8.25.1
ता वां विश्वस्य गोपा देवा देवेषु यज्ञिय |
tā vāṃ viśvasya ghopā devā deveṣu yajñiya |
1. I WORSHIP you who guard this All, Gods, holiest among the Gods,
8.25.2
रतावाना यजसे पुतदक्षसा ||
ṛtāvānā yajase putadakṣasā ||
You, faithful to the Law, whose power is sanctified.
8.25.3
मित्रा तना न रथ्या वरुणो यश्च सुक्रतुः |
mitrā tanā na rathyā varuṇo yaśca sukratuḥ |
2 So, too, like charioteers are they, Mitra and sapient Varuṇa,
8.25.4
सनात सुजाता तनया धर्तव्रता ||
sanāt sujātā tanayā dhṛtavratā ||
Sons high-born from of old, whose holy laws stand fast.
8.25.5
ता माता विश्ववेदसासुर्याय परमहसा |
tā mātā viśvavedasāsuryāya pramahasā |
3 These Twain, possessors of all wealth, most glorious, for supremest sway
8.25.6
महि जजानादितिरतावरी ||
mahi jajānāditirtāvarī ||
Aditi, Mighty Mother, true to Law, brought forth.
8.25.7
महान्ता मित्रावरुणा सम्राजा देवावसुरा |
mahāntā mitrāvaruṇā samrājā devāvasurā |
4 Great Varuṇa and Mitra, Gods, Asuras and imperial Lords,
8.25.8
रतावानाव्र्तमा घोषतो बर्हत ||
ṛtāvānāvṛtamā ghoṣato bṛhat ||
True to Eternal Law proclaim the high decree.
8.25.9
नपाता शवसो महः सूनू दक्षस्य सुक्रतु |
napātā śavaso mahaḥ sūnū dakṣasya sukratu |
5 The offspring of a lofty Power, Dakṣa's Two Sons exceeding strong,
8.25.10
सर्प्रदानू इषो वास्त्वधि कषितः ||
sṛpradānū iṣo vāstvadhi kṣitaḥ ||
Who, Lords of flowing rain, dwell in the place of food.
8.25.11
सं या दानूनि येमथुर्दिव्याः पार्थिवीरिषः |
saṃ yā dānūni yemathurdivyāḥ pārthivīriṣaḥ |
6 Ye who have gathered up your gifts, celestial and terrestrial food,
8.25.12
नभस्वतीरा वां चरन्तु वर्ष्टयः ||
nabhasvatīrā vāṃ carantu vṛṣṭayaḥ ||
Let your rain come to us fraught with the mist of heaven.
8.25.13
अधि या बर्हतो दिवो.अभि यूथेव पश्यतः |
adhi yā bṛhato divo.abhi yūtheva paśyataḥ |
7 The Twain, who from the lofty sky seem to look down on herds below,
8.25.14
रतावाना सम्राजा नमसे हिता ||
ṛtāvānā samrājā namase hitā ||
Holy, imperial Lords, are set to be revered.
8.25.15
रतावाना नि षेदतुः साम्राज्याय सुक्रतू |
ṛtāvānā ni ṣedatuḥ sāmrājyāya sukratū |
8 They, true to Law, exceeding strong, have sat them down for savran rule:
8.25.16
धर्तव्रता कषत्रिया कषत्रमशतुः ||
dhṛtavratā kṣatriyā kṣatramaśatuḥ ||
Princes whose laws stand fast, they have obtained their sway.
8.25.17
अक्ष्णश्चिद गातुवित्तरनुल्बणेन चक्षसा |
akṣṇaścid ghātuvittaranulbaṇena cakṣasā |
9 Pathfinders even better than the eye, with unobstructed sight,
8.25.18
नि चिन मिषन्ता निचिरा नि चिक्यतुः ||
ni cin miṣantā nicirā ni cikyatuḥ ||
Even when they close their lids, observant, they perceive.
8.25.19
उत नो देव्यदितिरुरुष्यतां नासत्या |
uta no devyaditiruruṣyatāṃ nāsatyā |
10 So may the Goddess Aditi, may the Nāsatyas guard us well,
8.25.20
उरुष्यन्तु मरुतो वर्द्धशवसः ||
uruṣyantu maruto vṛddhaśavasaḥ ||
The Martits guard us well,.endowed with mighty strength.
8.25.21
ते नो नावमुरुष्यत दिवा नक्तं सुदानवः |
te no nāvamuruṣyata divā naktaṃ sudānavaḥ |
11 Do ye, O Bounteous Gods, protect our dwelling lace by day and night:
8.25.22
अरिष्यन्तो निपायुभिः सचेमहि ||
ariṣyanto nipāyubhiḥ sacemahi ||
With you for our defenders may we go unharmed.
8.25.23
अघ्नते विष्णवे वयमरिष्यन्तः सुदानवे |
aghnate viṣṇave vayamariṣyantaḥ sudānave |
12 May we, unharmed, serve bountiful Viṣṇu, the God who slayeth none:
8.25.24
शरुधि सवयावन सिन्धो पूर्वचित्तये ||
śrudhi svayāvan sindho pūrvacittaye ||
Self-moving Sindhu hear and be the first to mark.
8.25.25
तद वार्यं वर्णीमहे वरिष्ठं गोपयत्यम |
tad vāryaṃ vṛṇīmahe variṣṭhaṃ ghopayatyam |
13 This sure protection we elect, desirable and reaching far,
8.25.26
मित्रो यत पान्ति वरुणो यदर्यमा ||
mitro yat pānti varuṇo yadaryamā ||
Which Mitra, Varuṇa, and Aryaman afford.
8.25.27
उत नः सिन्धुरपां तन मरुतस्तदश्विना |
uta naḥ sindhurapāṃ tan marutastadaśvinā |
14 And may the Sindhu of the floods, the Maruts, and the ASvin Pair,
8.25.28
इन्द्रो विष्णुर्मीढ्वांसः सजोषसः ||
indro viṣṇurmīḍhvāṃsaḥ sajoṣasaḥ ||
Boon Indra, and boon Viṣṇu have one mind with us.
8.25.29
ते हि षमा वनुषो नरो.अभिमातिं कयस्य चित |
te hi ṣmā vanuṣo naro.abhimātiṃ kayasya cit |
15 Because these warring Heroes stay the enmity of every foe,
8.25.30
तिग्मं नक्षोदः परतिघ्नन्ति भूर्णयः ||
tighmaṃ nakṣodaḥ pratighnanti bhūrṇayaḥ ||
As the fierce water-flood repels the furious ones.
8.25.31
अयमेक इत्था पुरूरु चष्टे वि विष्पतिः |
ayameka itthā purūru caṣṭe vi viṣpatiḥ |
16 Here this one God, the Lord of men, looks forth exceeding far and wide:
8.25.32
तस्य वरतान्यनु वश्चरमसि ||
tasya vratānyanu vaścaramasi ||
And we, for your advantage, keep his holy laws.
8.25.33
अनु पूर्वाण्योक्या साम्राज्यस्य सश्चिम |
anu pūrvāṇyokyā sāmrājyasya saścima |
17 We keep the old accustomed laws, the statutes of supremacy,
8.25.34
मित्रस्य वरता वरुणस्य दिर्घश्रुत ||
mitrasya vratā varuṇasya dirghaśrut ||
The Iong-known laws of Mitra and of Varuṇa.
8.25.35
परि यो रश्मिना दिवो.अन्तान ममे पर्थिव्याः |
pari yo raśminā divo.antān mame pṛthivyāḥ |
18 He who hath measured with his ray the boundaries of heaven and earth,
8.25.36
उभे आ पप्रौरोदसी महित्वा ||
ubhe ā papraurodasī mahitvā ||
And with his majesty hath filled the two worlds full,
8.25.37
उदु षय शरणे दिवो जयोतिरयंस्त सूर्यः |
udu ṣya śaraṇe divo jyotirayaṃsta sūryaḥ |
19 Sūrya hath spread his light aloft up to the region of the sky,
8.25.38
अग्निर्न शुक्रः समिधान आहुतः ||
aghnirna śukraḥ samidhāna āhutaḥ ||
Like Agni all aflame when gifts are offered him.
8.25.39
वचो दीर्घप्रसद्मनीशे वाजस्य गोमतः |
vaco dīrghaprasadmanīśe vājasya ghomataḥ |
20 With him who sits afar the word is lord of food that comes from kine,
8.25.40
ईशे हि पित्वोऽविषस्य दावने ||
īśe hi pitvo'viṣasya dāvane ||
Controller of the gift of unempoisoned food.
8.25.41
तत सूर्यं रोदसी उभे दोषा वस्तोरुप बरुवे |
tat sūryaṃ rodasī ubhe doṣā vastorupa bruve |
21 So unto Sūrya, Heaven, and Earth at morning and at eve I speak.
8.25.42
भोजेष्वस्मानभ्युच्चरा सदा ||
bhojeṣvasmānabhyuccarā sadā ||
Bringing enjoyments ever rise thou up for us.
8.25.43
रज्रमुक्षण्यायने रजतं हरयाणे |
ṛjramukṣaṇyāyane rajataṃ harayāṇe |
22 From Uksanyayana a bay, from Harayana a white steed,
8.25.44
रथं युक्तमसनाम सुषामणि ||
rathaṃ yuktamasanāma suṣāmaṇi ||
And from Susaman we obtained a hamessed car.
8.25.45
ता मे अश्व्यानां हरीणां नितोशना |
tā me aśvyānāṃ harīṇāṃ nitośanā |
23 These two shall bring me further gain of troops of tawny-coloured steeds,
8.25.46
उतो नु कर्त्व्यानां नर्वाहसा ||
uto nu kṛtvyānāṃ nṛvāhasā ||
The carriers shall they be of active men of war.
8.25.47
समदभीषू कशावन्ता विप्रा नविष्ठया मती |
smadabhīṣū kaśāvantā viprā naviṣṭhayā matī |
24 And the two sages have I gained who hold the reins and bear the whip,
8.25.48
महो वाजिनावर्वन्ता सचासनम ||
maho vājināvarvantā sacāsanam ||
And the two great strong coursers, with my newest song.
