8.6.1
महानिन्द्रो य ओजसा पर्जन्यो वर्ष्टिमानिव |
mahānindro ya ojasā parjanyo vṛṣṭimāniva |
1. INDRA, great in his power and might, and like Parjanya rich in rain,
8.6.2
सतोमैर्वत्सस्य वाव्र्धे ||
stomairvatsasya vāvṛdhe ||
Is magnified by Vatsa's lauds.
8.6.3
परजां रतस्य पिप्रतः पर यद भरन्त वह्नयः |
prajāṃ ṛtasya piprataḥ pra yad bharanta vahnayaḥ |
2 When the priests, strengthening the Son of Holy Law, present their gifts,
8.6.4
विप्रा रतस्य वाहसा ||
viprā ṛtasya vāhasā ||
Singers with Order's hymn of praiser.
8.6.5
कण्वा इन्द्रं यदक्रत सतोमैर्यज्ञस्य साधनम |
kaṇvā indraṃ yadakrata stomairyajñasya sādhanam |
3 Since Kaṇvas with their lauds have made Indra complete the sacrifice.
8.6.6
जामिब्रुवत आयुधम ||
jāmibruvata āyudham ||
Words are their own appropriate arms.
8.6.7
समस्य मन्यवे विशो विश्वा नमन्त कर्ष्टयः |
samasya manyave viśo viśvā namanta kṛṣṭayaḥ |
4 Before his hot displeasure all the peoples, all the men, bow down,
8.6.8
समुद्रायेव सिन्धवः ||
samudrāyeva sindhavaḥ ||
As rivers bow them to the sea.
8.6.9
ओजस्तदस्य तित्विष उभे यद समवर्तयत |
ojastadasya titviṣa ubhe yad samavartayat |
5 This power of his shone brightly forth when Indra brought together, like
8.6.10
इन्द्रश्चर्मेवरोदसी ||
indraścarmevarodasī ||
A skin, the worlds of heaven and earth.
8.6.11
वि चिद वर्त्रस्य दोधतो वज्रेण शतपर्वणा |
vi cid vṛtrasya dodhato vajreṇa śataparvaṇā |
6 The fiercely-moving Vṛtra's head he severed with his thunderbolt,
8.6.12
शिरो बिभेदव्र्ष्णिना ||
śiro bibhedavṛṣṇinā ||
His mighty hundred-knotted bolt.
8.6.13
इमा अभि पर णोनुमो विपामग्रेषु धीतयः |
imā abhi pra ṇonumo vipāmaghreṣu dhītayaḥ |
7 Here are-we sing them loudly forth-our thoughts among-the best of songs.
8.6.14
अग्नेः शोचिर्न दिद्युतः ||
aghneḥ śocirna didyutaḥ ||
Even lightnings like the blaze of fire.
8.6.15
गुहा सतीरुप तमना पर यच्छोचन्त धीतयः |
ghuhā satīrupa tmanā pra yacchocanta dhītayaḥ |
8 When bidden thoughts, spontaneously advancing, glow, and with the stream
8.6.16
कण्वार्तस्य धारया ||
kaṇvāṛtasya dhārayā ||
Of sacrifice the Kaṇvas shine.
8.6.17
पर तमिन्द्र नशीमहि रयिं गोमन्तमश्विनम |
pra tamindra naśīmahi rayiṃ ghomantamaśvinam |
9 Indra, may we obtain that wealth in horses and in herds of cows,
8.6.18
पर बरह्मपूर्वचित्तये ||
pra brahmapūrvacittaye ||
And prayer that may be noticed first.
8.6.19
अहमिद धि पितुष परि मेधां रतस्य जग्रभ |
ahamid dhi pituṣ pari medhāṃ ṛtasya jaghrabha |
10 I from my Father have received deep knowledge of the Holy Law
8.6.20
अहं सूर्य इवाजनि ||
ahaṃ sūrya ivājani ||
I was born like unto the Sun.
8.6.21
अहं परत्नेन मन्मना गिरः शुम्भामि कण्ववत |
ahaṃ pratnena manmanā ghiraḥ śumbhāmi kaṇvavat |
11 After the lore of ancient time I make, like Kaṇva, beauteous songs,
8.6.22
येनेन्द्रःशुष्ममिद दधे ||
yenendraḥśuṣmamid dadhe ||
And Indra's selfgains strength thereby.
8.6.23
ये तवामिन्द्र न तुष्टुवुरषयो ये च तुष्टुवुः |
ye tvāmindra na tuṣṭuvurṣayo ye ca tuṣṭuvuḥ |
12 Whatever Ṛṣis have not praised thee, Indra, or have lauded thee,
8.6.24
ममेद्वर्धस्व सुष्टुतः ||
mamedvardhasva suṣṭutaḥ ||
By me exalted wax thou strong.
8.6.25
यदस्य मन्युरध्वनीद वि वर्त्रं पर्वशो रुजन |
yadasya manyuradhvanīd vi vṛtraṃ parvaśo rujan |
13 When his wrath thundered, when he rent Vṛtra to pieces, limb by limb,
8.6.26
अपः समुद्रमैरयत ||
apaḥ samudramairayat ||
He sent the waters to the sea.
8.6.27
नि शुष्ण इन्द्र धर्णसिं वज्रं जघन्थ दस्यवि |
ni śuṣṇa indra dharṇasiṃ vajraṃ jaghantha dasyavi |
14 Against the Dasyu gusna thou, Indra, didst hurl thy during bolt:
8.6.28
वर्षाह्युग्र शर्ण्विषे ||
vṛṣāhyughra śṛṇviṣe ||
Thou, Dread one, hast a hero's fame.
8.6.29
न दयाव इन्द्रमोजसा नान्तरिक्षाणि वज्रिणम |
na dyāva indramojasā nāntarikṣāṇi vajriṇam |
15 Neither the heavens nor firmaments nor regions of the earth contain
8.6.30
न विव्यचन्त भूमयः ||
na vivyacanta bhūmayaḥ ||
Indra, the Thunderer with his might.
8.6.31
यस्त इन्द्र महीरप सतभूयमान आशयत |
yasta indra mahīrapa stabhūyamāna āśayat |
16 O Indra him who lay at length staying thy copious waters thou,
8.6.32
नि तं पद्यासु शिश्नथः ||
ni taṃ padyāsu śiśnathaḥ ||
In his own footsteps, smotest down
8.6.33
य इमे रोदसी मही समीची समजग्रभीत |
ya ime rodasī mahī samīcī samajaghrabhīt |
17 Thou hiddest deep in darkness itim, O Indra, who had set his grasp
8.6.34
तमोभिरिन्द्र तं गुहः ||
tamobhirindra taṃ ghuhaḥ ||
On spacious heaven and earth conjoined.
8.6.35
य इन्द्र यतयस्त्वा भर्गवो ये च तुष्टुवुः |
ya indra yatayastvā bhṛghavo ye ca tuṣṭuvuḥ |
18 Indra, whatever Yatis and Bhṛgus have offered praise to thee,
8.6.36
ममेदुग्र शरुधी हवम ||
mamedughra śrudhī havam ||
Listen, thou Mighty, to my call.
8.6.37
इमास्त इन्द्र पर्श्नयो घर्तं दुहत आशिरम |
imāsta indra pṛśnayo ghṛtaṃ duhata āśiram |
19 Indra, these spotted cows yield thee their butter and the milky draught;
8.6.38
एनां रतस्य पिप्युषीः ||
enāṃ ṛtasya pipyuṣīḥ ||
Aiders, thereby, of sacrifice;
8.6.39
या इन्द्र परस्वस्त्वासा गर्भमचक्रिरन |
yā indra prasvastvāsā gharbhamacakriran |
20 Which, teeming, have received thee as a life-germ, Indra, with their mouth,
8.6.40
परि धर्मेव सूर्यम ||
pari dharmeva sūryam ||
Like Sūrya who sustaineth all.
8.6.41
तवामिच्छवसस पते कण्वा उक्थेन वाव्र्धुः |
tvāmicchavasas pate kaṇvā ukthena vāvṛdhuḥ |
21 O Lord of Might, with hymns of praise the Kaṇvas have increased thy power,
8.6.42
तवां सुतास इन्दवः ||
tvāṃ sutāsa indavaḥ ||
The drops poured forth have strengthened thee.
8.6.43
तवेदिन्द्र परणीतिषूत परशस्तिरद्रिवः |
tavedindra praṇītiṣūta praśastiradrivaḥ |
22 Under thy guidance, Indra, mid thy praises, Lord of Thunder, shall
8.6.44
यज्ञो वितन्तसाय्यः ||
yajño vitantasāyyaḥ ||
The sacrifice be soon performed.
8.6.45
आ न इन्द्र महीमिषं पुरं न दर्षि गोमतीम |
ā na indra mahīmiṣaṃ puraṃ na darṣi ghomatīm |
23 Indra, disclose much food for us, like a stronghold with store of kine:
8.6.46
उत परजां सुवीर्यम ||
uta prajāṃ suvīryam ||
Give progeny and heroic strength.
8.6.47
उत तयदाश्वश्व्यं यदिन्द्र नाहुषीष्वा |
uta tyadāśvaśvyaṃ yadindra nāhuṣīṣvā |
24 And, Indra, grant us all that wealth of fleet steeds which shone bright of old
8.6.48
अग्रे विक्षुप्रदीदयत ||
aghre vikṣupradīdayat ||
Among the tribes of Nahusas.
8.6.49
अभि वरजं न तत्निषे सूर उपाकचक्षसम |
abhi vrajaṃ na tatniṣe sūra upākacakṣasam |
25 Hither thou seemest to attract heaven's fold which shines before our eyes,
8.6.50
यदिन्द्र मर्ळयासि नः ||
yadindra mṛḷayāsi naḥ ||
When, Indra, thou art kind to us.
8.6.51
यदङग तविषीयस इन्द्र परराजसि कषितीः |
yadaṅgha taviṣīyasa indra prarājasi kṣitīḥ |
26 Yea, when thou puttest forth thy power, Indra, thou governest the folk.
8.6.52
महानपार ओजसा ||
mahānapāra ojasā ||
Mighty, unlimited in strength.
8.6.53
तं तवा हविष्मतीर्विश उप बरुवत ऊतये |
taṃ tvā haviṣmatīrviśa upa bruvata ūtaye |
27 The tribes who bring oblations call to thee, to thee to give them help,
8.6.54
उरुज्रयसमिन्दुभिः ||
urujrayasamindubhiḥ ||
With drops to thee who spreadest far.
8.6.55
उपह्वरे गिरीणां संगथे च नदीनाम |
upahvare ghirīṇāṃ saṃghathe ca nadīnām |
28 There where the mountains downward slope, there by the meeting of the streams
8.6.56
धिया विप्रो अजायत ||
dhiyā vipro ajāyata ||
The Sage was manifest with song.
8.6.57
अतः समुद्रमुद्वतश्चिकित्वानव पश्यति |
ataḥ samudramudvataścikitvānava paśyati |
29 Thence, marking, from his lofty place downward he looks upon the sea,
8.6.58
यतो विपान एजति ||
yato vipāna ejati ||
And thence with rapid stir he moves.
8.6.59
आदित परत्नस्य रेतसो जयोतिष पश्यन्ति वासरम |
ādit pratnasya retaso jyotiṣ paśyanti vāsaram |
30 Then, verify, they see the light refulgent of primeval seed,
8.6.60
परो यदिध्यते दिवा ||
paro yadidhyate divā ||
Kindled on yonder side of heaven.
8.6.61
कण्वास इन्द्र ते मतिं विश्वे वर्धन्ति पौंस्यम |
kaṇvāsa indra te matiṃ viśve vardhanti pauṃsyam |
31 Indra, the Kaṇvas all exalt thy wisdom and thy manly power,
8.6.62
उतो शविष्ठ वर्ष्ण्यम ||
uto śaviṣṭha vṛṣṇyam ||
And, Mightiest! thine heroic strength.
8.6.63
इमां म इन्द्र सुष्टुतिं जुषस्व पर सु मामव |
imāṃ ma indra suṣṭutiṃ juṣasva pra su māmava |
32 Accept this eulogy of mine, Indra, and guard me carefully:
8.6.64
उत परवर्धया मतिम ||
uta pravardhayā matim ||
Strengthen my thought and prosper it.
8.6.65
उत बरह्मण्या वयं तुभ्यं परव्र्द्ध वज्रिवः |
uta brahmaṇyā vayaṃ tubhyaṃ pravṛddha vajrivaḥ |
33 For thee, O Mighty, Thunder-armed, we singers through devotionhave
8.6.66
विप्रा अतक्ष्म जीवसे ||
viprā atakṣma jīvase ||
Fashioned the hymn that we may live.
8.6.67
अभि कण्वा अनूषतापो न परवता यतीः |
abhi kaṇvā anūṣatāpo na pravatā yatīḥ |
34 To Indra have the Kaṇvas sung, like waters speeding down a slope:
8.6.68
इन्द्रं वनन्वती मतिः ||
indraṃ vananvatī matiḥ ||
The song is fain to go to him.
8.6.69
इन्द्रमुक्थानि वाव्र्धुः समुद्रमिव सिन्धवः |
indramukthāni vāvṛdhuḥ samudramiva sindhavaḥ |
35 As rivers swell the ocean, so our hymns of praise make Indra strong,
8.6.70
अनुत्तमन्युमजरम ||
anuttamanyumajaram ||
Eternal, of resistIess wrath.
8.6.71
आ नो याहि परावतो हरिभ्यां हर्यताभ्याम |
ā no yāhi parāvato haribhyāṃ haryatābhyām |
36 Come with thy lovely Bay Steeds, come to us from regions far away
8.6.72
इममिन्द्र सुतं पिब ||
imamindra sutaṃ piba ||
O Indra, drink this Soma juice.
8.6.73
तवामिद वर्त्रहन्तम जनासो वर्क्तबर्हिषः |
tvāmid vṛtrahantama janāso vṛktabarhiṣaḥ |
37 Best slayer of Vṛtras, men whose sacred grass is ready trimmed
8.6.74
हवन्ते वाजसातये ||
havante vājasātaye ||
Invoke thee for the gain of spoil.
8.6.75
अनु तवा रोदसी उभे चक्रं न वर्त्येतशम |
anu tvā rodasī ubhe cakraṃ na vartyetaśam |
38 The heavens and earth come after thee as the wheel follows Etaśa:
8.6.76
अनु सुवानास इन्दवः ||
anu suvānāsa indavaḥ ||
To thee flow Soma-drops effused.
8.6.77
मन्दस्वा सु सवर्णर उतेन्द्र शर्यणावति |
mandasvā su svarṇara utendra śaryaṇāvati |
39 Rejoice, O Indra, in the light, rejoice in Saryandyan, be Glad in the sacrificer's hymn.
8.6.78
मत्स्वा विवस्वतो मती ||
matsvā vivasvato matī ||
40 Grown strong in heaven, the Thunder-armed hath bellowed, Vṛtra-slayer, Bull,
8.6.79
वाव्र्धान उप दयवि वर्षा वज्र्यरोरवीत |
vāvṛdhāna upa dyavi vṛṣā vajryaroravīt |
Chief drinker of the Soma juice.
8.6.80
वर्त्रहा सोमपातमः ||
vṛtrahā somapātamaḥ ||
41 Thou art a Ṛṣi born of old, sole Ruler over all by might:
8.6.81
रषिर्हि पूर्वजा अस्येक ईशान ओजसा |
ṛṣirhi pūrvajā asyeka īśāna ojasā |
Thou, Indra, guardest well our wealth.
8.6.82
इन्द्र चोष्कूयसे वसु ||
indra coṣkūyase vasu ||
42 May thy Bay Steeds with beauteous backs, a hundred, bring thee to the feast,
8.6.83
अस्माकं तवा सुतानुप वीतप्र्ष्ठा अभि परयः |
asmākaṃ tvā sutānupa vītapṛṣṭhā abhi prayaḥ |
Bring thee to these our Soma-draughts.
8.6.84
शतंवहन्तु हरयः ||
śataṃvahantu harayaḥ ||
43 The Kaṇvas with their hymns of praise have magnified this ancient thought
8.6.85
इमां सु पूर्व्यां धियं मधोर्घ्र्तस्य पिप्युषीम |
imāṃ su pūrvyāṃ dhiyaṃ madhorghṛtasya pipyuṣīm |
That swells with streams of meath and oil.
8.6.86
कण्वा उक्थेन वाव्र्धुः ||
kaṇvā ukthena vāvṛdhuḥ ||
44 Mid mightiest Gods let mortal man choose Indra at the sacrifice,
8.6.87
इन्द्रमिद विमहीनां मेधे वर्णीत मर्त्यः |
indramid vimahīnāṃ medhe vṛṇīta martyaḥ |
Indra, whoe’er would win, for help.
8.6.88
इन्द्रं सनिष्युरूतये ||
indraṃ saniṣyurūtaye ||
45 Thy steeds, by Priyamedhas praised, shall bring thee, God whom all invoke,
8.6.89
अर्वाञ्चं तवा पुरुष्टुत परियमेधस्तुता हरी |
arvāñcaṃ tvā puruṣṭuta priyamedhastutā harī |
Hither to drink the Somajuice.
8.6.90
सोमपेयायवक्षतः ||
somapeyāyavakṣataḥ ||
46 A hundred thousand have I gained from Parsu, from Tirindira,
8.6.91
शतमहं तिरिन्दिरे सहस्रं पर्शावा ददे |
śatamahaṃ tirindire sahasraṃ parśāvā dade |
And presents of the Yadavas.
8.6.92
राधांसियाद्वानाम ||
rādhāṃsiyādvānām ||
47 Ten thousand head of kine, and steeds three times a hundred they bestowed
8.6.93
तरीणि शतान्यर्वतां सहस्रा दश गोनाम |
trīṇi śatānyarvatāṃ sahasrā daśa ghonām |
On Pajra for the Sāma-song.
8.6.94
ददुष पज्राय साम्ने ||
daduṣ pajrāya sāmne ||
48 Kakuha hath reached up to heaven, bestowing buffaloes yoked in fours,
8.6.95
उदानट ककुहो दिवमुष्ट्राञ्चतुर्युजो ददत |
udānaṭ kakuho divamuṣṭrāñcaturyujo dadat |
And matched in fame the Yadavas.
