8.45.1
आ घा ये अग्निमिन्धते सत्र्णन्ति बर्हिरानुषक |
ā ghā ye aghnimindhate stṛṇanti barhirānuṣak |
1. HITHERWARD! they who light flame and straightway trim the sacred grass.
8.45.2
येषामिन्द्रो युवा सखा ||
yeṣāmindro yuvā sakhā ||
Whose Friend is Indra ever young.
8.45.3
बर्हन्निदिध्म एषां भूरि शस्तं पर्थुः सवरुः |
bṛhannididhma eṣāṃ bhūri śastaṃ pṛthuḥ svaruḥ |
2 High is their fuel, great their laud, wide is their splinter from the stake,
8.45.4
येषामिन्द्रो युवा सखा ||
yeṣāmindro yuvā sakhā ||
Whose Friend is Indra ever young.
8.45.5
अयुद्ध इद युधा वर्तं शूर आजति सत्वभिः |
ayuddha id yudhā vṛtaṃ śūra ājati satvabhiḥ |

yeṣāmindro yuvā sakhā ||

आ बुन्दं वर्त्रहा ददे जातः पर्छद वि मातरम |
ā bundaṃ vṛtrahā dade jātaḥ pṛchad vi mātaram |
in fight the hero leads his army with the warrior chiefs.
8.45.8
क उग्राः के ह शर्ण्विरे ||
ka ughrāḥ ke ha śṛṇvire ||
Whose Friend is Indra ever young.
8.45.9
परति तवा शवसी वदद गिरावप्सो न योधिषत |
prati tvā śavasī vadad ghirāvapso na yodhiṣat |
4 The new-born Vtra-slayer asked his Mother, as he seized his shaft,
8.45.10
यस्ते शत्रुत्वमाचके ||
yaste śatrutvamācake ||
Who are the fierce? Who are renowned?
8.45.11
उत तवं मघवञ्छ्र्णु यस्ते वष्टि ववक्षि तत |
uta tvaṃ maghavañchṛṇu yaste vaṣṭi vavakṣi tat |
5 avas answered, He who seeks thine enmity will battle like
8.45.12
यद वीळयासि वीळु तत ||
yad vīḷayāsi vīḷu tat ||
A stately elephant on a hill.
8.45.13
यदाजिं यात्याजिक्र्दिन्द्रः सवश्वयुरुप |
yadājiṃ yātyājikṛdindraḥ svaśvayurupa |
6 And hear, O Maghavan; to him who craves of thee thou grantest all
8.45.14
रथीतमो रथीनाम ||
rathītamo rathīnām ||
Whateer thou makest firm is firm.
8.45.15
वि षु विश्वा अभियुजो वज्रिन विष्वग यथा वर्ह |
vi ṣu viśvā abhiyujo vajrin viṣvagh yathā vṛha |
7 What time the Warrior Indra goes to battle, borne by noble steeds,
8.45.16
भवा नः सुश्रवस्तमः ||
bhavā naḥ suśravastamaḥ ||
Best of all charioteers is he.
8.45.17
अस्माकं सु रथं पुर इन्द्रः कर्णोतु सातये |
asmākaṃ su rathaṃ pura indraḥ kṛṇotu sātaye |
8 Repel, O Thunder-armed, in all directions all attacks on us:
8.45.18
न यं धूर्वन्ति धूर्तयः ||
na yaṃ dhūrvanti dhūrtayaḥ ||
And be our own most glorious God.
8.45.19
वर्ज्याम ते परि दविषो.अरं ते शक्र दावने |
vṛjyāma te pari dviṣo.araṃ te śakra dāvane |
9 May Indra set our car in front, in foremost Place to win the spoil,

गमेमेदिन्द्रगोमतः ||
ghamemedindraghomataḥ ||
He whom the wicked injure not.
8.45.21
शनैश्चिद यन्तो अद्रिवो.अश्वावन्तः शतग्विनः |
śanaiścid yanto adrivo.aśvāvantaḥ śataghvinaḥ |
10 Thine enmity may we escape, and, akra, for thy bounty, rich
8.45.22
विवक्षणा अनेहसः ||
vivakṣaṇā anehasaḥ ||
In kine, may we come near to thee
8.45.23
ऊर्ध्वा हि ते दिवे-दिवे सहस्रा सून्र्ता शता |
ūrdhvā hi te dive-dive sahasrā sūnṛtā śatā |
11 Softly approaching, Thunder-armed wealthy by hundreds, rich in steeds,
8.45.24
जरित्रिभ्योविमंहते ||
jaritribhyovimaṃhate ||
Unrivalled, ready with our gifts.
8.45.25
विद्मा हि तवा धनंजयमिन्द्र दर्ळ्हा चिदारुजम |
vidmā hi tvā dhanaṃjayamindra dṛḷhā cidārujam |
12 For thine exalted excellence gives to thy worshippers each day
8.45.26
आदारिणं यथा गयम ||
ādāriṇaṃ yathā ghayam ||
Hundreds and thousands of thy boons.
8.45.27
ककुहं चित तवा कवे मन्दन्तु धर्ष्णविन्दवः |
kakuhaṃ cit tvā kave mandantu dhṛṣṇavindavaḥ |
13 Indra, we know thee breaker-down even of strong forts, winner of spoil,
8.45.28
आ तवा पणिं यदीमहे ||
ā tvā paṇiṃ yadīmahe ||
As one who conquers wealth for us.
8.45.29
यस्ते रेवानदाशुरिः परममर्ष मघत्तये |
yaste revānadāśuriḥ pramamarṣa maghattaye |
14 Though thou art highest, Sage and Bold! let the drops cheer thee when we come
8.45.30
तस्य नो वेद आ भर ||
tasya no veda ā bhara ||
To thee as to a trafficker.
8.45.31
इम उ तवा वि चक्षते सखाय इन्द्र सोमिनः |
ima u tvā vi cakṣate sakhāya indra sominaḥ |
15 Bring unto us the treasure of the opulent man who, loth to give,
8.45.32
पुष्टावन्तो यथा पशुम ||
puṣṭāvanto yathā paśum ||
Hath slighted thee for gain of wealth.
8.45.33
उत तवाबधिरं वयं शरुत्कर्णं सन्तमूतये |
uta tvābadhiraṃ vayaṃ śrutkarṇaṃ santamūtaye |
16 Indra, these friends of ours, supplied with Soma, wait and look to thee,
8.45.34
दूरादिह हवामहे ||
dūrādiha havāmahe ||
As men with fodder to the herd.
8.45.35
यच्छुश्रूया इमं हवं दुर्मर्षं चक्रिया उत |
yacchuśrūyā imaṃ havaṃ durmarṣaṃ cakriyā uta |
17 And thee who art not deaf, whose cars are quick to listen, for our aid,
8.45.36
भवेरापिर्नो अन्तमः ||
bhaverāpirno antamaḥ ||
We call to us from far away.
8.45.37
यच्चिद धि ते अपि वयथिर्जगन्वांसो अमन्महि |
yaccid dhi te api vyathirjaghanvāṃso amanmahi |
18 When thou hast listened, make our call one which thou never wilt forget,
8.45.38
गोदा इदिन्द्र बोधि नः ||
ghodā idindra bodhi naḥ ||
And be our very nearest Friend.
8.45.39
आ तवा रम्भं न जिव्रयो ररभ्मा शवसस पते |
ā tvā rambhaṃ na jivrayo rarabhmā śavasas pate |
19 When even now, when we have been in trouble, we have thought of thee,
8.45.40
उश्मसि तवा सधस्थ आ ||
uśmasi tvā sadhastha ā ||
O Indra, give us gifts of kine.
8.45.41
सतोत्रमिन्द्राय गायत पुरुन्र्म्णाय सत्वने |
stotramindrāya ghāyata purunṛmṇāya satvane |
20 O Lord of Strength, we rest on thee, as old men rest upon a staff:
8.45.42
नकिर्यं वर्ण्वते युधि ||
nakiryaṃ vṛṇvate yudhi ||
We long to have. thee dwell with us.
8.45.43
अभि तवा वर्षभा सुते सुतं सर्जामि पीतये |
abhi tvā vṛṣabhā sute sutaṃ sṛjāmi pītaye |
21 To Indra sing a song of praise, Hero of mighty valour, him

तर्म्पा वयश्नुही मदम ||
tṛmpā vyaśnuhī madam ||
Whom no one challenges to war.
8.45.45
मा तवा मूरा अविष्यवो मोपहस्वान आ दभन |
mā tvā mūrā aviṣyavo mopahasvāna ā dabhan |
22 Hero, the Soma being shed, I pour the juice for thee to drink:
8.45.46
माकीं बरह्मद्विषो वनः ||
mākīṃ brahmadviṣo vanaḥ ||
Sate thee and finish thy carouse.
8.45.47
इह तवा गोपरीणसा महे मन्दन्तु राधसे |
iha tvā ghoparīṇasā mahe mandantu rādhase |
23 Let not the fools, or those who mock beguile thee when they seek thine aid
8.45.48
सरो गौरो यथा पिब ||
saro ghauro yathā piba ||
Love not the enemies of prayer.
8.45.49
या वर्त्रहा परावति सना नवा च चुच्युवे |
yā vṛtrahā parāvati sanā navā ca cucyuve |
24 Here let them with rich milky draught cheer thee to great munificence:
8.45.50
ता संसत्सुप्र वोचत ||
tā saṃsatsupra vocata ||
Drink as the wild-bull drinks the lake.
8.45.51
अपिबत कद्रुवः सुतमिन्द्रः सहस्रबाह्वे |
apibat kadruvaḥ sutamindraḥ sahasrabāhve |
25 Proclaim in our assemblies what deeds, new and ancient, far away,
8.45.52
अत्रादेदिष्ट पौंस्यम ||
atrādediṣṭa pauṃsyam ||
The Vtra-slayer hath achieved.
8.45.53
सत्यं तत तुर्वशे यदौ विदानो अह्नवाय्यम |
satyaṃ tat turvaśe yadau vidāno ahnavāyyam |
26 In battle of a thousand arms Indra drank Kadr's Soma juice:
8.45.54
वयानट तुर्वणे शमि ||
vyānaṭ turvaṇe śami ||
There he displayed his manly might.
8.45.55
तरणिं वो जनानां तरदं वाजस्य गोमतः |
taraṇiṃ vo janānāṃ tradaṃ vājasya ghomataḥ |
27 True undeniable strength he found in Yadu and in Turvaa,
8.45.56
समानमु पर शंसिषम ||
samānamu pra śaṃsiṣam ||
And conquered through the sacrifice.
8.45.57
रभुक्षणं न वर्तव उक्थेषु तुग्र्याव्र्धम |
ṛbhukṣaṇaṃ na vartava uktheṣu tughryāvṛdham |
28 Him have I magnified, our Lord in, common, Guardian of your folk,
8.45.58
इन्द्रं सोमेसचा सुते ||
indraṃ somesacā sute ||
Discloser of great wealth in kine;
8.45.59
यः कर्न्तदिद वि योन्यं तरिशोकाय गिरिं पर्थुम |
yaḥ kṛntadid vi yonyaṃ triśokāya ghiriṃ pṛthum |
29 bhukan, not to be restrained, who strengthened Tugra's son in lauds,
8.45.60
गोभ्यो गातुं निरेतवे ||
ghobhyo ghātuṃ niretave ||
Indra beside the flowing juice;
8.45.61
यद दधिषे मनस्यसि मन्दानः परेदियक्षसि |
yad dadhiṣe manasyasi mandānaḥ prediyakṣasi |
30 Who for Trioka clave the hill that formed a wide receptacle,
8.45.62
मा तत करिन्द्र मर्ळय ||
mā tat karindra mṛḷaya ||
So that the cows might issue forth.
8.45.63
दभ्रं चिद धि तवावतः कर्तं शर्ण्वे अधि कषमि |
dabhraṃ cid dhi tvāvataḥ kṛtaṃ śṛṇve adhi kṣami |
31 Whateer thy plan or purpose be, whateer, in transport, thou wouldst do,

जिगात्विन्द्र ते मनः ||
jighātvindra te manaḥ ||
Do it not, Indra, but be kind.
8.45.65
तवेदु ताः सुकीर्तयो.असन्नुत परशस्तयः |
tavedu tāḥ sukīrtayo.asannuta praśastayaḥ |
32 But little hath been heard of done upon the earth by one like thee i
8.45.66
यदिन्द्र मर्ळयासि नः ||
yadindra mṛḷayāsi naḥ ||
Let thine heart, Indra, turn to us.
8.45.67
मा न एकस्मिन्नागसि मा दवयोरुत तरिषु |
mā na ekasminnāghasi mā dvayoruta triṣu |
33 Thine then shall be this high renown, thine shall these lofty praises be,
8.45.68
वधीर्मा शूर भूरिषु ||
vadhīrmā śūra bhūriṣu ||
When, Indra, thou art kind to us.
8.45.69
बिभया हि तवावत उग्रादभिप्रभङगिणः |
bibhayā hi tvāvata ughrādabhiprabhaṅghiṇaḥ |
34 Not for one trespass, not for two, O Hero, slay us, nor for three,
8.45.70
दस्मादहम्र्तीषहः ||
dasmādahamṛtīṣahaḥ ||
Nor yet for many trespasses.
8.45.71
मा सख्युः शूनमा विदे मा पुत्रस्य परभूवसो |
mā sakhyuḥ śūnamā vide mā putrasya prabhūvaso |
35 I fear one powerful like thee, the crusher-down of enemies,
8.45.72
आव्र्त्वद भूतु ते मनः ||
āvṛtvad bhūtu te manaḥ ||
Mighty, repelling all attacks.
8.45.73
को नु मर्या अमिथितः सखा सखायमब्रवीत |
ko nu maryā amithitaḥ sakhā sakhāyamabravīt |
36 O wealthy God, neer may I live to see my friend or son in need:
8.45.74
जहा को अस्मदीषते ||
jahā ko asmadīṣate ||
Hitherward let thy heart be turned.
8.45.75
एवारे वर्षभा सुते.असिन्वन भूर्यावयः |
evāre vṛṣabhā sute.asinvan bhūryāvayaḥ |
37 What friend, O people, unprovoked, hath ever said unto a friend,
8.45.76
शवघ्नीव निवता चरन ||
śvaghnīva nivatā caran ||
He turns and leaves us in distress?
8.45.77
आ त एता वचोयुजा हरी गर्भ्णे सुमद्रथा |
ā ta etā vacoyujā harī ghṛbhṇe sumadrathā |
38 Hero, insatiate enjoy this Soma juice so near to thee,
8.45.78
यदीं बरह्मभ्य इद ददः ||
yadīṃ brahmabhya id dadaḥ ||
Even as a hunter rushing down.
8.45.79
भिन्धि विश्वा अप दविषः परि बाधो जही मर्धः |
bhindhi viśvā apa dviṣaḥ pari bādho jahī mṛdhaḥ |
39 Hither I draw those Bays of thine yoked
8.45.80
वसुस्पार्हं तदा भर ||
vasuspārhaṃ tadā bhara ||
by our hymn, with splendid car,
8.45.81
यद वीळाविन्द्र यत सथिरे यत पर्शाने पराभ्र्तम |
yad vīḷāvindra yat sthire yat parśāne parābhṛtam |
That thou mayst give unto the priests.
8.45.82
वसुस्पार्हं तदा भर ||
vasuspārhaṃ tadā bhara ||
40 Drive all our enemies away, smite down the foes who press around,
8.45.83
यस्य ते विश्वमानुषो भूरेर्दत्तस्य वेदति |
yasya te viśvamānuṣo bhūrerdattasya vedati |
And bring the wealth for which we long:
8.45.84
वसु सपार्हं तदा भर ||
vasu spārhaṃ tadā bhara ||
