7.103.1
संवत्सरं शशयाना बराह्मणा वरतचारिणः |
saṃvatsaraṃ śaśayānā brāhmaṇā vratacāriṇaḥ |
1. THEY who lay quiet for a year, the Brahmans who fulfil their vows,
7.103.2
वाचं पर्जन्यजिन्वितां पर मण्डूका अवादिषुः ||
vācaṃ parjanyajinvitāṃ pra maṇḍūkā avādiṣuḥ ||
The Frogs have lifted up their voice, the voice Parjanya hath inspired.
7.103.3
दिव्या आपो अभि यदेनमायन दर्तिं न शुष्कं सरसी शयानम |
divyā āpo abhi yadenamāyan dṛtiṃ na śuṣkaṃ sarasī śayānam |
2 What time on these, as on a dry skin lying in the pool's bed, the floods of heaven descended,
7.103.4
गवामह न मायुर्वत्सिनीनां मण्दूकानां वग्नुरत्रा समेति ||
ghavāmaha na māyurvatsinīnāṃ maṇdūkānāṃ vaghnuratrā sameti ||
The music of the Frogs comes forth in concert like the cows lowing with their calves beside them.
7.103.5
यदीमेनानुशतो अभ्यवर्षीत तर्ष्यावतः पराव्र्ष्यागतायाम |
yadīmenānuśato abhyavarṣīt tṛṣyāvataḥ prāvṛṣyāghatāyām |
3 When at the coming of the Rains the water has poured upon them as they yearned and thirsted,
7.103.6
अख्खलीक्र्त्या पितरं न पुत्रो अन्यो अन्यमुप वदन्तमेति ||
akhkhalīkṛtyā pitaraṃ na putro anyo anyamupa vadantameti ||
One seeks another as he talks and greets him with cries of pleasure as a son his father.
7.103.7
अन्यो अन्यमनु गर्भ्णात्येनोरपां परसर्गे यदमन्दिषाताम |
anyo anyamanu ghṛbhṇātyenorapāṃ prasarghe yadamandiṣātām |
4 Each of these twain receives the other kindly, while they are revelling in the flow of waters,
7.103.8
मण्डूको यदभिव्र्ष्टः कनिष्कन पर्ष्निः सम्प्र्ङकते हरितेन वाचम ||
maṇḍūko yadabhivṛṣṭaḥ kaniṣkan pṛṣniḥ sampṛṅkte haritena vācam ||
When the Frog moistened by the rain springs forward, and Green and Spotty both combine their voices.
7.103.9
यदेषामन्यो अन्यस्य वाचं शाक्तस्येव वदति शिक्षमाणः |
yadeṣāmanyo anyasya vācaṃ śāktasyeva vadati śikṣamāṇaḥ |
5 When one of these repeats the other's language, as he who learns the lesson of the teacher,
7.103.10
सर्वं तदेषां सम्र्धेव पर्व यत सुवाचो वदथनाध्यप्सु ||
sarvaṃ tadeṣāṃ samṛdheva parva yat suvāco vadathanādhyapsu ||
Your every limb seems to be growing larger as ye converse with eloquence on the waters.
7.103.11
गोमायुरेको अजमायुरेकः पर्श्निरेको हरित एक एषाम |
ghomāyureko ajamāyurekaḥ pṛśnireko harita eka eṣām |
6 Onc is Cow-bellow and Goat-bleat the other, one Frog is Green and one of them is Spotty.
7.103.12
समानं नाम बिभ्रतो विरूपाः पुरुत्रा वाचं पिपिशुर्वदन्तः ||
samānaṃ nāma bibhrato virūpāḥ purutrā vācaṃ pipiśurvadantaḥ ||
They bear one common name, and yet they vary, and, talking, modulate the voice diversely.
7.103.13
बराह्मणासो अतिरात्रे न सोमे सरो न पूर्णमभितो वदन्तः |
brāhmaṇāso atirātre na some saro na pūrṇamabhito vadantaḥ |
7 As Brahmans, sitting round the brimful vessel, talk at the Soma-rite of Atiratra,
7.103.14
संवत्सरस्य तदहः परि षठ यन मण्डूकाः पराव्र्षीणं बभूव ||
saṃvatsarasya tadahaḥ pari ṣṭha yan maṇḍūkāḥ prāvṛṣīṇaṃ babhūva ||
So, Frogs, ye gather round the pool to honour this day of all the year, the first of Rain-time.
7.103.15
बराह्मणासः सोमिनो वाचमक्रत बरह्म कर्ण्वन्तः परिवत्सरीणम |
brāhmaṇāsaḥ somino vācamakrata brahma kṛṇvantaḥ parivatsarīṇam |
8 These Brahmans with the Soma juice, performing their year-long rite, have lifted up their voices;
7.103.16
अध्वर्यवो घर्मिणः सिष्विदाना आविर्भवन्ति गुह्या न के चित ||
adhvaryavo gharmiṇaḥ siṣvidānā āvirbhavanti ghuhyā na ke cit ||
And these Adhvaryus, sweating with their kettles, come forth and show themselves, and none are hidden.
7.103.17
देवहितिं जुगुपुर्द्वादशस्य रतुं नरो न पर मिनन्त्येते |
devahitiṃ jughupurdvādaśasya ṛtuṃ naro na pra minantyete |
9 They keep the twelve month's God-appointed order, and never do the men neglect the season.
7.103.18
संवत्सरे पराव्र्ष्यागतायां तप्ता घर्मा अश्नुवते विसर्गम ||
saṃvatsare prāvṛṣyāghatāyāṃ taptā gharmā aśnuvate visargham ||
Soon as the Rain-time in the year returneth, these who were heated kettles gain their freedom.
7.103.19
गोमायुरदादजमायुरदात पर्श्निरदाद धरितो नो वसूनि |
ghomāyuradādajamāyuradāt pṛśniradād dharito no vasūni |
10 Cow-bellow and Goat-bleat have granted riches, and Green and Spotty have vouchsafed us treasure.
7.103.20
गवां मण्डूका ददतः शतानि सहस्रसावे पर तिरन्त आयुः ||
ghavāṃ maṇḍūkā dadataḥ śatāni sahasrasāve pra tiranta āyuḥ ||
The Frogs who give us cows in hundreds lengthen our lives in this most fertilizing season.
