8.20.1
आ गन्ता मा रिषण्यत परस्थावानो माप सथाता समन्यवः |
ā ghantā mā riṣaṇyata prasthāvāno māpa sthātā samanyavaḥ |
1. LET none, Swift Travellers! check you: come hither, like-spirited, stay not far away,
8.20.2
सथिरा चिन नमयिष्णवः ||
sthirā cin namayiṣṇavaḥ ||
Ye benders even of what is firm.
8.20.3
वीळुपविभिर्मरुत रभुक्षण आ रुद्रासः सुदीतिभिः |
vīḷupavibhirmaruta ṛbhukṣaṇa ā rudrāsaḥ sudītibhiḥ |
2 Maruts, Ṛbhukṣans, Rudras come ye with your cars strong-fellied and exceeding bright.
8.20.4
इषा नो अद्या गता पुरुस्प्र्हो यज्ञमा सोभरीयवः ||
iṣā no adyā ghatā puruspṛho yajñamā sobharīyavaḥ ||
Come, ye for whom we long, with food, to sacrifice, come ye with love to Sobbari.
8.20.5
विद्मा हि रुद्रियाणां शुष्ममुग्रं मरुतां शिमीवताम |
vidmā hi rudriyāṇāṃ śuṣmamughraṃ marutāṃ śimīvatām |
3 For well we know the vigorous might of Rudra's Sons, the Martits, who are passing strong,
8.20.6
विष्णोरेषस्य मीळ्हुषाम ||
viṣṇoreṣasya mīḷhuṣām ||
Swift Viṣṇu's band, who send the rain.,
8.20.7
वि दवीपानि पापतन तिष्ठद दुछुनोभे युजन्त रोदसी |
vi dvīpāni pāpatan tiṣṭhad duchunobhe yujanta rodasī |
4 Islands are bursting forth and misery is stayed: the heaven and earth are joined in one.
8.20.8
पर धन्वान्यैरत शुभ्रखादयो यदेजथ सवभानवः ||
pra dhanvānyairata śubhrakhādayo yadejatha svabhānavaḥ ||
Decked with bright rings, ye spread the broad expanses out, when ye, Self. luminous, stirred yourselves.
8.20.9
अच्युता चिद वो अज्मन्ना नानदति पर्वतासो वनस्पतिः |
acyutā cid vo ajmannā nānadati parvatāso vanaspatiḥ |
5 Even things immovable shake and reel, the mountains and the forest trees at your approach,
8.20.10
भूमिर्यामेषु रेजते ||
bhūmiryāmeṣu rejate ||
And the earth trembles as ye come.
8.20.11
अमाय वो मरुतो यातवे दयौर्जिहीत उत्तरा बर्हत |
amāya vo maruto yātave dyaurjihīta uttarā bṛhat |
6 To lend free course, O Maruts, to your furious rush, heaven high and higher still gives way,
8.20.12
यत्रा नरो देदिशते तनूष्वा तवक्षांसि बाह्वोजसः ||
yatrā naro dediśate tanūṣvā tvakṣāṃsi bāhvojasaḥ ||
Where they, the Heroes mighty with their arms, display their gleaming omaments on their forms.
8.20.13
सवधामनु शरियं नरो महि तवेषा अमवन्तो वर्षप्सवः |
svadhāmanu śriyaṃ naro mahi tveṣā amavanto vṛṣapsavaḥ |
7 After their Godlike nature they, the bull. like Heroes, dazzling and impetuous, wear
8.20.14
वहन्ते अह्रुतप्सवः ||
vahante ahrutapsavaḥ ||
Great splendour as they show erect.
8.20.15
गोभिर्वाणो अज्यते सोभरीणां रथे कोशे हिरण्यये |
ghobhirvāṇo ajyate sobharīṇāṃ rathe kośe hiraṇyaye |
8 The pivot of the Sobharis' chariot within the golden box is balmed with milk.
8.20.16
गोबन्धवः सुजातास इषे भुजे महान्तो नः सपरसे नु ||
ghobandhavaḥ sujātāsa iṣe bhuje mahānto naḥ sparase nu ||
May they the Well-born, Mighty, kindred of the Cow, aid us to food and to delight.
8.20.17
परति वो वर्षदञ्जयो वर्ष्णे शर्धाय मारुताय भरध्वम |
prati vo vṛṣadañjayo vṛṣṇe śardhāya mārutāya bharadhvam |
9 Bring, ye who sprinkle balmy drops. oblations to your vigorous Marut company,
8.20.18
हव्या वर्षप्रयाव्णे ||
havyā vṛṣaprayāvṇe ||
To those whose leader is the Bull.
8.20.19
वर्षणश्वेन मरुतो वर्षप्सुना रथेन वर्षनाभिना |
vṛṣaṇaśvena maruto vṛṣapsunā rathena vṛṣanābhinā |
10 Come hither, O ye Mares, on your stronghorsed car, solid in look, with solid naves.
8.20.20
आ शयेनासो न पक्षिणो वर्था नरो हव्या नो वीतये गत ||
ā śyenāso na pakṣiṇo vṛthā naro havyā no vītaye ghata ||
Lightly like winged falcons, O ye Heroes, come, come to enjoy our ofrerings.
8.20.21
समानमञ्ज्येषां वि भराजन्ते रुक्मासो अधि बाहुषु |
samānamañjyeṣāṃ vi bhrājante rukmāso adhi bāhuṣu |
11 Their decoration is the same: their omaments of gold are bright upon their arms;
8.20.22
दविद्युतत्य रष्टयः ||
davidyutaty ṛṣṭayaḥ ||
Their lances glitter splendidly.
8.20.23
त उग्रासो वर्षण उग्रबाहवो नकिष टनूषु येतिरे |
ta ughrāso vṛṣaṇa ughrabāhavo nakiṣ ṭanūṣu yetire |
12 They toil not to defend their bodies from attack, strong Heroes with their mighty arms.
8.20.24
सथिरा धन्वान्यायुधा रथेषु वो.अनीकेष्वधि शरियः ||
sthirā dhanvānyāyudhā ratheṣu vo.anīkeṣvadhi śriyaḥ ||
Strong are your bows and strong the weapons in your cars, and glory sits on every face.
8.20.25
येषामर्णो न सप्रथो नाम तवेषं शश्वतामेकमिद्भुजे |
yeṣāmarṇo na sapratho nāma tveṣaṃ śaśvatāmekamidbhuje |
13 Whose name extendeth like a sea, alone, resplendent, so that all have joy in it,
8.20.26
वयो न पित्र्यं सहः ||
vayo na pitryaṃ sahaḥ ||
And life-power like ancestral might.
8.20.27
तान वन्दस्व मरुतस्तानुप सतुहि तेषां हि धुनीनाम |
tān vandasva marutastānupa stuhi teṣāṃ hi dhunīnām |
14 Pay honour to these Maruts and sing praise to them, for of the wheel-spokes of the car
8.20.28
अराणां न चरमस्तदेषां दाना मह्ना तदेषाम ||
arāṇāṃ na caramastadeṣāṃ dānā mahnā tadeṣām ||
Of these loud roarers none is last: this is their power, this moves them to give mighty gifts.
8.20.29
सुभगः स व ऊतिष्वास पूर्वासु मरुतो वयुष्टिषु |
subhaghaḥ sa va ūtiṣvāsa pūrvāsu maruto vyuṣṭiṣu |
15 Blest by your favouring help was he, O Maruts, at the earlier flushings of the morn,
8.20.30
योवा नूनमुतासति ||
yovā nūnamutāsati ||
And even now shall he be blest.
8.20.31
यस्य वा यूयं परति वाजिनो नर आ हव्या वीतये गथ |
yasya vā yūyaṃ prati vājino nara ā havyā vītaye ghatha |
16 The strong man to whose sacrifice, O Heroes, ye approach that ye may taste thereof,
8.20.32
अभि ष दयुम्नैरुत वाजसातिभिः सुम्ना वो धूतयो नशत ||
abhi ṣa dyumnairuta vājasātibhiḥ sumnā vo dhūtayo naśat ||
With glories and with war that winneth spoil shall gain great bliss, ye Shakers of the world.
8.20.33
यथा रुद्रस्य सूनवो दिवो वशन्त्यसुरस्य वेधसः |
yathā rudrasya sūnavo divo vaśantyasurasya vedhasaḥ |
17 Even as Rudra's Sons, the brood of the Creator Dyaus, the Asura, desire,
8.20.34
युवानस्तथेदसत ||
yuvānastathedasat ||
O Youthful Ones, so shall it be:
8.20.35
ये चार्हन्ति मरुतः सुदानवः समन मीळ्हुषश्चरन्ति ये |
ye cārhanti marutaḥ sudānavaḥ sman mīḷhuṣaścaranti ye |
18 And these the bounteous, worthy of the Maruts who move onward pouring down the rain-
8.20.36
अतश्चिदा न उप वस्यसा हर्दा युवान आ वव्र्ध्वम ||
ataścidā na upa vasyasā hṛdā yuvāna ā vavṛdhvam ||
Even for their sake, O Youthful Ones, with kindest heart take us to you to be your own.
8.20.37
यून ऊ षु नविष्ठया वर्ष्णः पावकानभि सोभरे गिरा |
yūna ū ṣu naviṣṭhayā vṛṣṇaḥ pāvakānabhi sobhare ghirā |
19 O Sobhari, with newest song sing out unto the youthful purifying Bulls,
8.20.38
गाय गा इव चर्क्र्षत ||
ghāya ghā iva carkṛṣat ||
Even as a plougher to his steers.
8.20.39
साहा ये सन्ति मुष्टिहेव हव्यो विश्वासु पर्त्सु होत्र्षु |
sāhā ye santi muṣṭiheva havyo viśvāsu pṛtsu hotṛṣu |
20 Who, like a celebrated boxer, overcome the challengers in every fight:
8.20.40
वर्ष्णश्चन्द्रान न सुश्रवस्तमान गिरा वन्दस्व मरुतो अह ||
vṛṣṇaścandrān na suśravastamān ghirā vandasva maruto aha ||
They who, like shining bulls, are most illustrious-honour those Maruts with thy song.
8.20.41
गावश्चिद घा समन्यवः सजात्येन मरुतः सबन्धवः |
ghāvaścid ghā samanyavaḥ sajātyena marutaḥ sabandhavaḥ |
21 Allied by common ancestry, ye Maruts, even the Cows, alike in energy,
8.20.42
रिहते ककुभो मिथः ||
rihate kakubho mithaḥ ||
Lick, all by turns, each other's head.
8.20.43
मर्तश्चिद वो नर्तवो रुक्मवक्षस उप भरात्र्त्वमायति |
martaścid vo nṛtavo rukmavakṣasa upa bhrātṛtvamāyati |
22 Even mortal man, ye Dancers breast adorned with gold, attains to brotherhood with you.
8.20.44
अधिनो गात मरुतः सदा हि व आपित्वमस्ति निध्रुवि ||
adhino ghāta marutaḥ sadā hi va āpitvamasti nidhruvi ||
Mark ye and notice us, O Maruts; evermore your friendship is secured to us.
8.20.45
मरुतो मारुतस्य न आ भेषजस्य वहता सुदानवः |
maruto mārutasya na ā bheṣajasya vahatā sudānavaḥ |
23 O Maruts, rich in noble gifts, bring us a portion of the Maruts’ medicine,
8.20.46
यूयंसखायः सप्तयः ||
yūyaṃsakhāyaḥ saptayaḥ ||
Ye Coursers who are Friends to us.
8.20.47
याभिः सिन्धुमवथ याभिस्तूर्वथ याभिर्दशस्यथाक्रिविम |
yābhiḥ sindhumavatha yābhistūrvatha yābhirdaśasyathākrivim |
24 Haters of those who serve you not, bliss-bringers, bring us bliss with those auspicious aids
8.20.48
मयो नो भूतोतिभिर्मयोभुवः शिवाभिरसचद्विषः ||
mayo no bhūtotibhirmayobhuvaḥ śivābhirasacadviṣaḥ ||
Wherewith ye are victorious and guard Sindhu well, and succour Krvi in his need.
8.20.49
यत सिन्धौ यदसिक्न्यां यत समुद्रेषु मरुतः सुबर्हिषः |
yat sindhau yadasiknyāṃ yat samudreṣu marutaḥ subarhiṣaḥ |
25 Maruts, who rest on fair trimmed grass, what balm soever Sindhu or Asikni hath,
8.20.50
यत पर्वतेषु भेषजम ||
yat parvateṣu bheṣajam ||
Or mountains or the seas contain.
8.20.51
विश्वं पश्यन्तो बिभ्र्था तनूष्वा तेना नो अधि वोचत |
viśvaṃ paśyanto bibhṛthā tanūṣvā tenā no adhi vocata |
26 Ye carry on your bodies, ye who see it all: so bless us graciously therewith.
8.20.52
कषमा रपो मरुत आतुरस्य न इष्कर्ता विह्रुतं पुनः ||
kṣamā rapo maruta āturasya na iṣkartā vihrutaṃ punaḥ ||
Cast, Maruts, to the ground our sick man's malady: replace the dislocated limb.
