8.2.1
इदं वसो सुतमन्धः पिबा सुपूर्णमुदरम |
idaṃ vaso sutamandhaḥ pibā supūrṇamudaram |
1. HERE is the Soma juice expressed; O Vasu, drink till thou art full:
8.2.2
अनाभयिन ररिमा ते ||
anābhayin rarimā te ||
Undaunted God, we give it thee.
8.2.3
नर्भिर्धूतः सुतो अश्नैरव्यो वारैः परिपूतः |
nṛbhirdhūtaḥ suto aśnairavyo vāraiḥ paripūtaḥ |
2 Washed by the men, pressed out with stones, strained through the filter made of wool,
8.2.4
अश्वोन निक्तो नदीषु ||
aśvona nikto nadīṣu ||
’Tis like a courser bathed in stream.
8.2.5
तं ते यवं यथा गोभिः सवादुमकर्म शरीणन्तः |
taṃ te yavaṃ yathā ghobhiḥ svādumakarma śrīṇantaḥ |
3 This juice have we made sweet for thee like barley, blending it with milk.
8.2.6
इन्द्र तवास्मिन सधमादे ||
indra tvāsmin sadhamāde ||
Indra, I call thee to our feast.
8.2.7
इन्द्र इत सोमपा एक इन्द्रः सुतपा विश्वायुः |
indra it somapā eka indraḥ sutapā viśvāyuḥ |
4 Beloved of all, Indra alone drinks up the flowing Soma juice
8.2.8
अन्तर्देवान मर्त्यांश्च ||
antardevān martyāṃśca ||
Among the Gods and mortal men.
8.2.9
न यं शुक्रो न दुराशीर्न तर्प्रा उरुव्यचसम |
na yaṃ śukro na durāśīrna tṛprā uruvyacasam |
5 The Friend, whom not the brilliant-hued, the badly-mixt or bitter draught,
8.2.10
अपस्प्र्ण्वते सुहार्दम ||
apaspṛṇvate suhārdam ||
Repels, the far-extending God;
8.2.11
गोभिर्यदीमन्ये अस्मन मर्गं न वरा मर्गयन्ते |
ghobhiryadīmanye asman mṛghaṃ na vrā mṛghayante |
6 While other men than we with milk chase him as hunters chase a deer,
8.2.12
अभित्सरन्ति धेनुभिः ||
abhitsaranti dhenubhiḥ ||
And with their kine inveigle him.
8.2.13
तरय इन्द्रस्य सोमाः सुतासः सन्तु देवस्य |
traya indrasya somāḥ sutāsaḥ santu devasya |
7 For him, for Indra, for the God, be pressed three draughts of Soma juice
8.2.14
सवे कषये सुतपाव्नः ||
sve kṣaye sutapāvnaḥ ||
In the juice-drinker's own abode.
8.2.15
तरयः कोशासः शचोतन्ति तिस्रश्चम्वः सुपूर्णाः |
trayaḥ kośāsaḥ ścotanti tisraścamvaḥ supūrṇāḥ |
8 Three reservoirs exude their drops, filled are three beakers to the brim,
8.2.16
समाने अधि भार्मन ||
samāne adhi bhārman ||
All for one offering to the God.
8.2.17
शुचिरसि पुरुनिष्ठाः कषीरैर्मध्यत आशीर्तः |
śucirasi puruniṣṭhāḥ kṣīrairmadhyata āśīrtaḥ |
9 Pure art thou, set in many a place, and blended in the midst with milk
8.2.18
दध्ना मन्दिष्ठः शूरस्य ||
dadhnā mandiṣṭhaḥ śūrasya ||
And curd, to cheer the Hero best.
8.2.19
इमे त इन्द्र सोमास्तीव्रा अस्मे सुतासः |
ime ta indra somāstīvrā asme sutāsaḥ |
10 Here, Indra, are thy Soma-draughts pressed out by us, the strong, the pure:
8.2.20
शुक्रा आशिरंयाचन्ते ||
śukrā āśiraṃyācante ||
They crave admixture of the milk.
8.2.21
तानाशिरं पुरोळाशमिन्द्रेमं सोमं शरीणीहि |
tānāśiraṃ puroḷāśamindremaṃ somaṃ śrīṇīhi |
11 O Indra, pour in milk, prepare the cake, and mix the Soma-draught.
8.2.22
रेवन्तं हि तवा शर्णोमि ||
revantaṃ hi tvā śṛṇomi ||
I hear them say that thou art rich.
8.2.23
हर्त्सु पीतासो युध्यन्ते दुर्मदासो न सुरायाम |
hṛtsu pītāso yudhyante durmadāso na surāyām |
12 Quaffed juices fight within the breast. The drunken praise not by their wine,
8.2.24
ऊधर्न नग्ना जरन्ते ||
ūdharna naghnā jarante ||
The naked praise not when it rains.
8.2.25
रेवानिद रेवत सतोता सयात तवावतो मघोनः |
revānid revata stotā syāt tvāvato maghonaḥ |
13 Rich be the praiser of one rich, munificent and famed like thee:
8.2.26
परेदु हरिवः शरुतस्य ||
predu harivaḥ śrutasya ||
High rank be his, O Lord of Bays.
8.2.27
उक्थं चन शस्यमानमगोररिरा चिकेत |
ukthaṃ cana śasyamānamaghorarirā ciketa |
14 Foe of the man who adds no milk, he heeds not any chanted hymn
8.2.28
न गायत्रंगीयमानम ||
na ghāyatraṃghīyamānam ||
Or holy psalm that may he sung.
8.2.29
मा न इन्द्र पीयत्नवे मा शर्धते परा दाः |
mā na indra pīyatnave mā śardhate parā dāḥ |
15 Give us not, Indra, as a prey unto the scornful or the proud:
8.2.30
शिक्षा शचीवः शचीभिः ||
śikṣā śacīvaḥ śacībhiḥ ||
Help, Mighty One, with power and might.
8.2.31
वयमु तवा तदिदर्था इन्द्र तवायन्तः सखायः |
vayamu tvā tadidarthā indra tvāyantaḥ sakhāyaḥ |
16 This, even this, O Indra, we implore. as thy devoted friends,
8.2.32
कण्वाुक्थेभिर्जरन्ते ||
kaṇvāukthebhirjarante ||
The Kaṇvas praise thee with their hymns.
8.2.33
न घेमन्यदा पपन वज्रिन्नपसो नविष्टौ |
na ghemanyadā papana vajrinnapaso naviṣṭau |
17 Naught else, O Thunderer, have I praised in the skilled singer's eulogy:
8.2.34
तवेदु सतोमं चिकेत ||
tavedu stomaṃ ciketa ||
On thy land only have I thought.
8.2.35
इछन्ति देवाः सुन्वन्तं न सवप्नाय सप्र्हयन्ति |
ichanti devāḥ sunvantaṃ na svapnāya spṛhayanti |
18 The Gods seek him who presses out the Soma; they desire not sleep
8.2.36
यन्ति परमादमतन्द्राः ||
yanti pramādamatandrāḥ ||
They punish sloth unweariedly.
8.2.37
ओ षु पर याहि वाजेभिर्मा हर्णीथा अभ्यस्मान |
o ṣu pra yāhi vājebhirmā hṛṇīthā abhyasmān |
19 Come hither swift with gifts of wealth - be not thou angry with us-like
8.2.38
महानिव युवजानिः ||
mahāniva yuvajāniḥ ||
A great man with a youthful bride.
8.2.39
मो षवद्य दुर्हणावान सायं करदारे अस्मत |
mo ṣvadya durhaṇāvān sāyaṃ karadāre asmat |
20 Let him not, wrathful with us, spend the evening far from us to-day,
8.2.40
अश्रीर इव जामाता ||
aśrīra iva jāmātā ||
Like some unpleasant son-in-law.
8.2.41
विद्मा हयस्य वीरस्य भूरिदावरीं सुमतिम |
vidmā hyasya vīrasya bhūridāvarīṃ sumatim |
21 For well we know this Hero's love, most liberal of the boons he gives,
8.2.42
तरिषु जातस्य मनांसि ||
triṣu jātasya manāṃsi ||
His plans whom the three worlds display.
8.2.43
आ तू षिञ्च कण्वमन्तं न घा विद्म शवसानात |
ā tū ṣiñca kaṇvamantaṃ na ghā vidma śavasānāt |
22 Pour forth the gift which Kaṇvas bring, for none more glorious do we know
8.2.44
यशस्तरं शतमूतेः ||
yaśastaraṃ śatamūteḥ ||
Than the Strong Lord with countless aids.
8.2.45
जयेष्ठेन सोतरिन्द्राय सोमं वीराय शक्राय |
jyeṣṭhena sotarindrāya somaṃ vīrāya śakrāya |
23 O presser, offer Soma first to Indra, Hero, Śakra, him
8.2.46
भरा पिबन नर्याय ||
bharā piban naryāya ||
The Friend of man, that he may drink;
8.2.47
यो वेदिष्ठो अव्यथिष्वश्वावन्तं जरित्र्भ्यः |
yo vediṣṭho avyathiṣvaśvāvantaṃ jaritṛbhyaḥ |
24 Who, in untroubled ways, is best provider, for his worshippers.
8.2.48
वाजं सतोत्र्भ्यो गोमन्तम ||
vājaṃ stotṛbhyo ghomantam ||
Of strength in horses and in kine.
8.2.49
पन्यम-पन्यमित सोतार आ धावत मद्याय |
panyam-panyamit sotāra ā dhāvata madyāya |
25 Pressers, for him blend Soma juice, each draught most excellent, for him
8.2.50
सोमं वीरय शूरय ||
somaṃ vīraya śūraya ||
The Brave, the Hero, for his joy.
8.2.51
पाता वर्त्रहा सुतमा घा गमन नारे अस्मत |
pātā vṛtrahā sutamā ghā ghaman nāre asmat |
26 The Vṛtra-slayer drinks the juice. May he who gives a hundred aids
8.2.52
नि यमते शतमूतिः ||
ni yamate śatamūtiḥ ||
Approach, nor stay afar from us.
8.2.53
एह हरी बरह्मयुजा शग्मा वक्षतः सखायम |
eha harī brahmayujā śaghmā vakṣataḥ sakhāyam |
27 May the strong Bay Steeds, yoked by prayer, bring hither unto us our Friend,
8.2.54
गीर्भिःश्रुतं गिर्वणसम ||
ghīrbhiḥśrutaṃ ghirvaṇasam ||
Lover of Song, renowned by songs.
8.2.55
सवादवः सोमा आ याहि शरीताः सोमा आ याहि |
svādavaḥ somā ā yāhi śrītāḥ somā ā yāhi |
28 Sweet are the Soma juices, come! Blent are the Soma juices, come!
8.2.56
शिप्रिन्न्र्षीवः शचीवो नायमछा सधमादम ||
śiprinnṛṣīvaḥ śacīvo nāyamachā sadhamādam ||
Ṛṣi-like, mighty, fair of cheek, come hither quickly to the feast.
8.2.57
सतुतश्च यास्त्वा वर्धन्ति महे राधसे नर्म्णाय |
stutaśca yāstvā vardhanti mahe rādhase nṛmṇāya |
29 And lauds which strengthen thee for great bounty and valour, and exalt
8.2.58
इन्द्रकारिणं वर्धन्तः ||
indrakāriṇaṃ vṛdhantaḥ ||
Indra who doeth glorious deeds,
8.2.59
गिरश्च यास्ते गिर्वाह उक्था च तुभ्यं तानि |
ghiraśca yāste ghirvāha ukthā ca tubhyaṃ tāni |
30 And songs to thee who lovest song, and all those hymns addressed to thee-
8.2.60
सत्रा दधिरे शवांसि ||
satrā dadhire śavāṃsi ||
These evermore confirm thy might.
8.2.61
एवेदेष तुविकूर्मिर्वाजानेको वज्रहस्तः |
evedeṣa tuvikūrmirvājāneko vajrahastaḥ |
31 Thus he, sole doer of great deeds whose hand holds thunder, gives us strength,
8.2.62
सनदम्र्क्तोदयते ||
sanadamṛktodayate ||
He who hath never been subdued.
8.2.63
हन्त वर्त्रं दक्षिणेनेन्द्रः पुरु पुरुहूतः |
hanta vṛtraṃ dakṣiṇenendraḥ puru puruhūtaḥ |
32 Vṛtra he slays with his right hand, even Indra, great with mighty power,
8.2.64
महान महीभिः शचिभिः ||
mahān mahībhiḥ śacibhiḥ ||
And much-invoked in many a place.
8.2.65
यस्मिन विश्वाश्चर्षणय उत चयौत्ना जरयांसि च |
yasmin viśvāścarṣaṇaya uta cyautnā jrayāṃsi ca |
33 He upon whom all men depend, all regions, all achievements, he
8.2.66
अनु घेन मन्दी मघोनः ||
anu ghen mandī maghonaḥ ||
Takes pleasure in our wealthy chiefs.
8.2.67
एष एतानि चकारेन्द्रो विश्वा यो.अति शर्ण्वे |
eṣa etāni cakārendro viśvā yo.ati śṛṇve |
34 All this hath he accomplished, yea, Indra, most gloriously renowned,
8.2.68
वाजदावा मघोनाम ||
vājadāvā maghonām ||
Who gives our wealthy princes strength.
8.2.69
परभर्ता रथं गव्यन्तमपाकच्चिद यमवति |
prabhartā rathaṃ ghavyantamapākaccid yamavati |
35 Who drives his chariot seeking spoil, from afar, to him he loves:
8.2.70
इनो वसुस हि वोळ्हा ||
ino vasusa hi voḷhā ||
For swift is he to bring men wealth.
8.2.71
सनिता विप्रो अर्वद्भिर्हन्ता वर्त्रं नर्भिः शूरः |
sanitā vipro arvadbhirhantā vṛtraṃ nṛbhiḥ śūraḥ |
36 The Sage who, winning spoil with steeds, slays Vṛtra, Hero with the men,
8.2.72
सत्यो.अविता विधन्तम ||
satyo.avitā vidhantam ||
His servant's faithful succourer.
8.2.73
यजध्वैनं परियमेधा इन्द्रं सत्राचा मनसा |
yajadhvainaṃ priyamedhā indraṃ satrācā manasā |
37 O Priyamedhas, worship with collected mind this Indra whom
8.2.74
यो भूत सोमैः सत्यमद्वा ||
yo bhūt somaiḥ satyamadvā ||
The Soma hath full well inspired.
8.2.75
गाथश्रवसं सत्पतिं शरवस्कामं पुरुत्मानम |
ghāthaśravasaṃ satpatiṃ śravaskāmaṃ purutmānam |
38 Ye Kaṇvas, sing the Mighty One, Lord of the Brave, who loves renown,
8.2.76
कण्वासोगात वाजिनम ||
kaṇvāsoghāta vājinam ||
All-present, glorified by song.
8.2.77
य रते चिद गास पदेभ्यो दात सखा नर्भ्यः शचीवान |
ya ṛte cid ghās padebhyo dāt sakhā nṛbhyaḥ śacīvān |
39 Strong Friend, who, with no trace of feet, restores the cattle to the men,
8.2.78
येस्मिन काममश्रियन ||
yeasmin kāmamaśriyan ||
Who rest their wish and hope on him.
8.2.79
इत्था धीवन्तमद्रिवः काण्वं मेध्यातिथिम |
itthā dhīvantamadrivaḥ kāṇvaṃ medhyātithim |
40 Shaped as a Ram, Stone-hurler I once thou camest hither to the son
8.2.80
मेषो भूतोऽभि यन्नयः ||
meṣo bhūto'bhi yannayaḥ ||
Of Kaṇva, wise Medhyātithi.
8.2.81
शिक्षा विभिन्दो अस्मै चत्वार्ययुता ददत |
śikṣā vibhindo asmai catvāryayutā dadat |
41 Vibhindu, thou hast helped this man, giving him thousands four times ten,
8.2.82
अष्टा परः सहस्रा ||
aṣṭā paraḥ sahasrā ||
And afterward eight thousand more.
8.2.83
उत सु तये पयोव्र्धा माकी रणस्य नप्त्या |
uta su tye payovṛdhā mākī raṇasya naptyā |
42 And these twain pouring streams of milk, creative, daughters of delight,
8.2.84
जनित्वनाय मामहे ||
janitvanāya māmahe ||
For wedlock sake I glorify.
