8.15.1
तं वभि पर गायत पुरुहूतं पुरुष्टुतम |
taṃ vabhi pra ghāyata puruhūtaṃ puruṣṭutam |
1. SING forth to him whom many men invoke, to him whom many laud.
8.15.2
इन्द्रं गीर्भिस्तविषमा विवासत ||
indraṃ ghīrbhistaviṣamā vivāsata ||
Invite the powerful Indra with your songs of praise.
8.15.3
यस्य दविबर्हसो बर्हत सहो दाधार रोदसी |
yasya dvibarhaso bṛhat saho dādhāra rodasī |
2 Whose lofty might-for doubly strong is he-supports the heavens and earth,
8.15.4
गिरीन्रज्रानपः सवर्व्र्षत्वना ||
ghirīnrajrānapaḥ svarvṛṣatvanā ||
And hills and plains and floods and light with manly power.
8.15.5
स राजसि पुरुष्टुत एको वर्त्राणि जिघ्नसे |
sa rājasi puruṣṭuta eko vṛtrāṇi jighnase |
3 Such, Praised by many! thou art King alone thou smitest Vṛtras dead,
8.15.6
इन्द्र जैत्रा शरवस्या च यन्तवे ||
indra jaitrā śravasyā ca yantave ||
To gain, O Indra, spoils of war and high renown.
8.15.7
तं ते मदं गर्णीमसि वर्षणं पर्त्सु सासहिम |
taṃ te madaṃ ghṛṇīmasi vṛṣaṇaṃ pṛtsu sāsahim |
4 We sing this strong and wild delight of thine which conquers in the fray,
8.15.8
उ लोकक्र्त्नुमद्रिवो हरिश्रियम ||
u lokakṛtnumadrivo hariśriyam ||
Which, Caster of the Stone! gives room and shines like gold.
8.15.9
येन जयोतींष्यायवे मनवे च विवेदिथ |
yena jyotīṃṣyāyave manave ca viveditha |
5 Wherewith thou also foundest lights for Āyu and for Manu's sake:
8.15.10
मन्दानो अस्य बर्हिषो वि राजसि ||
mandāno asya barhiṣo vi rājasi ||
Now joying in this sacred grass thou beamest forth.
8.15.11
तदद्या चित त उक्थिनो.अनु षटुवन्ति पूर्वथा |
tadadyā cit ta ukthino.anu ṣṭuvanti pūrvathā |
6 This day too singers of the hymn praise, as of old, this might of thine:
8.15.12
वर्षपत्नीरपो जया दिवे-दिवे ||
vṛṣapatnīrapo jayā dive-dive ||
Win thou the waters day by day, thralls of the strong.
8.15.13
तव तयदिन्द्रियं बर्हत तव शुष्ममुत करतुम |
tava tyadindriyaṃ bṛhat tava śuṣmamuta kratum |
7 That lofty Indra-power of thine, thy strength and thine intelligence,
8.15.14
वज्रं शिशाति धिषणा वरेण्यम ||
vajraṃ śiśāti dhiṣaṇā vareṇyam ||
Thy thunderbolt for which we long, the wish makes keen.
8.15.15
तव दयौरिन्द्र पौंस्यं पर्थिवी वर्धति शरवः |
tava dyaurindra pauṃsyaṃ pṛthivī vardhati śravaḥ |
8 O Indra, Heaven and Earth augment thy manly power and thy renown;
8.15.16
तवामापः पर्वतासश्च हिन्विरे ||
tvāmāpaḥ parvatāsaśca hinvire ||
The waters and thy mountains stir and urge thee on.
8.15.17
तवां विष्णुर्ब्र्हन कषयो मित्रो गर्णाति वरुणः |
tvāṃ viṣṇurbṛhan kṣayo mitro ghṛṇāti varuṇaḥ |
9 Viṣṇu the lofty ruling Power, Varuṇa, Mitra sing thy praise:
8.15.18
तवांशर्धो मदत्यनु मारुतम ||
tvāṃśardho madatyanu mārutam ||
In thee the Marut3' company have great delight.
8.15.19
तवं वर्षा जनानां मंहिष्ठ इन्द्र जज्ञिषे |
tvaṃ vṛṣā janānāṃ maṃhiṣṭha indra jajñiṣe |
10 O Indra, thou wast born the Lord of men, most liberal of thy gifts:
8.15.20
सत्रा विश्वा सवपत्यानि दधिषे ||
satrā viśvā svapatyāni dadhiṣe ||
Excellent deeds for evermore are all thine own.
8.15.21
सत्रा तवं पुरुष्टुत एको वर्त्राणि तोशसे |
satrā tvaṃ puruṣṭuta eko vṛtrāṇi tośase |
11 Ever, alone, O highly-praised, thou sendest Vṛtras to their rest:
8.15.22
नान्य इन्द्रात्करणं भूय इन्वति ||
nānya indrātkaraṇaṃ bhūya invati ||
None else than Indra executes the mighty deed.
8.15.23
यदिन्द्र मन्मशस्त्वा नाना हवन्त ऊतये |
yadindra manmaśastvā nānā havanta ūtaye |
12 Though here and there, in varied hymns, Indra, men call on thee for aid,
8.15.24
अस्माकेभिर्न्र्भिरत्रा सवर्जय ||
asmākebhirnṛbhiratrā svarjaya ||
Still with our heroes fight and win the light of heaven.
8.15.25
अरं कषयाय नो महे विश्वा रूपाण्याविशन |
araṃ kṣayāya no mahe viśvā rūpāṇyāviśan |
13 Already have all forms of him entered our spacious dwelling-place:
8.15.26
इन्द्रं जैत्राय हर्षया शचीपतिम ||
indraṃ jaitrāya harṣayā śacīpatim ||
For victory stir thou Indra, up, the Lord of Might.
