8.1.1
मा चिदन्यद वि शंसत सखायो मा रिषण्यत |
mā cidanyad vi śaṃsata sakhāyo mā riṣaṇyata |
1. GLORIFY naught besides, O friends; so shall no sorrow trouble you.
8.1.2
इन्द्रमित्स्तोता वर्षणं सचा सुते मुहुरुक्था च शंसत ||
indramitstotā vṛṣaṇaṃ sacā sute muhurukthā ca śaṃsata ||
Praise only mighty Indra when the juice is shed, and say your lauds repeatedly:
8.1.3
अवक्रक्षिणं वर्षभं यथाजुरं गां न चर्षणीसहम |
avakrakṣiṇaṃ vṛṣabhaṃ yathājuraṃ ghāṃ na carṣaṇīsaham |
2 Even him, eternal, like a bull who rushes down, men's Conqueror, bounteous like a cow;
8.1.4
विद्वेषणं संवननोभयंकरं मंहिष्ठमुभयाविनम ||
vidveṣaṇaṃ saṃvananobhayaṃkaraṃ maṃhiṣṭhamubhayāvinam ||
Him who is cause of both, of enmity and peace, to both sides most munificent.
8.1.5
यच्चिद धि तवा जना इमे नाना हवन्त ऊतये |
yaccid dhi tvā janā ime nānā havanta ūtaye |
3 Although these men in sundry ways invoke thee to obtain thine aid,
8.1.6
अस्माकं बरह्मेदमिन्द्र भूतु ते.अह विश्वा च वर्धनम ||
asmākaṃ brahmedamindra bhūtu te.aha viśvā ca vardhanam ||
Be this our prayer, addressed, O Indra, unto thee, thine exaltation every day.
8.1.7
वि तर्तूर्यन्ते मघवन विपश्चितो.अर्यो विपो जनानाम |
vi tartūryante maghavan vipaścito.aryo vipo janānām |
4 Those skilled in song, O Maghavan among these men oercome with might the foeman's songs.
8.1.8
उप करमस्व पुरुरूपमा भर वाजं नेदिष्ठमूतये ||
upa kramasva pururūpamā bhara vājaṃ nediṣṭhamūtaye ||
Come hither, bring us strength in many a varied form most near that it may succour us.
8.1.9
महे चन तवामद्रिवः परा शुल्काय देयाम |
mahe cana tvāmadrivaḥ parā śulkāya deyām |
5 O Caster of the Stone, I would not sell thee for a mighty price,
8.1.10
न सहस्रायनायुताय वज्रिवो न शताय शतामघ ||
na sahasrāyanāyutāya vajrivo na śatāya śatāmagha ||
Not for a thousand, Thunderer! nor ten thousand, nor a hundred, Lord of countless wealth!
8.1.11
वस्यानिन्द्रासि मे पितुरुत भरातुरभुञ्जतः |
vasyānindrāsi me pituruta bhrāturabhuñjataḥ |
6 O Indra, thou art more to me than sire or niggard brother is.
8.1.12
माता चमे छदयथः समा वसो वसुत्वनाय राधसे ||
mātā came chadayathaḥ samā vaso vasutvanāya rādhase ||
Thou and my mother, O Good Lord, appear alike, to give me wealth abundantly.
8.1.13
कवेयथ कवेदसि पुरुत्रा चिद धि ते मनः |
kveyatha kvedasi purutrā cid dhi te manaḥ |
7 Where art thou? Whither art thou gone? For many a place attracts thy mind.
8.1.14
अलर्षि युध्म खजक्र्त पुरन्दर पर गायत्रा अगासिषुः ||
alarṣi yudhma khajakṛt purandara pra ghāyatrā aghāsiṣuḥ ||
Haste, Warrior, Fort-destroyer, Lord of battle's din, haste, holy songs have sounded forth.
8.1.15
परास्मै गायत्रमर्चत वावातुर्यः पुरन्दरः |
prāsmai ghāyatramarcata vāvāturyaḥ purandaraḥ |
8 Sing out the psalm to him who breaks down castles for his faithful friend,
8.1.16
याभिःकाण्वस्योप बर्हिरासदं यासद वज्री भिनत पुरः ||
yābhiḥkāṇvasyopa barhirāsadaṃ yāsad vajrī bhinat puraḥ ||
Verses to bring the Thunderer to destroy the forts and sit on Kava's sacred grass.
8.1.17
ये ते सन्ति दशग्विनः शतिनो ये सहस्रिणः |
ye te santi daśaghvinaḥ śatino ye sahasriṇaḥ |
9 The Horses which are thine in tens, in hundreds, yea, in thousands thine,
8.1.18
अश्वासो येते वर्षणो रघुद्रुवस्तेभिर्नस्तूयमा गहि ||
aśvāso yete vṛṣaṇo raghudruvastebhirnastūyamā ghahi ||
Even those vigorous Steeds, fleet-footed in the course, with those come quickly near to us.
8.1.19
आ तवद्य सबर्दुघां हुवे गायत्रवेपसम |
ā tvadya sabardughāṃ huve ghāyatravepasam |
10 This day I call Sabardugh who animates the holy song,
8.1.20
इन्द्रं धेनुंसुदुघामन्यामिषमुरुधारामरंक्र्तम ||
indraṃ dhenuṃsudughāmanyāmiṣamurudhārāmaraṃkṛtam ||
Indra the richly-yielding Milch-cow who provides unfailing food in ample stream.
8.1.21
यत तुदत सूर एतशं वङकू वातस्य पर्णिना |
yat tudat sūra etaśaṃ vaṅkū vātasya parṇinā |
11 When Sra wounded Etaa, with Vta's rolling winged car.
8.1.22
वहत कुत्समार्जुनेयं शतक्रतुः तसरद गन्धर्वमस्त्र्तम ||
vahat kutsamārjuneyaṃ śatakratuḥ tsarad ghandharvamastṛtam ||
Indra bore Kutsa rjuneya off, and mocked Gandharva. the unconquered One.
8.1.23
य रते चिदभिश्रिषः पुरा जत्रुभ्य आत्र्दः |
ya ṛte cidabhiśriṣaḥ purā jatrubhya ātṛdaḥ |
12 He without ligature, before making incision in the neck,
8.1.24
सन्धातासन्धिं मघवा पुरूवसुरिष्कर्ता विह्रुतं पुनः ||
sandhātāsandhiṃ maghavā purūvasuriṣkartā vihrutaṃ punaḥ ||
Closed up the wound again, most wealthy Maghavan, who maketh whole the injured part.
8.1.25
मा भूम निष्ट्या इवेन्द्र तवदरणा इव |
mā bhūma niṣṭyā ivendra tvadaraṇā iva |
13 May we be never cast aside, and strangers, as it were, to thee.
8.1.26
वनानि न परजहितान्यद्रिवो दुरोषासो अमन्महि ||
vanāni na prajahitānyadrivo duroṣāso amanmahi ||
We, Thunder-wielding Indra, count ourselves as trees rejected and unfit to burn.
8.1.27
अमन्महीदनाशवो.अनुग्रासश्च वर्त्रहन |
amanmahīdanāśavo.anughrāsaśca vṛtrahan |
14 O Vtra-slayer, we were thought slow and unready for the fray.
8.1.28
सक्र्त सु ते महता शूर राधसानु सतोमं मुदीमहि ||
sakṛt su te mahatā śūra rādhasānu stomaṃ mudīmahi ||
Yet once in thy great bounty may we have delight, O Hero, after praising thee.
8.1.29
यदि सतोमं मम शरवदस्माकमिन्द्रमिन्दवः |
yadi stomaṃ mama śravadasmākamindramindavaḥ |
15 If he will listen to my laud, then may out Soma-drops that flow
8.1.30
तिरः पवित्रं सस्र्वांस आशवो मन्दन्तु तुग्र्याव्र्धः ||
tiraḥ pavitraṃ sasṛvāṃsa āśavo mandantu tughryāvṛdhaḥ ||
Rapidly through the strainer gladden Indra, drops due to the Tugryas Strengthener.
8.1.31
आ तवद्य सधस्तुतिं वावातुः सख्युरा गहि |
ā tvadya sadhastutiṃ vāvātuḥ sakhyurā ghahi |
16 Come now unto the common laud of thee and of thy faithful friend.
8.1.32
उपस्तुतिर्मघोनां पर तवावत्वधा ते वश्मि सुष्टुतिम ||
upastutirmaghonāṃ pra tvāvatvadhā te vaśmi suṣṭutim ||
So may our wealthy nobles praise give joy to thee. Fain would I sing thine eulogy.
8.1.33
सोता हि सोममद्रिभिरेमेनमप्सु धावत |
sotā hi somamadribhiremenamapsu dhāvata |
17 Press out the Soma with the stones, and in the waters wash it clean.
8.1.34
गव्या वस्त्रेव वासयन्त इन नरो निर्धुक्षन वक्षणाभ्यः ||
ghavyā vastreva vāsayanta in naro nirdhukṣan vakṣaṇābhyaḥ ||
The men investing it with raiment made of milk shall milk it forth from out the stems.
8.1.35
अध जमो अध वा दिवो बर्हतो रोचनादधि |
adha jmo adha vā divo bṛhato rocanādadhi |
18 Whether thou come from earth or from the lustre of the lofty heaven,
8.1.36
अया वर्धस्व तन्वा गिरा ममा जाता सुक्रतो पर्ण ||
ayā vardhasva tanvā ghirā mamā jātā sukrato pṛṇa ||
Wax stronger in thy body through my song of praise: fill full all creatures, O most Wise.
8.1.37
इन्द्राय सु मदिन्तमं सोमं सोता वरेण्यम |
indrāya su madintamaṃ somaṃ sotā vareṇyam |
19 For India press the Soma out, most gladdening and most excellent.
8.1.38
शक्र एणं पीपयद विश्वया धिया हिन्वानं न वाजयुम ||
śakra eṇaṃ pīpayad viśvayā dhiyā hinvānaṃ na vājayum ||
May akra make it swell sent forth with every prayer and asking, as it were, for strength.
8.1.39
मा तवा सोमस्य गल्दया सदा याचन्नहं गिरा |
mā tvā somasya ghaldayā sadā yācannahaṃ ghirā |
20 Let me not, still beseeching thee with earnest song at Soma rites,
8.1.40
भूर्णिं मर्गं न सवनेषु चुक्रुधं क ईशानं न याचिषत ||
bhūrṇiṃ mṛghaṃ na savaneṣu cukrudhaṃ ka īśānaṃ na yāciṣat ||
Anger thee like
8.1.41
मदेनेषितं मदमुग्रमुग्रेण शवसा |
madeneṣitaṃ madamughramughreṇa śavasā |

विश्वेषां तरुतारं मदच्युतं मदे हि षमा ददाति नः ||
viśveṣāṃ tarutāraṃ madacyutaṃ made hi ṣmā dadāti naḥ ||
wild beast. Who would not beseech him who hath power to grant his prayer?
8.1.43
शेवारे वार्या पुरु देवो मर्ताय दाशुषे |
śevāre vāryā puru devo martāya dāśuṣe |
21 The draught made swift with rapturous joy, effectual with its mighty strength,
8.1.44
स सुन्वते चस्तुवते च रासते विश्वगूर्तो अरिष्टुतः ||
sa sunvate castuvate ca rāsate viśvaghūrto ariṣṭutaḥ ||
All-conquering, distilling transport, let him drink: for he in ecstasy gives us gifts.
8.1.45
एन्द्र याहि मत्स्व चित्रेण देव राधसा |
endra yāhi matsva citreṇa deva rādhasā |
22 Where bliss is not, may he, All-praised, God whom the pious glorify,
8.1.46
सरो न परास्युदरं सपीतिभिरा सोमेभिरुरु सफिरम ||
saro na prāsyudaraṃ sapītibhirā somebhiruru sphiram ||
Bestow great wealth upon the mortal worshipper who sheds the juice and praises him.
8.1.47
आ तवा सहस्रमा शतं युक्ता रथे हिरण्यये |
ā tvā sahasramā śataṃ yuktā rathe hiraṇyaye |
23 Come, Indra, and rejoice thyself, O God, in manifold affluence.
8.1.48
बरह्मयुजो हरय इन्द्र केशिनो वहन्तु सोमपीतये ||
brahmayujo haraya indra keśino vahantu somapītaye ||
Thou fillest like a lake thy vast capacious bulk with Soma and with draughts besides.
8.1.49
आ तवा रथे हिरण्यये हरी मयूरशेप्या |
ā tvā rathe hiraṇyaye harī mayūraśepyā |
24 A thousand and a hundred Steeds are harnessed to thy golden car.
8.1.50
शितिप्र्ष्ठा वहतां मध्वो अन्धसो विवक्षणस्य पीतये ||
śitipṛṣṭhā vahatāṃ madhvo andhaso vivakṣaṇasya pītaye ||
So may the long-maned Bays, yoked by devotion, bring Indra to drink the Soma juice.
8.1.51
पिबा तवस्य गिर्वणः सुतस्य पूर्वपा इव |
pibā tvasya ghirvaṇaḥ sutasya pūrvapā iva |
25 Yoked to thy chariot wrought of gold, may thy two Bays with peacock tails,
8.1.52
परिष्क्र्तस्य रसिन इयमासुतिश्चारुर्मदाय पत्यते ||
pariṣkṛtasya rasina iyamāsutiścārurmadāya patyate ||
Convey thee hither, Steeds with their white backs, to quaff sweet juice that makes us eloquent.
8.1.53
य एको अस्ति दंसना महानुग्रो अभि वरतैः |
ya eko asti daṃsanā mahānughro abhi vrataiḥ |
26 So drink, thou Lover of the Song, as the first drinker, of this juice.
8.1.54
गमत स शिप्री न स योषदा गमद धवं न परि वर्जति ||
ghamat sa śiprī na sa yoṣadā ghamad dhavaṃ na pari varjati ||
This the outpouring of the savoury sap prepared is good and meet to gladden thee.
8.1.55
तवं पुरं चरिष्ण्वं वधैः शुष्णस्य सं पिणक |
tvaṃ puraṃ cariṣṇvaṃ vadhaiḥ śuṣṇasya saṃ piṇak |
27 He who alone by wondrous deed is Mighty, Strong by holy works,
8.1.56
तवम्भा अनु चरो अध दविता यदिन्द्र हव्यो भुवः ||
tvambhā anu caro adha dvitā yadindra havyo bhuvaḥ ||
May he come, fair of cheek; may he not stay afar, but come and turn not from our call.
8.1.57
मम तवा सूर उदिते मम मध्यन्दिने दिवः |
mama tvā sūra udite mama madhyandine divaḥ |
28 ua's quick moving castle thou hast crushed to pieces with thy bolts.
8.1.58
मम परपित्वेपिशर्वरे वसवा सतोमासो अव्र्त्सत ||
mama prapitveapiśarvare vasavā stomāso avṛtsata ||
Thou, Indra, from of old, hast followed after light, since we have had thee to invoke.
8.1.59
सतुहि सतुहीदेते घा ते मंहिष्ठासो मघोनाम |
stuhi stuhīdete ghā te maṃhiṣṭhāso maghonām |
29 My praises when the Sun hath risen, my praises at the time of noon,
8.1.60
निन्दिताश्वः परपथी परमज्या मघस्य मेध्यातिथे ||
ninditāśvaḥ prapathī paramajyā maghasya medhyātithe ||
My praises at the coming of the gloom of night, O Vasu, have gone forth to thee.
8.1.61
आ यदश्वान वनन्वतः शरद्धयाहं रथे रुहम |
ā yadaśvān vananvataḥ śraddhayāhaṃ rathe ruham |
30 Praise yea, praise him. Of princes these are the most liberal of their gifts,
8.1.62
उतवामस्य वसुनश्चिकेतति यो अस्ति याद्वः पशुः ||
utavāmasya vasunaściketati yo asti yādvaḥ paśuḥ ||
These, Paramajy, Ninditva, Prapath, most bounteous, O Medhytithi.
8.1.63
य रज्रा मह्यं मामहे सह तवचा हिरण्यया |
ya ṛjrā mahyaṃ māmahe saha tvacā hiraṇyayā |
31 When to the car, by faith, I yoked the horses longing for the way-
8.1.64
एष विश्वान्यभ्यस्तु सौभगासङगस्य सवनद्रथः ||
eṣa viśvānyabhyastu saubhaghāsaṅghasya svanadrathaḥ ||
For skilled is Yadu's son in dealing precious wealth, he who is rich in herds of kine.
8.1.65
अध पलायोगिरति दासदन्यानासङगो अग्ने दशभिः सहस्रैः |
adha plāyoghirati dāsadanyānāsaṅgho aghne daśabhiḥ sahasraiḥ |
32 May he who gave me two brown steeds together with their cloths of gold,
8.1.66
अधोक्षणो दश मह्यं रुशन्तो नळा इव सरसो निरतिष्ठन ||
adhokṣaṇo daśa mahyaṃ ruśanto naḷā iva saraso niratiṣṭhan ||
May he, saga's son Svanadratha, obtain all joy and high felicities.
8.1.67
अन्वस्य सथूरं दद्र्शे पुरस्तादनस्थ ऊरुरवरम्बमाणः |
anvasya sthūraṃ dadṛśe purastādanastha ūruravarambamāṇaḥ |
33 Playoga's son saga, by ten thousand, O Agni, hath surpassed the rest in giving.
8.1.68
शश्वती नार्यभिचक्ष्याह सुभद्रमर्य भोजनं बिभर्षि ||
śaśvatī nāryabhicakṣyāha subhadramarya bhojanaṃ bibharṣi ||
For me ten bright-hued oxen have come forward like lotus-stalks from out a lake upstanding.
