6.48.1
यज्ञा-यज्ञा वो अग्नये गिरा-गिरा च दक्षसे |
yajñā-yajñā vo aghnaye ghirā-ghirā ca dakṣase |
1. SING to your Agni with each song, at every sacrifice, for strength.
6.48.2
पर-पर वयमम्र्तं जातवेदसं परियं मित्रं न शंसिषम ||
pra-pra vayamamṛtaṃ jātavedasaṃ priyaṃ mitraṃ na śaṃsiṣam ||
Come, let us praise the Wise and Everlasting God, even as a well-beloved Friend,
6.48.3
ऊर्जो नपातं स हिनायमस्मयुर्दाशेम हव्यदातये |
ūrjo napātaṃ sa hināyamasmayurdāśema havyadātaye |
2 The Son of Strength; for is he not our gracious Lord? Let us serve him who bears our gifts.
6.48.4
भुवद वाजेष्वविता भुवद वर्ध उत तराता तनूनाम ||
bhuvad vājeṣvavitā bhuvad vṛdha uta trātā tanūnām ||
In battle may he be our help and strengthener, yea, be the saviour of our lives.
6.48.5
वर्षा हयग्ने अजरो महान विभास्यर्चिषा |
vṛṣā hyaghne ajaro mahān vibhāsyarciṣā |
3 Agni, thou beamest forth with light, great Hero, never changed by time.
6.48.6
अजस्रेण शोचिषा शोशुचच्छुचे सुदीतिभिः सु दीदिहि ||
ajasreṇa śociṣā śośucacchuce sudītibhiḥ su dīdihi ||
Shining, pure Agni! with a light that never fades, beam with thy fair beams brilliantly.
6.48.7
महो देवान यजसि यक्ष्यानुषक तव करत्वोत दंसना |
maho devān yajasi yakṣyānuṣak tava kratvota daṃsanā |
4 Thou worshippest great Gods: bring them without delay by wisdom and thy wondrous power.
6.48.8
अर्वाचः सीं कर्णुह्यग्ने.अवसे रास्व वाजोत वंस्व ||
arvācaḥ sīṃ kṛṇuhyaghne.avase rāsva vājota vaṃsva ||
O Agni, make them turn hither to succour us. Give strength, and win it for thyself.
6.48.9
यमापो अद्रयो वना गर्भं रतस्य पिप्रति |
yamāpo adrayo vanā gharbhaṃ ṛtasya piprati |
5 He whom floods, stones, and trees support, the offspring of eternal Law;
6.48.10
सहसा यो मथितो जायते नर्भिः पर्थिव्या अधि सानवि ||
sahasā yo mathito jāyate nṛbhiḥ pṛthivyā adhi sānavi ||
He who when rubbed with force is brought to life by men upon the lofty height of earth;
6.48.11
आ यः पप्रौ भानुना रोदसी उभे धूमेन धावते दिवि |
ā yaḥ paprau bhānunā rodasī ubhe dhūmena dhāvate divi |
6 He who hath filled both worlds fult with his brilliant shine, who hastens with his smoke to heaven;
6.48.12
तिरस्तमो दद्र्श ऊर्म्यास्वा शयावास्वरुषो वर्षा शयावा अरुषो वर्षा ||
tirastamo dadṛśa ūrmyāsvā śyāvāsvaruṣo vṛṣā śyāvā aruṣo vṛṣā ||
He made himself apparent through the gloom by night, the Red Bull in the darksome nights, the Red Bull in the darksome nights.
6.48.13
बर्हद्भिरग्ने अर्चिभिः शुक्रेण देव शोचिषा |
bṛhadbhiraghne arcibhiḥ śukreṇa deva śociṣā |
7 O Agni, with thy lofty beams, with thy pure brilliancy, O God,
6.48.14
भरद्वाजे समिधानो यविष्ठ्य रेवन नः शुक्र दीदिहि दयुमत पावक दीदिहि ||
bharadvāje samidhāno yaviṣṭhya revan naḥ śukra dīdihi dyumat pāvaka dīdihi ||
Kindled, Most Youthful One! by Bharadvāja's hand, shine on us, O pure God, with wealth, shine, Purifier! splendidly.
6.48.15
विश्वासां गर्हपतिर्विशामसि तवमग्ने मानुषीणाम |
viśvāsāṃ ghṛhapatirviśāmasi tvamaghne mānuṣīṇām |
8 Thou art the Lord of house and home of all the tribes, O Agni, of all tribes of men.
6.48.16
शतं पूर्भिर्यविष्ठ पाह्यंहसः समेद्धारं शतं हिमा सतोत्र्भ्यो ये च ददति ||
śataṃ pūrbhiryaviṣṭha pāhyaṃhasaḥ sameddhāraṃ śataṃ himā stotṛbhyo ye ca dadati ||
Guard with a hundred forts thy kindler from distress, through hundred winters, Youngest God! and those who make thy singers rich.
6.48.17
तवं नश्चित्र ऊत्या वसो राधांसि चोदय |
tvaṃ naścitra ūtyā vaso rādhāṃsi codaya |
9 Wonderful, with thy favouring help, send us thy bounties, gracious Lord.
6.48.18
अस्य रायस्त्वमग्ने रथीरसि विदा गाधं तुचे तु नः ||
asya rāyastvamaghne rathīrasi vidā ghādhaṃ tuce tu naḥ ||
Thou art the Charioteer, Agni, of earthly wealth: find rest and safety for our seed.
6.48.19
पर्षि तोकं तनयं पर्त्र्भिष टवमदब्धैरप्रयुत्वभिः |
parṣi tokaṃ tanayaṃ partṛbhiṣ ṭvamadabdhairaprayutvabhiḥ |
10 With guards unfailing never negligent speed thou our children and our progeny.
6.48.20
अग्ने हेळांसि दैव्या युयोधि नो.अदेवानि हवरांसि च ||
aghne heḷāṃsi daivyā yuyodhi no.adevāni hvarāṃsi ca ||
Keep far from us, O Agni, all celestial wrath and wickedness of godless men.
6.48.21
आ सखायः सबर्दुघां धेनुमजध्वमुप नव्यसा वचः |
ā sakhāyaḥ sabardughāṃ dhenumajadhvamupa navyasā vacaḥ |
11 Hither, O friends, with newest song drive her who freely pours her milk;
6.48.22
सर्जध्वमनपस्फुराम ||
sṛjadhvamanapasphurām ||
Loose her who never turns away;
6.48.23
या शर्धाय मारुताय सवभानवे शरवो.अम्र्त्यु धुक्षत |
yā śardhāya mārutāya svabhānave śravo.amṛtyu dhukṣata |
12 Who, for the host of Maruts bright with native sheen, hath shed immortal fame like milk;
6.48.24
या मर्ळीके मरुतां तुराणां या सुम्नैरेवयावरी ||
yā mṛḷīke marutāṃ turāṇāṃ yā sumnairevayāvarī ||
Whom the impetuous Maruts look upon with love, who moves in splendour on their ways.
6.48.25
भरद्वाजायाव धुक्षत दविता |
bharadvājāyāva dhukṣata dvitā |
13 For Bharadvāja she poured down in days of old
6.48.26
धेनुं च विश्वदोहसमिषं च विश्वभोजसम ||
dhenuṃ ca viśvadohasamiṣaṃ ca viśvabhojasam ||
The milch-cow yielding milk for all, and food that gives all nourishment.
6.48.27
तं व इन्द्रं न सुक्रतुं वरुणमिव मायिनम |
taṃ va indraṃ na sukratuṃ varuṇamiva māyinam |
14 Your friend like Indra passing wise, with magic power like Varuṇa.
6.48.28
अर्यमणं न मन्द्रं सर्प्रभोजसं विष्णुं न सतुष आदिशे ||
aryamaṇaṃ na mandraṃ sṛprabhojasaṃ viṣṇuṃ na stuṣa ādiśe ||
Like Aryaman joy-giving, bringing plenteous food like ViSnxu for my wish, I praise,
6.48.29
तवेषं शर्धो न मारुतं तुविष्वण्यनर्वाणं पूषणं सं यथा शता |
tveṣaṃ śardho na mārutaṃ tuviṣvaṇyanarvāṇaṃ pūṣaṇaṃ saṃ yathā śatā |
15 Bright as the host of Maruts mighty in their roar. May they bring Pūṣan free from foes;
6.48.30
सं सहस्रा कारिषच्चर्षणिभ्य आनाविर्गूळ्हा वसू करत सुवेदा नो वसू करत ||
saṃ sahasrā kāriṣaccarṣaṇibhya ānāvirghūḷhā vasū karat suvedā no vasū karat ||
May they bring hither hundreds, thousands for our men: may they bring hidden stores to light, and make wealth easy to be found.
6.48.31
आ मा पूषन्नुप दरव शंसिषं नु ते अपिकर्ण आघ्र्णे |
ā mā pūṣannupa drava śaṃsiṣaṃ nu te apikarṇa āghṛṇe |
16 Haste to me, Pūṣan, in thine car, bright Deity: I fain would speak:
6.48.32
अघा अर्यो अरातयः ||
aghā aryo arātayaḥ ||
Most sinful is our foeman's hate.
6.48.33
मा काकम्बीरमुद वर्हो वनस्पतिमशस्तीर्वि हि नीनशः |
mā kākambīramud vṛho vanaspatimaśastīrvi hi nīnaśaḥ |
17 Tear not up by the roots the Kakambira tree: destroy thou all malignity.
6.48.34
मोत सूरो अह एवा चन गरीवा आदधते वेः ||
mota sūro aha evā cana ghrīvā ādadhate veḥ ||
Let them not snare by day the neck of that Celestial Bird the Sun.
6.48.35
दर्तेरिव ते.अव्र्कमस्तु सख्यम |
dṛteriva te.avṛkamastu sakhyam |
18 Uninjured let thy friendship be, like the smooth surface of a skin,
6.48.36
अछिद्रस्य दधन्वतः सुपूर्णस्य दधन्वतः ||
achidrasya dadhanvataḥ supūrṇasya dadhanvataḥ ||
A flawless skin, containing curds, full to the mouth, containing curds.
6.48.37
परो हि मर्त्यैरसि समो देवैरुत शरिया |
paro hi martyairasi samo devairuta śriyā |
19 For thou art high above mankind, in glory equal to the Gods.
6.48.38
अभि खयः पूषन पर्तनासु नस्त्वमवा नूनं यथा पुरा ||
abhi khyaḥ pūṣan pṛtanāsu nastvamavā nūnaṃ yathā purā ||
Therefore, O Pūṣan, look upon us in the fight: now help us as in days of old.
6.48.39
वामी वामस्य धूतयः परणीतिरस्तु सून्र्ता |
vāmī vāmasya dhūtayaḥ praṇītirastu sūnṛtā |
20 May the kind excellence of him the Kind, loud Roarers! be our guide,
6.48.40
देवस्य वामरुतो मर्त्यस्य वेजानस्य परयज्यवः ||
devasya vāmaruto martyasya vejānasya prayajyavaḥ ||
Be it the God's, O Maruts, or a mortal man's who worships, ye impetuous Ones!
6.48.41
सद्यश्चिद यस्य चर्क्र्तिः परि दयां देवो नैति सूर्यः |
sadyaścid yasya carkṛtiḥ pari dyāṃ devo naiti sūryaḥ |
21 They whose high glory in a moment like the God, the Sun, goes round the space of heaven,
6.48.42
तवेषं शवो दधिरे नाम यज्ञियं मरुतो वर्त्रहं शवो जयेष्ठं वर्त्रहं शवः ||
tveṣaṃ śavo dadhire nāma yajñiyaṃ maruto vṛtrahaṃ śavo jyeṣṭhaṃ vṛtrahaṃ śavaḥ ||
The Maruts have obtained bright strength, a sacred name, strength that destroys the Vṛtras, strength Vṛtra-destroying excellent.
6.48.43
सक्र्द ध दयौरजायत सक्र्द भूमिरजायत |
sakṛd dha dyaurajāyata sakṛd bhūmirajāyata |
22 Once, only once, the heaven was made, once only once, the earth was formed-
6.48.44
पर्श्न्या दुग्धं सक्र्त पयस्तदन्यो नानु जायते ||
pṛśnyā dughdhaṃ sakṛt payastadanyo nānu jāyate ||
Once, only Pṛśni's milk was shed: no second, after this, is born.
