6.49.1
सतुषे जनं सुव्रतं नव्यसीभिर्गीर्भिर्मित्रावरुणा सुम्नयन्ता |
stuṣe janaṃ suvrataṃ navyasībhirghīrbhirmitrāvaruṇā sumnayantā |
1. I LAUD with newest songs the Righteous People, Mitra and Varuṇa who make us happy.
6.49.2
त आ गमन्तु त इह शरुवन्तु सुक्षत्रासो वरुणोमित्रो अग्निः ||
ta ā ghamantu ta iha śruvantu sukṣatrāso varuṇomitro aghniḥ ||
Let them approach, here let them listen,Agni, Varuṇa, Mitra, Lords of fair dominion.
6.49.3
विशो-विश ईड्यमध्वरेष्वद्र्प्तक्रतुमरतिं युवत्योः |
viśo-viśa īḍyamadhvareṣvadṛptakratumaratiṃ yuvatyoḥ |
2 Him, to be praised at each tribe's sacrifices, the Two young Matrons' sober-minded Herald,
6.49.4
दिवः शिशुं सहसः सूनुमग्निं यज्ञस्य केतुमरुषं यजध्यै ||
divaḥ śiśuṃ sahasaḥ sūnumaghniṃ yajñasya ketumaruṣaṃ yajadhyai ||
The Son of Strength, the Child of Heaven, the signal of sacrifice, red Agni will I worship.
6.49.5
अरुषस्य दुहितरा विरूपे सत्र्भिरन्या पिपिशे सूरो अन्या |
aruṣasya duhitarā virūpe stṛbhiranyā pipiśe sūro anyā |
3 Unlike in form are the Red God's two Daughters: one is the Sun's, and stars bedeck the other.
6.49.6
मिथस्तुरा विचरन्ती पावके मन्म शरुतं नक्षत रच्यमाने ||
mithasturā vicarantī pāvake manma śrutaṃ nakṣata ṛcyamāne ||
Apart, the Sanctifiers, in succession, come to the famed hymn, praised in holy verses.
6.49.7
पर वायुमछा बर्हती मनीषा बर्हद्रयिं विश्ववारं रथप्राम |
pra vāyumachā bṛhatī manīṣā bṛhadrayiṃ viśvavāraṃ rathaprām |
4 I with a lofty song call hither Vāyu, all-bounteous, filler of his car, most wealthy.
6.49.8
दयुतद्यामा नियुतः पत्यमानः कविः कविमियक्षसि परयज्यो ||
dyutadyāmā niyutaḥ patyamānaḥ kaviḥ kavimiyakṣasi prayajyo ||
Thou, Sage, with bright path, Lord of harnessed horses, impetuous, promptly honourest the prudent.
6.49.9
स मे वपुश्छदयदश्विनोर्यो रथो विरुक्मान मनसा युजानः |
sa me vapuśchadayadaśvinoryo ratho virukmān manasā yujānaḥ |
5 That chariot of the Aśvins, fair to look on, pleaseth me well, yoked with a thought, refulgent,
6.49.10
येन नरा नासत्येषयध्यै वर्तिर्याथस्तनयाय तमने च ||
yena narā nāsatyeṣayadhyai vartiryāthastanayāya tmane ca ||
Wherewith, Nāsatyas, Chiefs, ye seek our dwelling, to give new strength to us and to our children.
6.49.11
पर्जन्यवाता वर्षभा पर्थिव्याः पुरीषाणि जिन्वतमप्यानि |
parjanyavātā vṛṣabhā pṛthivyāḥ purīṣāṇi jinvatamapyāni |
6 Bulls of the Earth, O Vāta and Parjanya, stir up for us the regions of the water.
6.49.12
सत्यश्रुतः कवयो यस्य गीर्भिर्जगत सथातर्जगदाक्र्णुध्वम ||
satyaśrutaḥ kavayo yasya ghīrbhirjaghata sthātarjaghadākṛṇudhvam ||
Hearers of truth, ye, Sages, World-Supporters, increase his living wealth whose songs delight you.
6.49.13
पावीरवी कन्या चित्रायुः सरस्वती वीरपत्नी धियं धात |
pāvīravī kanyā citrāyuḥ sarasvatī vīrapatnī dhiyaṃ dhāt |
7 So may Sarasvatī, the Hero's Consort, brisk with rare life, the lightning's Child, inspire us,
6.49.14
गनाभिरछिद्रं शरणं सजोषा दुराधर्षं गर्णते शर्म यंसत ||
ghnābhirachidraṃ śaraṇaṃ sajoṣā durādharṣaṃ ghṛṇate śarma yaṃsat ||
And, with the Dames accordant, give the singer a refuge unassailable and flawless.
6.49.15
पथस-पथः परिपतिं वचस्या कामेन कर्तो अभ्यानळ अर्कम |
pathas-pathaḥ paripatiṃ vacasyā kāmena kṛto abhyānaḷ arkam |
8 I praise with eloquence him who guards all pathways. He, when his love impelled him, went to Arka.
6.49.16
स नो रासच्छुरुधश्चन्द्राग्रा धियं-धियं सीषधाति पर पूषा ||
sa no rāsacchurudhaścandrāghrā dhiyaṃ-dhiyaṃ sīṣadhāti pra pūṣā ||
May he vouchsafe us gear with gold to grace it: may Pūṣan make each prayer of ours efective.
6.49.17
परथमभाजं यशसं वयोधां सुपाणिं देवं सुगभस्तिं रभ्वम |
prathamabhājaṃ yaśasaṃ vayodhāṃ supāṇiṃ devaṃ sughabhastiṃ ṛbhvam |
9 May Herald Agni, fulgent, bring for worship Tvaṣṭar adored, in homes and swift to listen,
6.49.18
होता यक्षद यजतं पस्त्यानामग्निस्त्वष्टारं सुहवं विभावा ||
hotā yakṣad yajataṃ pastyānāmaghnistvaṣṭāraṃ suhavaṃ vibhāvā ||
Glorious, first to share, the life-bestower, the ever active God, fair-armed, fair-handed.
6.49.19
भुवनस्य पितरं गीर्भिराभी रुद्रं दिवा वर्धया रुद्रमक्तौ |
bhuvanasya pitaraṃ ghīrbhirābhī rudraṃ divā vardhayā rudramaktau |
10 Rudra by day, Rudra at night we honour with these our songs, the Universe's Father.
6.49.20
बर्हन्तं रष्वमजरं सुषुम्नं रधग घुवेम कविनेषितासः ||
bṛhantaṃ ṛṣvamajaraṃ suṣumnaṃ ṛdhagh ghuvema kavineṣitāsaḥ ||
Him great and lofty, blissful, undecaying let us call specially as the Sage impels us.
6.49.21
आ युवानः कवयो यज्ञियासो मरुतो गन्त गर्णतो वरस्याम |
ā yuvānaḥ kavayo yajñiyāso maruto ghanta ghṛṇato varasyām |
11 Ye who are youthful, wise, and meet for worship, come, Martits, to the longing of the singer.
6.49.22
अचित्रं चिद धि जिन्वथा वर्धन्त इत्था नक्षन्तो नरो अङगिरस्वत ||
acitraṃ cid dhi jinvathā vṛdhanta itthā nakṣanto naro aṅghirasvat ||
Coming, as erst to Aṅgiras, O Heroes, ye animate and quicken e’en the desert.
6.49.23
पर वीराय पर तवसे तुरायाजा यूथेव पशुरक्षिरस्तम |
pra vīrāya pra tavase turāyājā yūtheva paśurakṣirastam |
12 Even as the herdsman driveth home his cattle, I urge my songs to him the strong swift Hero
6.49.24
स पिस्प्र्शति तन्वि शरुतस्य सत्र्भिर्न नाकं वचनस्यविपः ||
sa pispṛśati tanvi śrutasya stṛbhirna nākaṃ vacanasyavipaḥ ||
May he, the glorious, lay upon his body the singer's hymns, as stars bedeck the heaven.
6.49.25
यो रजांसि विममे पार्थिवानि तरिश्चिद विष्णुर्मनवे बाधिताय |
yo rajāṃsi vimame pārthivāni triścid viṣṇurmanave bādhitāya |
13 He who for man's behoof in his afiliction thrice measured out the earthly regions, Viṣṇu-
6.49.26
तस्य ते शर्मन्नुपदद्यमाने राया मदेम तन्वा तना च ||
tasya te śarmannupadadyamāne rāyā madema tanvā tanā ca ||
When one so great as thou affordeth shelter, may we with wealth and with ourselves be happy.
6.49.27
तन नो.अहिर्बुध्न्यो अब्धिरर्कैस्तत पर्वतस्तत सविता चनो धात |
tan no.ahirbudhnyo abdhirarkaistat parvatastat savitā cano dhāt |
14 Sweet be this song of mine to Ahibudhnya, Parvata, Savitar, with Floods and Lightnings;
6.49.28
तदोषधीभिरभि रातिषाचो भगः पुरन्धिर्जिन्वतु पर राये ||
tadoṣadhībhirabhi rātiṣāco bhaghaḥ purandhirjinvatu pra rāye ||
Sweet, with the Plants, to Gods who seek oblations. May liberal Bhaga speed us on to riches.
6.49.29
नु नो रयिं रथ्यं चर्षणिप्रां पुरुवीरं मह रतस्य गोपाम |
nu no rayiṃ rathyaṃ carṣaṇiprāṃ puruvīraṃ maha ṛtasya ghopām |
15 Give riches borne on cars, with many heroes, contenting men, the guard of mighty Order.
6.49.30
कषयं दाताजरं येन जनान सप्र्धो अदेवीरभि चक्रमाम विश आदेवीरभ्यश्नवाम ||
kṣayaṃ dātājaraṃ yena janān spṛdho adevīrabhi cakramāma viśa ādevīrabhyaśnavāma ||
Give us a lasting home that we may battle with godless bands of men who fight against us, and meet with tribes to whom the Gods are gracious.
