8.13.1
इन्द्रः सुतेषु सोमेषु करतुं पुनीत उक्थ्यम |
indraḥ suteṣu someṣu kratuṃ punīta ukthyam |
1. INDRA, when Soma juices flow, makes his mind pure and meet for lauds.
8.13.2
विदे वर्धस्यदक्षसो महान हि षः ||
vide vṛdhasyadakṣaso mahān hi ṣaḥ ||
He gains the power that brings success, for great is he.
8.13.3
स परथमे वयोमनि देवानां सदने वर्धः |
sa prathame vyomani devānāṃ sadane vṛdhaḥ |
2 In heaven's first region, in the seat of Gods, is he who brings success,
8.13.4
सुपारः सुश्रवस्तमः समप्सुजित ||
supāraḥ suśravastamaḥ samapsujit ||
Most glorious, prompt to save, who wins the water-floods.
8.13.5
तमह्वे वाजसातय इन्द्रं भराय शुष्मिणम |
tamahve vājasātaya indraṃ bharāya śuṣmiṇam |
3 Him, to win strength, have I invoked, even Indra mighty for the fray.
8.13.6
भवा नःसुम्ने अन्तमः सखा वर्धे ||
bhavā naḥsumne antamaḥ sakhā vṛdhe ||
Be thou most near to us for bliss, a Friend to aid.
8.13.7
इयं त इन्द्र गिर्वणो रातिः कषरति सुन्वतः |
iyaṃ ta indra ghirvaṇo rātiḥ kṣarati sunvataḥ |
4 Indra, Song -lover, here for thee the worshipper's libation flows.
8.13.8
मन्दानो अस्य बर्हिषो वि राजसि ||
mandāno asya barhiṣo vi rājasi ||
Rejoicing in this sacred grass thou shinest forth.
8.13.9
नूनं तदिन्द्र दद्धि नो यत तवा सुन्वन्त ईमहे |
nūnaṃ tadindra daddhi no yat tvā sunvanta īmahe |
5 Even now, O Indra, give us that which, pressing juice, we crave of thee.
8.13.10
रयिं नश्चित्रमा भरा सवर्विदम ||
rayiṃ naścitramā bharā svarvidam ||
Bring us wealth manifold which finds the light of heaven.
8.13.11
सतोता यत ते विचर्षणिरतिप्रशर्धयद गिरः |
stotā yat te vicarṣaṇiratipraśardhayad ghiraḥ |
6 What time the zealous worshipper hath boldly sung his songs to thee,
8.13.12
वया इवानु रोहते जुषन्त यत ||
vayā ivānu rohate juṣanta yat ||
Like branches of a tree up-grows what they desire.
8.13.13
परत्नवज्जनया गिरः शर्णुधी जरितुर्हवम |
pratnavajjanayā ghiraḥ śṛṇudhī jariturhavam |
7 Generate songs even as of old, give car unto the singer's call.
8.13.14
मदे-मदे ववक्षिथा सुक्र्त्वने ||
made-made vavakṣithā sukṛtvane ||
Thou for the pious hast grown great at each carouse.
8.13.15
करीळन्त्यस्य सून्र्ता आपो न परवता यतीः |
krīḷantyasya sūnṛtā āpo na pravatā yatīḥ |
8 Sweet strains that glorify him play like waters speeding down a slope,
8.13.16
अया धिया य उच्यते पतिर्दिवः ||
ayā dhiyā ya ucyate patirdivaḥ ||
Yea, him who in this song is called the Lord of Heaven;
8.13.17
उतो पतिर्य उच्यते कर्ष्टीनामेक इद वशी |
uto patirya ucyate kṛṣṭīnāmeka id vaśī |
9 Yea, who alone is called the Lord, the single Ruler of the folk,
8.13.18
नमोव्र्धैरवस्युभिः सुते रण ||
namovṛdhairavasyubhiḥ sute raṇa ||
By worshippers seeking aid: may he joy in the draught.
8.13.19
सतुहि शरुतं विपश्चितं हरी यस्य परसक्षिणा |
stuhi śrutaṃ vipaścitaṃ harī yasya prasakṣiṇā |
10 Praise him, the Glorious, skilled in song, Lord of the two victorious Bays:
8.13.20
गन्तारा दाशुषो गर्हं नमस्विनः ||
ghantārā dāśuṣo ghṛhaṃ namasvinaḥ ||
They seek the worshipper's abode who bows in prayer.
8.13.21
तूतुजानो महेमते.अश्वेभिः परुषितप्सुभिः |
tūtujāno mahemate.aśvebhiḥ pruṣitapsubhiḥ |
11 Put forth thy strength: with dappled Steeds come, thou of mighty intellect,
8.13.22
आ याहि यज्ञमाशुभिः शमिद धि ते ||
ā yāhi yajñamāśubhiḥ śamid dhi te ||
With swift Steeds to the sacrifice, for ’tis thy joy.
8.13.23
इन्द्र शविष्ठ सत्पते रयिं गर्णत्सु धारय |
indra śaviṣṭha satpate rayiṃ ghṛṇatsu dhāraya |
12 Grant wealth to those who praise thee, Lord of Heroes, Mightiest Indra: give
8.13.24
शरवः सूरिभ्यो अम्र्तं वसुत्वनम ||
śravaḥ sūribhyo amṛtaṃ vasutvanam ||
Our princes everlasting fame and opulence.
8.13.25
हवे तवा सूर उदिते हवे मध्यन्दिने दिवः |
have tvā sūra udite have madhyandine divaḥ |
13 I call thee when the Sun is risen, I call thee at the noon of day:
8.13.26
जुषाण इन्द्र सप्तिभिर्न आ गहि ||
juṣāṇa indra saptibhirna ā ghahi ||
With thy car-horses, Indra, come wellpleased to us.
8.13.27
आ तू गहि पर तु दरव मत्स्वा सुतस्य गोमतः |
ā tū ghahi pra tu drava matsvā sutasya ghomataḥ |
14 Speed forward hither, come to us, rejoice thee in the milky draught:
8.13.28
तन्तुं तनुष्व पूर्व्यं यथा विदे ||
tantuṃ tanuṣva pūrvyaṃ yathā vide ||
Spin out the thread of ancient time, as well is known.
8.13.29
यच्छक्रासि परावति यदर्वावति वर्त्रहन |
yacchakrāsi parāvati yadarvāvati vṛtrahan |
15 If, Śakra, Vṛtra-slayer, thou be far away or near to us.
8.13.30
यद वा समुद्रे अन्धसो.अवितेदसि ||
yad vā samudre andhaso.avitedasi ||
Or in the sea, thou art the guard of Soma juice.
8.13.31
इन्द्रं वर्धन्तु नो गिर इन्द्रं सुतास इन्दवः |
indraṃ vardhantu no ghira indraṃ sutāsa indavaḥ |
16 Let songs we sing and Soma-drops expressed by us make Indra strong:
8.13.32
इन्द्रे हविष्मतीर्विशो अराणिषुः ||
indre haviṣmatīrviśo arāṇiṣuḥ ||
The tribes who bring oblations find delight in him.
8.13.33
तमिद विप्रा अवस्यवः परवत्वतीभिरूतिभिः |
tamid viprā avasyavaḥ pravatvatībhirūtibhiḥ |
17 Him sages longing for his aid, with offerings brought in eager haste,
8.13.34
इन्द्रं कषोणीरवर्धयन वया इव ||
indraṃ kṣoṇīravardhayan vayā iva ||
Him. even as branches, all mankind have made to grow.
8.13.35
तरिकद्रुकेषु चेतनं देवासो यज्ञमत्नत |
trikadrukeṣu cetanaṃ devāso yajñamatnata |
18 At the Trkadrukas the Gods span sacrifice that stirred the mind:
8.13.36
तमिद वर्धन्तुनो गिरः सदाव्र्धम ||
tamid vardhantuno ghiraḥ sadāvṛdham ||
May our songs strengthen him who still hath strengthened us.
8.13.37
सतोता यत ते अनुव्रत उक्थान्य रतुथा दधे |
stotā yat te anuvrata ukthāny ṛtuthā dadhe |
19 When, true to duty, at due times the worshipper offers lauds to thee,
8.13.38
शुचिः पावक उच्यते सो अद्भुतः ||
śuciḥ pāvaka ucyate so adbhutaḥ ||
They call him Purifier, Pure, and Wonderful.
8.13.39
तदिद रुद्रस्य चेतति यह्वं परत्नेषु धामसु |
tadid rudrasya cetati yahvaṃ pratneṣu dhāmasu |
20 That mind of Rudra, fresh and strong, moves conscious in the ancient ways,
8.13.40
मनो यत्रावि तद दधुर्विचेतसः ||
mano yatrāvi tad dadhurvicetasaḥ ||
With reference whereto the wise have ordered this.
8.13.41
यदि मे सख्यमावर इमस्य पाह्यन्धसः |
yadi me sakhyamāvara imasya pāhyandhasaḥ |
21 If thou elect to be my Friend drink of this sacrificial juice,
8.13.42
येन विश्वा अति दविषो अतारिम ||
yena viśvā ati dviṣo atārima ||
By help whereof we may subdue all enemies.
8.13.43
कदा त इन्द्र गिर्वण सतोता भवाति शन्तमः |
kadā ta indra ghirvaṇa stotā bhavāti śantamaḥ |
22 O Indra, Lover of the song, when shall thy praiser be most blest?
8.13.44
कदा नो गव्ये अश्व्ये वसौ दधः ||
kadā no ghavye aśvye vasau dadhaḥ ||
When wilt thou grant us wealth in herds of kine and steeds?
8.13.45
उत ते सुष्टुता हरी वर्षणा वहतो रथम |
uta te suṣṭutā harī vṛṣaṇā vahato ratham |
23 And thy two highIy-lauded Bays, strong stallions, draw thy car who art
8.13.46
अजुर्यस्य मदिन्तमं यमीमहे ||
ajuryasya madintamaṃ yamīmahe ||
Untouched by age, most gladdening car for which we pray.
8.13.47
तमीमहे पुरुष्टुतं यह्वं परत्नाभिरूतिभिः |
tamīmahe puruṣṭutaṃ yahvaṃ pratnābhirūtibhiḥ |
24 With ancient offerings we implore the Young and Strong whom many praise.
8.13.48
नि बर्हिषि परिये सददध दविता ||
ni barhiṣi priye sadadadha dvitā ||
He from of old hath sat upon dear sacred grass.
8.13.49
वर्धस्वा सु पुरुष्टुत रषिष्टुताभिरूतिभिः |
vardhasvā su puruṣṭuta ṛṣiṣṭutābhirūtibhiḥ |
25 Wax miglity, thou whom many laud for aids which Ṛṣis have extolled.
8.13.50
धुक्षस्वपिप्युषीमिषमवा च नः ||
dhukṣasvapipyuṣīmiṣamavā ca naḥ ||
Pour down for us abundant food and guard us well.
8.13.51
इन्द्र तवमवितेदसीत्था सतुवतो अद्रिवः |
indra tvamavitedasītthā stuvato adrivaḥ |
26 O Indra, Caster of the Stone, thou helpest him who praises thee:
8.13.52
रतादियर्मि ते धियं मनोयुजम ||
ṛtādiyarmi te dhiyaṃ manoyujam ||
From sacrifice I send to thee a mindyoked hymn.
8.13.53
इह तया सधमाद्य युजानः सोमपीतये |
iha tyā sadhamādya yujānaḥ somapītaye |
27 Here, yoking for the Soma-draught these Horses, sharers of thy feast,
8.13.54
हरी इन्द्र परतद्वसू अभि सवर ||
harī indra pratadvasū abhi svara ||
Thy Bay Steeds, Indra, fraught with weal tb, consent to come.
8.13.55
अभि सवरन्तु ये तव रुद्रासः सक्षत शरियम |
abhi svarantu ye tava rudrāsaḥ sakṣata śriyam |
28 Attendants on thy glory, let the Rudras roar assent to thee,
8.13.56
उतो मरुत्वतीर्विशो अभि परयः ||
uto marutvatīrviśo abhi prayaḥ ||
And all the Marut companies come tothe feast.
8.13.57
इमा अस्य परतूर्तयः पदं जुषन्त यद दिवि |
imā asya pratūrtayaḥ padaṃ juṣanta yad divi |
29 These his victorious followers bold in the heavens the place they love,
8.13.58
नाभा यज्ञस्य सं दधुर्यथा विदे ||
nābhā yajñasya saṃ dadhuryathā vide ||
Leagued in the heart of sacrifice, as well we know.
8.13.59
अयं दीर्घाय चक्षसे पराचि परयत्यध्वरे |
ayaṃ dīrghāya cakṣase prāci prayatyadhvare |
30 That we may long behold the light, what time the ordered rite proceeds,
8.13.60
मिमीते यज्ञमानुषग विचक्ष्य ||
mimīte yajñamānuṣagh vicakṣya ||
He duly measures, as he views, the sacrifice.
8.13.61
वर्षायमिन्द्र ते रथ उतो ते वर्षणा हरी |
vṛṣāyamindra te ratha uto te vṛṣaṇā harī |
31 O Indra, strong is this thy car, and strong are these Bay Steeds of thine:
8.13.62
वर्षा तवंशतक्रतो वर्षा हवः ||
vṛṣā tvaṃśatakrato vṛṣā havaḥ ||
O Śatakratu, thou art strong, strong is our call.
8.13.63
वर्षा गरावा वर्षा मदो वर्षा सोमो अयं सुतः |
vṛṣā ghrāvā vṛṣā mado vṛṣā somo ayaṃ sutaḥ |
32 Strong is the press-stone, strong thy joy, strong is the flowing Soma juice:
8.13.64
वर्षायज्ञो यमिन्वसि वर्षा हवः ||
vṛṣāyajño yaminvasi vṛṣā havaḥ ||
Strong is the rite thou furtherest, strong is our call.
8.13.65
वर्षा तवा वर्षणं हुवे वज्रिञ्चित्राभिरुतिभिः |
vṛṣā tvā vṛṣaṇaṃ huve vajriñcitrābhirutibhiḥ |
33 As strong I call on thee the Strong, O Thunderer with thy thousand aids:
8.13.66
वावन्थ हि परतिष्टुतिं वर्षा हवः ||
vāvantha hi pratiṣṭutiṃ vṛṣā havaḥ ||
For thou hast won the hymn of praise. Strong is our call.
