4.55.1
को वस तराता वसवः को वरूता दयावाभूमी अदिते तरासीथां नः |
ko vas trātā vasavaḥ ko varūtā dyāvābhūmī adite trāsīthāṃ naḥ |
1. WHO of you, Vasus, saveth? who protecteth? O Heaven and Earth and Aditi, preserve us,
4.55.2
सहीयसो वरुण मित्र मर्तात को वो ऽधवरे वरिवो धाति देवाः ||
sahīyaso varuṇa mitra martāt ko vo 'dhvare varivo dhāti devāḥ ||
Varuṇa., Mitra, from the stronger mortal. Gods, which of you at sacrifice giveth comfort?
4.55.3
पर ये धामानि पूर्व्याण्य अर्चान वि यद उछान वियोतारो अमूराः |
pra ye dhāmāni pūrvyāṇy arcān vi yad uchān viyotāro amūrāḥ |
2 They who with laud extol the ancient statutes, when they shine forth infallible dividers,
4.55.4
विधातारो वि ते दधुर अजस्रा रतधीतयो रुरुचन्त दस्माः ||
vidhātāro vi te dadhur ajasrā ṛtadhītayo rurucanta dasmāḥ ||
Have ordered as perpetual Ordainers, and beamed as holy-thoughted Wonder-Workers.
4.55.5
पर पस्त्याम अदितिं सिन्धुम अर्कैः सवस्तिम ईळे सख्याय देवीम |
pra pastyām aditiṃ sindhum arkaiḥ svastim īḷe sakhyāya devīm |
3 The Housewife Goddess, Aditi, and Sindhu, the Goddess Svasti I implore for friendship:
4.55.6
उभे यथा नो अहनी निपात उषासानक्ता करताम अदब्धे ||
ubhe yathā no ahanī nipāta uṣāsānaktā karatām adabdhe ||
And may the unobstructed Night and Morning both, day and night, provide for our protection.
4.55.7
वय अर्यमा वरुणश चेति पन्थाम इषस पतिः सुवितं गातुम अग्निः |
vy aryamā varuṇaś ceti panthām iṣas patiḥ suvitaṃ ghātum aghniḥ |
4 Aryaman, Varuṇa have disclosed the pathway, Agni as Lord of Strength the road to welfare.
4.55.8
इन्द्राविष्णू नर्वद उ षु सतवाना शर्म नो यन्तम अमवद वरूथम ||
indrāviṣṇū nṛvad u ṣu stavānā śarma no yantam amavad varūtham ||
Lauded in manly mode may Indra-Viṣṇu grant us their powerful defence and shelter.
4.55.9
आ पर्वतस्य मरुताम अवांसि देवस्य तरातुर अव्रि भगस्य |
ā parvatasya marutām avāṃsi devasya trātur avri bhaghasya |
5 I have besought the favour of the Maruts, of Parvata, of Bhaga God who rescues.
4.55.10
पात पतिर जन्याद अंहसो नो मित्रो मित्रियाद उत न उरुष्येत ||
pāt patir janyād aṃhaso no mitro mitriyād uta na uruṣyet ||
From trouble caused by man the Lord preserve us; from woe sent by his friend let Mitra save us.
4.55.11
नू रोदसी अहिना बुध्न्येन सतुवीत देवी अप्येभिर इष्टैः |
nū rodasī ahinā budhnyena stuvīta devī apyebhir iṣṭaiḥ |
6 Agree, through these our watery oblations, Goddesses, Heaven and Earth, with Ahibudhnya.
4.55.12
समुद्रं न संचरणे सनिष्यवो घर्मस्वरसो नद्यो अप वरन ||
samudraṃ na saṃcaraṇe saniṣyavo gharmasvaraso nadyo apa vran ||
As if to win the sea, the Gharma-heaters have opened, as they come anear, the rivers.
4.55.13
देवैर नो देव्य अदितिर नि पातु देवस तराता तरायताम अप्रयुछन |
devair no devy aditir ni pātu devas trātā trāyatām aprayuchan |
7 May Goddess Aditi with Gods defend us, save us the saviour God with care unceasing.
4.55.14
नहि मित्रस्य वरुणस्य धासिम अर्हामसि परमियं सान्व अग्नेः ||
nahi mitrasya varuṇasya dhāsim arhāmasi pramiyaṃ sānv aghneḥ ||
We dare not stint the sacred food of Mitra and Varuṇa upon the back of Agni.
4.55.15
अग्निर ईशे वसव्यस्याग्निर महः सौभगस्य |
aghnir īśe vasavyasyāghnir mahaḥ saubhaghasya |
8 Agni is Sovran Lord of wealth, Agni of great prosperity:
4.55.16
तान्य अस्मभ्यं रासते ||
tāny asmabhyaṃ rāsate ||
May he bestow these gifts on us.
4.55.17
उषो मघोन्य आ वह सून्र्ते वार्या पुरु |
uṣo maghony ā vaha sūnṛte vāryā puru |
9 Hither to us, rich pleasant Dawn, bring many things to be desired,
4.55.18
अस्मभ्यं वाजिनीवति ||
asmabhyaṃ vājinīvati ||
Thou who hast ample store of wealth.
4.55.19
तत सु नः सविता भगो वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमा |
tat su naḥ savitā bhagho varuṇo mitro aryamā |
10 So then may Bhaga, Savitar, Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman, Indra, with bounty come to us.
