलिगं रवेण |
sa suṣṭubhā sa ṛkvatā ghaṇena valaṃ ruroja phalighaṃ raveṇa |
5 With the loud-shouting band who sang his praises, with thunder, he destroyed obstructive Vala.
4.50.10
बर्हस्पतिर उस्रिया हव्यसूदः कनिक्रदद वावशतीर उद आजत ||
bṛhaspatir usriyā havyasūdaḥ kanikradad vāvaśatīr ud ājat ||
Bṛhaspati thundering drave forth the cattle, the lowing cows who make oblations ready.
4.50.11
एवा पित्रे विश्वदेवाय वर्ष्णे यज्ञैर विधेम नमसा हविर्भिः |
evā pitre viśvadevāya vṛṣṇe yajñair vidhema namasā havirbhiḥ |
6 Serve we with sacrifices, gifts, and homage even thus the Steer of all the Gods, the Father.
4.50.12
बर्हस्पते सुप्रजा वीरवन्तो वयं सयाम पतयो रयीणाम ||
bṛhaspate suprajā vīravanto vayaṃ syāma patayo rayīṇām ||
Bṛhaspati, may we be lords of riches, with noble progeny and store of heroes.
4.50.13
स इद राजा परतिजन्यानि विश्वा शुष्मेण तस्थाव अभि वीर्य्ण |
sa id rājā pratijanyāni viśvā śuṣmeṇa tasthāv abhi vīryṇa |
7 Surely that King by power and might heroic hath made him lord of all his foes' posses-ions,
4.50.14
बर्हस्पतिं यः सुभ्र्तम बिभर्ति वल्गूयति वन्दते पूर्वभाजम ||
bṛhaspatiṃ yaḥ subhṛtam bibharti valghūyati vandate pūrvabhājam ||
Who cherishes Bṛhaspati well-tended, adorns and worships him as foremost sharer.
4.50.15
स इत कषेति सुधित ओकसि सवे तस्मा इळा पिन्वते विश्वदानीम |
sa it kṣeti sudhita okasi sve tasmā iḷā pinvate viśvadānīm |
8 In his own house he dwells in peace and comfort: to him for ever holy food flows richly.
4.50.16
तस्मै विशः सवयम एवा नमन्ते यस्मिन बरह्मा राजनि पूर्व एति ||
tasmai viśaḥ svayam evā namante yasmin brahmā rājani pūrva eti ||
To him the people with free will pay homage-the King with whom the Brahman hath precedence.
4.50.17
अप्रतीतो जयति सं धनानि परतिजन्यान्य उत या सजन्या |
apratīto jayati saṃ dhanāni pratijanyāny uta yā sajanyā |
9 He, unopposed, is master of the riches of his own subjects and of hostile people.
4.50.18
अवस्यवे यो वरिवः कर्णोति बरह्मणे राजा तम अवन्ति देवाः ||
avasyave yo varivaḥ kṛṇoti brahmaṇe rājā tam avanti devāḥ ||
The Gods uphold that King with their protection who helps the Brahman when he seeks his favour.
4.50.19
इन्द्रश च सोमम पिबतम बर्हस्पते ऽसमिन यज्ञे मन्दसाना वर्षण्वसू |
indraś ca somam pibatam bṛhaspate 'smin yajñe mandasānā vṛṣaṇvasū |
10 Indra, Bṛhaspati, rainers of treasure, rejoicing at this sacrifice drink the Soma.
4.50.20
आ वां विशन्त्व इन्दवः सवाभुवो ऽसमे रयिं सर्ववीरं नि यछतम ||
ā vāṃ viśantv indavaḥ svābhuvo 'sme rayiṃ sarvavīraṃ ni yachatam ||
Let the abundant drops sink deep within you: vouchsafe us riches with full store of heroes.
4.50.21
बर्हस्पत इन्द्र वर्धतं नः सचा सा वां सुमतिर भूत्व अस्मे |
bṛhaspata indra vardhataṃ naḥ sacā sā vāṃ sumatir bhūtv asme |
11 Bṛhaspati and Indra, make us prosper may this be your benevolence to us-ward.
4.50.22
अविष्टं धियो जिग्र्तम पुरंधीर जजस्तम अर्यो वनुषाम अरातीः ||
aviṣṭaṃ dhiyo jighṛtam puraṃdhīr jajastam aryo vanuṣām arātīḥ ||
Assist our holy thoughts, wake up our spirit: weaken the hatred of our foe and rivals.
