5.53.1
को वेद जानम एषां को वा पुरा सुम्नेष्व आस मरुताम |
ko veda jānam eṣāṃ ko vā purā sumneṣv āsa marutām |
1. Who knows the birth of these, or who lived in the Maruts’ favour in the days of old
5.53.2
यद युयुज्रे किलास्यः ||
yad yuyujre kilāsyaḥ ||
What time their spotted deer were yoked?
5.53.3
ऐतान रथेषु तस्थुषः कः शुश्राव कथा ययुः |
aitān ratheṣu tasthuṣaḥ kaḥ śuśrāva kathā yayuḥ |
2 Who, when they stood upon their cars, hath heard them tell the way they went?
5.53.4
कस्मै सस्रुः सुदासे अन्व आपय इळाभिर वर्ष्टयः सह ||
kasmai sasruḥ sudāse anv āpaya iḷābhir vṛṣṭayaḥ saha ||
Who was the bounteous man to whom their kindred rains flowed down with food of sacrifice?
5.53.5
ते म आहुर य आययुर उप दयुभिर विभिर मदे |
te ma āhur ya āyayur upa dyubhir vibhir made |
3 To me they told it, and they came with winged steeds radiant to the draught,
5.53.6
नरो मर्या अरेपस इमान पश्यन्न इति षटुहि ||
naro maryā arepasa imān paśyann iti ṣṭuhi ||
Youths, Heroes free from spot or stain: Behold us here and praise thou us;
5.53.7
ये अञ्जिषु ये वाशीषु सवभानवः सरक्षु रुक्मेषु खादिषु |
ye añjiṣu ye vāśīṣu svabhānavaḥ srakṣu rukmeṣu khādiṣu |
4 Who shine self-luminous with ornaments and swords, with breastplates, armlets, and with wreaths,
5.53.8
शराया रथेषु धन्वसु ||
śrāyā ratheṣu dhanvasu ||
Arrayed on chariots and with bows.
5.53.9
युष्माकं समा रथां अनु मुदे दधे मरुतो जीरदानवः |
yuṣmākaṃ smā rathāṃ anu mude dadhe maruto jīradānavaḥ |
5 O swift to pour your bounties down, ye Maruts, with delight I look upon your cars,
5.53.10
वर्ष्टी दयावो यतीर इव ||
vṛṣṭī dyāvo yatīr iva ||
Like splendours coming through the rain.
5.53.11
आ यं नरः सुदानवो ददाशुषे दिवः कोशम अचुच्यवुः |
ā yaṃ naraḥ sudānavo dadāśuṣe divaḥ kośam acucyavuḥ |
6 Munificent Heroes, they have cast heaven's treasury down for the worshipper's behoof:
5.53.12
वि पर्जन्यं सर्जन्ति रोदसी अनु धन्वना यन्ति वर्ष्टयः ||
vi parjanyaṃ sṛjanti rodasī anu dhanvanā yanti vṛṣṭayaḥ ||
They set the storm-cloud free to stream through both the worlds, and rainfloods flow o’er desert spots.
5.53.13
तत्र्दानाः सिन्धवः कषोदसा रजः पर सस्रुर धेनवो यथा |
tatṛdānāḥ sindhavaḥ kṣodasā rajaḥ pra sasrur dhenavo yathā |
7 The bursting streams m billowy flood have spread abroad, like milch-kine, o’er the firmament.
5.53.14
सयन्ना अश्वा इवाध्वनो विमोचने वि यद वर्तन्त एन्यः ||
syannā aśvā ivādhvano vimocane vi yad vartanta enyaḥ ||
Like swift steeds hasting to their journey's resting-place, to every side run glittering brooks.
5.53.15
आ यात मरुतो दिव आन्तरिक्षाद अमाद उत |
ā yāta maruto diva āntarikṣād amād uta |
8 Hither, O Maruts, come from heaven, from mid-air, or from near at hand
5.53.16
माव सथात परावतः ||
māva sthāta parāvataḥ ||
Tarry not far away from us.
5.53.17
मा वो रसानितभा कुभा करुमुर मा वः सिन्धुर नि रीरमत |
mā vo rasānitabhā kubhā krumur mā vaḥ sindhur ni rīramat |
9 So let not Rasā, Krumu, or Anitabha, Kubha, or Sindhu hold you back.
5.53.18
मा वः परि षठात सरयुः पुरीषिण्य अस्मे ईत सुम्नम अस्तु वः ||
mā vaḥ pari ṣṭhāt sarayuḥ purīṣiṇy asme īt sumnam astu vaḥ ||
Let not the watery Sarayti obstruct your way. With us be all the bliss ye give.
5.53.19
तं वः शर्धं रथानां तवेषं गणम मारुतं नव्यसीनाम |
taṃ vaḥ śardhaṃ rathānāṃ tveṣaṃ ghaṇam mārutaṃ navyasīnām |
10 That brilliant gathering of your cars, the company of Maruts, of the Youthful Ones,
5.53.20
अनु पर यन्ति वर्ष्टयः ||
anu pra yanti vṛṣṭayaḥ ||
The rain-showers, speeding on, attend.
5.53.21
शर्धं-शर्धं व एषां वरातं-वरातं गणं-गणं सुशस्तिभिः |
śardhaṃ-śardhaṃ va eṣāṃ vrātaṃ-vrātaṃ ghaṇaṃ-ghaṇaṃ suśastibhiḥ |
11 With eulogies and hymns may we follow your army, troop by troop, and band by band,
5.53.22
अनु करामेम धीतिभिः ||
anu krāmema dhītibhiḥ ||
And company by company.
5.53.23
कस्मा अद्य सुजाताय रातहव्याय पर ययुः |
kasmā adya sujātāya rātahavyāya pra yayuḥ |
12 To what oblation-giver, sprung of noble ancestry, have sped
5.53.24
एना यामेन मरुतः ||
enā yāmena marutaḥ ||
The Maruts on this course to-day?
5.53.25
येन तोकाय तनयाय धान्यम बीजं वहध्वे अक्षितम |
yena tokāya tanayāya dhānyam bījaṃ vahadhve akṣitam |
13 Vouchsafe to us the bounty, that which we implore, through which, for child and progeny,
5.53.26
अस्मभ्यं तद धत्तन यद व ईमहे राधो विश्वायु सौभगम ||
asmabhyaṃ tad dhattana yad va īmahe rādho viśvāyu saubhagham ||
Ye give the seed of corn that wasteth not away, and bliss that reacheth to all life.
5.53.27
अतीयाम निदस तिरः सवस्तिभिर हित्वावद्यम अरातीः |
atīyāma nidas tiraḥ svastibhir hitvāvadyam arātīḥ |
14 May we in safety pass by those who slander us, leaving behind disgrace and hate.
5.53.28
वर्ष्ट्वी शं योर आप उस्रि भेषजं सयाम मरुतः सह ||
vṛṣṭvī śaṃ yor āpa usri bheṣajaṃ syāma marutaḥ saha ||
Maruts, may we be there when ye, at dawn, in rest and toil, rain waters down and balm.
5.53.29
सुदेवः समहासति सुवीरो नरो मरुतः स मर्त्यः |
sudevaḥ samahāsati suvīro naro marutaḥ sa martyaḥ |
15 Favoured by Gods shall he the man, O Heroes, Marutr! and possessed of noble sons,
5.53.30
यं तरायध्वे सयाम ते ||
yaṃ trāyadhve syāma te ||
Whom ye protect. Such may we be.
5.53.31
सतुहि भोजान सतुवतो अस्य यामनि रणन गावो न यवसे |
stuhi bhojān stuvato asya yāmani raṇan ghāvo na yavase |
16 Praise the Free-givers. At this liberal patron's rite they joy like cattle in the mead.
5.53.32
यतः पूर्वां इव सखींर अनु हवय गिरा गर्णीहि कामिनः ||
yataḥ pūrvāṃ iva sakhīṃr anu hvaya ghirā ghṛṇīhi kāminaḥ ||
So call thou unto them who come as ancient Friends: hymn those who love thee with a song.
