5.52.1
पर शयावाश्व धर्ष्णुयार्चा मरुद्भिर रक्वभिः |
pra śyāvāśva dhṛṣṇuyārcā marudbhir ṛkvabhiḥ |
1. SING boldly forth, Śyāvāśva, with the Maruts who are loud in song,
5.52.2
ये अद्रोघम अनुष्वधं शरवो मदन्ति यज्ञियाः ||
ye adrogham anuṣvadhaṃ śravo madanti yajñiyāḥ ||
Who, holy, as their wont is, joy in glory that is free from guile.
5.52.3
ते हि सथिरस्य शवसः सखायः सन्ति धर्ष्णुया |
te hi sthirasya śavasaḥ sakhāyaḥ santi dhṛṣṇuyā |
2 For in their boldness they are friends of firm and sure heroic strength.
5.52.4
ते यामन्न आ धर्षद्विनस तमना पान्ति शश्वतः ||
te yāmann ā dhṛṣadvinas tmanā pānti śaśvataḥ ||
They in their course, bold-spirited, guard all men of their own accord.
5.52.5
ते सयन्द्रासो नोक्षणो ऽति षकन्दन्ति शर्वरीः |
te syandrāso nokṣaṇo 'ti ṣkandanti śarvarīḥ |
3 Like steers in rapid motion they advance and overtake the nights;
5.52.6
मरुताम अधा महो दिवि कषमा च मन्महे ||
marutām adhā maho divi kṣamā ca manmahe ||
And thus the Maruts’ power in heaven and on the earth we celebrate.
5.52.7
मरुत्सु वो दधीमहि सतोमं यज्ञं च धर्ष्णुया |
marutsu vo dadhīmahi stomaṃ yajñaṃ ca dhṛṣṇuyā |
4 With boldness to your Maruts let us offer laud and sacrifice:
5.52.8
विश्वे ये मानुषा युगा पान्ति मर्त्यं रिषः ||
viśve ye mānuṣā yughā pānti martyaṃ riṣaḥ ||
Who all, through ages of mankind, guard mortal man from injury.
5.52.9
अर्हन्तो ये सुदानवो नरो असामिशवसः |
arhanto ye sudānavo naro asāmiśavasaḥ |
5 Praiseworthy, givers of good gifts, Heroes with full and perfect strength -
5.52.10
पर यज्ञं यज्ञियेभ्यो दिवो अर्चा मरुद्भ्यः ||
pra yajñaṃ yajñiyebhyo divo arcā marudbhyaḥ ||
To Maruts, Holy Ones of heaven, will I extol the sacrifice.
5.52.11
आ रुक्मैर आ युधा नर रष्वा रष्टीर अस्र्क्षत |
ā rukmair ā yudhā nara ṛṣvā ṛṣṭīr asṛkṣata |
6 The lofty Heroes cast their spears and weapons bright with gleaming gold.
5.52.12
अन्व एनां अह विद्युतो मरुतो जज्झतीर इव भानुर अर्त तमना दिवः ||
anv enāṃ aha vidyuto maruto jajjhatīr iva bhānur arta tmanā divaḥ ||
After these Maruts followed close, like laughing lightning from the sky, a splendour of its own accord.
5.52.13
ये वाव्र्धन्त पार्थिवा य उराव अन्तरिक्ष आ |
ye vāvṛdhanta pārthivā ya urāv antarikṣa ā |
7 They who waxed mighty, of the earth, they who are in the wide mid-air,
5.52.14
वर्जने वा नदीनां सधस्थे वा महो दिवः ||
vṛjane vā nadīnāṃ sadhasthe vā maho divaḥ ||
Or in the rivers’ compass, or in the abode of ample heaven.
5.52.15
शर्धो मारुतम उच छंस सत्यशवसम रभ्वसम |
śardho mārutam uc chaṃsa satyaśavasam ṛbhvasam |
8 Praise thou the Maruts’ company, the valorous and truly strong,
5.52.16
उत सम ते शुभे नरः पर सयन्द्रा युजत तमना ||
uta sma te śubhe naraḥ pra syandrā yujata tmanā ||
The Heroes, hasting, by themselves have yoked their deer for victory.
5.52.17
उत सम ते परुष्ण्याम ऊर्णा वसत शुन्ध्यवः |
uta sma te paruṣṇyām ūrṇā vasata śundhyavaḥ |
9 Fair-gleaming, on Paruṣṇī they have clothed themselves in robes of wool,
5.52.18
उत पव्या रथानाम अद्रिम भिन्दन्त्य ओजसा ||
uta pavyā rathānām adrim bhindanty ojasā ||
And with their chariot tires they cleave the rock asunder in their might.
5.52.19
आपथयो विपथयो ऽनतस्पथा अनुपथाः |
āpathayo vipathayo 'ntaspathā anupathāḥ |
10 Whether as wanderers from the way or speeders on or to the path,
5.52.20
एतेभिर मह्यं नामभिर यज्ञं विष्टार ओहते ||
etebhir mahyaṃ nāmabhir yajñaṃ viṣṭāra ohate ||
Under these names the spreading band tend well the sacrifice for me.
5.52.21
अधा नरो नय ओहते ऽधा नियुत ओहते |
adhā naro ny ohate 'dhā niyuta ohate |
11 To this the Heroes well attend, well do their teams attend to this.
5.52.22
अधा पारावता इति चित्रा रूपाणि दर्श्या ||
adhā pārāvatā iti citrā rūpāṇi darśyā ||
Visible are their varied forms. Behold, they are Paravatas.
5.52.23
छन्दस्तुभः कुभन्यव उत्सम आ कीरिणो नर्तुः |
chandastubhaḥ kubhanyava utsam ā kīriṇo nṛtuḥ |
12 Hymn-singing, seeking water, they, praising, have danced about the spring.
5.52.24
ते मे के चिन न तायव ऊमा आसन दर्शि तविषे ||
te me ke cin na tāyava ūmā āsan dṛśi tviṣe ||
What are they unto me? No thieves, but helpers, splendid to behold.
5.52.25
य रष्वा रष्टिविद्युतः कवयः सन्ति वेधसः |
ya ṛṣvā ṛṣṭividyutaḥ kavayaḥ santi vedhasaḥ |
13 Sublime, with lightnings for their spears, Sages and Orderers are they.
5.52.26
तम रषे मारुतं गणं नमस्या रमया गिरा ||
tam ṛṣe mārutaṃ ghaṇaṃ namasyā ramayā ghirā ||
Ṛṣi, adore that Marut host, and make them happy with thy song.
5.52.27
अछ रषे मारुतं गणं दाना मित्रं न योषणा |
acha ṛṣe mārutaṃ ghaṇaṃ dānā mitraṃ na yoṣaṇā |
14 Ṛṣi, invite the Marut band with offerings, as a maid her friend.
5.52.28
दिवो वा धर्ष्णव ओजसा सतुता धीभिर इषण्यत ||
divo vā dhṛṣṇava ojasā stutā dhībhir iṣaṇyata ||
From heaven, too, Bold Ones, in your might haste hither glorified with songs.
5.52.29
नू मन्वान एषां देवां अछा न वक्षणा |
nū manvāna eṣāṃ devāṃ achā na vakṣaṇā |
15 Thinking of these now let him come, as with the escort of the Gods,
5.52.30
दाना सचेत सूरिभिर यामश्रुतेभिर अञ्जिभिः ||
dānā saceta sūribhir yāmaśrutebhir añjibhiḥ ||
And with the splendid Princes, famed for rapid courses, to the gifts.
5.52.31
पर ये मे बन्ध्वेषे गां वोचन्त सूरयः पर्श्निं वोचन्त मातरम |
pra ye me bandhveṣe ghāṃ vocanta sūrayaḥ pṛśniṃ vocanta mātaram |
16 Princes, who, when I asked their kin, named Pṛśni as their Mother-cow,
5.52.32
अधा पितरम इष्मिणं रुद्रं वोचन्त शिक्वसः ||
adhā pitaram iṣmiṇaṃ rudraṃ vocanta śikvasaḥ ||
And the impetuous Rudra they, the Mighty Ones, declared their Sire.
5.52.33
सप्त मे सप्त शाकिन एकम-एका शता ददुः |
sapta me sapta śākina ekam-ekā śatā daduḥ |
17 The mighty ones, the seven times seven, have singly given me hundred gifts.
5.52.34
यमुनायाम अधि शरुतम उद राधो गव्यम मर्जे नि राधो अश्व्यम मर्जे ||
yamunāyām adhi śrutam ud rādho ghavyam mṛje ni rādho aśvyam mṛje ||
I have obtained on Yamuna famed wealth in kine and wealth in steeds.
