8.7.1
पर यद वस्त्रिष्टुभमिषं मरुतो विप्रो अक्षरत |
pra yad vastriṣṭubhamiṣaṃ maruto vipro akṣarat |
1. O MARUTS, when the sage hath poured the Tṛṣṭup forth as food for you,
8.7.2
वि पर्वतेषु राजथ ||
vi parvateṣu rājatha ||
Ye shine amid the mountain-clouds.
8.7.3
यदङग तविषीयवो यामं शुभ्रा अचिध्वम |
yadaṅgha taviṣīyavo yāmaṃ śubhrā acidhvam |
2 When, Bright Ones, fain to show your might ye have determined on your course,
8.7.4
नि पर्वता अहासत ||
ni parvatā ahāsata ||
The mountain-clouds have bent them down.
8.7.5
उदीरयन्त वायुभिर्वाश्रासः पर्श्निमातरः |
udīrayanta vāyubhirvāśrāsaḥ pṛśnimātaraḥ |
3 Loud roaring with the winds the Sons of Pṛśni have upraised themselves:
8.7.6
धुक्षन्तपिप्युशीमिषम ||
dhukṣantapipyuśīmiṣam ||
They have poured out the streaming food.
8.7.7
वपन्ति मरुतो मिहं पर वेपयन्ति पर्वतान |
vapanti maruto mihaṃ pra vepayanti parvatān |
4 The Maruts spread the mist abroad and make mountains rock and reel,
8.7.8
यद यामं यान्ति वायुभिः ||
yad yāmaṃ yānti vāyubhiḥ ||
When with the winds they go their way
8.7.9
नि यद यामाय वो गिरिर्नि सिन्धवो विधर्मणे |
ni yad yāmāya vo ghirirni sindhavo vidharmaṇe |
5 What time the rivers and the hills before your coming bowed them down,
8.7.10
महे शुष्माय येमिरे ||
mahe śuṣmāya yemire ||
So to sustain your mighty force.
8.7.11
युष्मानु नक्तमूतये युष्मान दिवा हवामहे |
yuṣmānu naktamūtaye yuṣmān divā havāmahe |
6 We call on you for aid by night, on you for succour in the day,
8.7.12
युष्मान परयत्यध्वरे ||
yuṣmān prayatyadhvare ||
On you while sacrifice proceeds.
8.7.13
उदु तये अरुणप्सवश्चित्रा यामेभिरीरते |
udu tye aruṇapsavaścitrā yāmebhirīrate |
7 These, verily, wondrous, red of hue, speed on their courses with a roar
8.7.14
वाश्रा अधिष्णुना दिवः ||
vāśrā adhiṣṇunā divaḥ ||
Over the ridges of the sky.
8.7.15
सर्जन्ति रश्मिमोजसा पन्थां सूर्याय यातवे |
sṛjanti raśmimojasā panthāṃ sūryāya yātave |
8 With might they drop the loosened rein so that the Sun may run his course,
8.7.16
ते भानुभिर्वि तस्थिरे ||
te bhānubhirvi tasthire ||
And spread themselves with beams of light.
8.7.17
इमां मे मरुतो गिरमिमं सतोमं रभुक्षणः |
imāṃ me maruto ghiramimaṃ stomaṃ ṛbhukṣaṇaḥ |
9 Accept, ye Maruts, this my song, accept ye this mine hymn of praise,
8.7.18
इमं मे वनता हवम ||
imaṃ me vanatā havam ||
Accept, Ṛbhukṣans, this my call.
8.7.19
तरीणि सरांसि पर्श्नयो दुदुह्रे वज्रिणे मधु |
trīṇi sarāṃsi pṛśnayo duduhre vajriṇe madhu |
10 The dappled Cows have poured three lakes, meath for the Thunder-wielding God,
8.7.20
उत्सं कवन्धमुद्रिणम ||
utsaṃ kavandhamudriṇam ||
From the great cask, the watery cloud.
8.7.21
मरुतो यद ध वो दिवः सुम्नायन्तो हवामहे |
maruto yad dha vo divaḥ sumnāyanto havāmahe |
11 O Maruts, quickly come to us when, longing for felicity,
8.7.22
आ तू न उपगन्तन ||
ā tū na upaghantana ||
We call you hither from the sky.
8.7.23
यूयं हि षठा सुदानवो रुद्रा रभुक्षणो दमे |
yūyaṃ hi ṣṭhā sudānavo rudrā ṛbhukṣaṇo dame |
12 For, Rudras and Ṛbhukṣans, ye, Most Bountiful, are in the house,
8.7.24
उत परचेतसो मदे ||
uta pracetaso made ||
Wise when the gladdening draught is drunk.
8.7.25
आ नो रयिं मदच्युतं पुरुक्षुं विश्वधायसम |
ā no rayiṃ madacyutaṃ purukṣuṃ viśvadhāyasam |
13 O Maruts, send us down from heaven riches distilling rapturous joy,
8.7.26
इयर्ता मरुतो दिवः ||
iyartā maruto divaḥ ||
With plenteous food, sustaining all.
8.7.27
अधीव यद गिरीणां यामं शुभ्रा अचिध्वम |
adhīva yad ghirīṇāṃ yāmaṃ śubhrā acidhvam |
14 When, Bright Ones, hither from the hills ye have resolved to take your way,
8.7.28
सुवानैर्मन्दध्व इन्दुभिः ||
suvānairmandadhva indubhiḥ ||
Ye revel in the drops effused.
8.7.29
एतावतश्चिदेषां सुम्नं भिक्षेत मर्त्यः |
etāvataścideṣāṃ sumnaṃ bhikṣeta martyaḥ |
15 Man should solicit with his lauds happiness which belongs to them,
8.7.30
अदाभ्यस्य मन्मभिः ||
adābhyasya manmabhiḥ ||
So great a band invincible.
8.7.31
ये दरप्सा इव रोदसी धमन्त्यनु वर्ष्टिभिः |
ye drapsā iva rodasī dhamantyanu vṛṣṭibhiḥ |
16 They who like fiery sparks with showers of rain blow through the heaven and earth,
8.7.32
उत्सं दुहन्तो अक्षितम ||
utsaṃ duhanto akṣitam ||
Milking the spring that never fails.
8.7.33
उदु सवानेभिरीरत उद रथैरुदु वायुभिः |
udu svānebhirīrata ud rathairudu vāyubhiḥ |
17 With chariots and tumultuous roar, with tempests and with hymns of praise
8.7.34
उत सतोमैः पर्श्निमातरः ||
ut stomaiḥ pṛśnimātaraḥ ||
The Sons of Pṛśni hurry forth.
8.7.35
येनाव तुर्वशं यदुं येन कण्वं धनस्प्र्तम |
yenāva turvaśaṃ yaduṃ yena kaṇvaṃ dhanaspṛtam |
18 For wealth, we think of that whereby ye aided Yadu, Turvaśa,
8.7.36
राये सु तस्य धीमहि ||
rāye su tasya dhīmahi ||
And KanVa who obtained the spoil.
8.7.37
इमा उ वः सुदानवो घर्तं न पिप्युषीरिषः |
imā u vaḥ sudānavo ghṛtaṃ na pipyuṣīriṣaḥ |
19 May these our viands Bounteous Ones I that flow in streams like holy oil,
8.7.38
वर्धान काण्वस्य मन्मभिः ||
vardhān kāṇvasya manmabhiḥ ||
With Kaṇva's hymns, increase your might.
8.7.39
कव नूनं सुदानवो मदथा वर्क्तबर्हिषः |
kva nūnaṃ sudānavo madathā vṛktabarhiṣaḥ |
20 Where, Bounteous Lords for whom the grass is trimmed, are ye rejoicing now?
8.7.40
बरह्मा को वःसपर्यति ||
brahmā ko vaḥsaparyati ||
What Brahman is adoring you?
8.7.41
नहि षम यद ध वः पुरा सतोमेभिर्व्र्क्तबर्हिषः |
nahi ṣma yad dha vaḥ purā stomebhirvṛktabarhiṣaḥ |
21 Is it not there where ye of old, supplied with sacred grass, for lauds
8.7.42
शर्धान रतस्य जिन्वथ ||
śardhān ṛtasya jinvatha ||
Inspired the strong in sacrifice?
8.7.43
समु तये महतीरपः सं कषोणी समु सूर्यम |
samu tye mahatīrapaḥ saṃ kṣoṇī samu sūryam |
22 They brought together both the worlds, the mighty waters, and the Sun,
8.7.44
सं वज्रं पर्वशो दधुः ||
saṃ vajraṃ parvaśo dadhuḥ ||
And, joint by joint, the thunderbolt.
8.7.45
वि वर्त्रं पर्वशो ययुर्वि पर्वतानराजिनः |
vi vṛtraṃ parvaśo yayurvi parvatānarājinaḥ |
23 They sundered Vṛtra limb from limb and split the gloomy mountain-clouds,
8.7.46
चक्राणा वर्ष्णि पौंस्यम ||
cakrāṇā vṛṣṇi pauṃsyam ||
Performing a heroic deed.
8.7.47
अनु तरितस्य युध्यतः शुष्ममावन्नुत करतुम |
anu tritasya yudhyataḥ śuṣmamāvannuta kratum |
24 They reinforced the power and strength of Trita as he fought, and helped
8.7.48
अन्विन्द्रं वर्त्रतूर्ये ||
anvindraṃ vṛtratūrye ||
Indra in battle with the foe.
8.7.49
विद्युद्धस्ता अभिद्यवः शिप्राः शीर्षन हिरण्ययीः |
vidyuddhastā abhidyavaḥ śiprāḥ śīrṣan hiraṇyayīḥ |
25 They deck themselves for glory, bright, celestial, lightning in their hands,
8.7.50
शुभ्रा वयञ्जत शरिये ||
śubhrā vyañjata śriye ||
And helms of gold upon their heads.
8.7.51
उशना यत परावत उक्ष्णो रन्ध्रमयातन |
uśanā yat parāvata ukṣṇo randhramayātana |
26 When eagerly ye from far away came to the cavern of the Bull,
8.7.52
दयौर्न चक्रदद भिया ||
dyaurna cakradad bhiyā ||
He bellowed in his fear like Heaven.
8.7.53
आ नो मखस्य दावने.अश्वैर्हिरण्यपाणिभिः |
ā no makhasya dāvane.aśvairhiraṇyapāṇibhiḥ |
27 Borne by your golden-footed steeds, O Gods, come hither to receive
8.7.54
देवास उप गन्तन ||
devāsa upa ghantana ||
The sacrifice we offer you.
8.7.55
यदेषां पर्षती रथे परष्टिर्वहति रोहितः |
yadeṣāṃ pṛṣatī rathe praṣṭirvahati rohitaḥ |
28 When the red leader draws along their spotted deer yoked to the car.
8.7.56
यान्ति शुभ्रा रिणन्नपः ||
yānti śubhrā riṇannapaḥ ||
The Bright Ones come, and shed the rain.
8.7.57
सुषोमे शर्यणावत्यार्जीके पस्त्यावति |
suṣome śaryaṇāvatyārjīke pastyāvati |
29 Susoma, Saryakiavan, and Arjika full of homes, have they.
8.7.58
ययुर्निचक्रया नरः ||
yayurnicakrayā naraḥ ||
These Heroes, sought with downward car.
8.7.59
कदा गछाथ मरुत इत्था विप्रं हवमानम |
kadā ghachātha maruta itthā vipraṃ havamānam |
30 When, Maruts, ye come to him, the singer who invokes you thus,
8.7.60
मार्डीकेभिर्नाधमानम ||
mārḍīkebhirnādhamānam ||
With favours to your suppliant?
8.7.61
कद ध नूनं कधप्रियो यदिन्द्रमजहातन |
kad dha nūnaṃ kadhapriyo yadindramajahātana |
31 What now? where have ye still a friend since ye left Indra all alone?
8.7.62
को वः सखित्व ओहते ||
ko vaḥ sakhitva ohate ||
Who counteth on your friendship now?
8.7.63
सहो षु णो वज्रहस्तैः कण्वासो अग्निं मरुद्भिः |
saho ṣu ṇo vajrahastaiḥ kaṇvāso aghniṃ marudbhiḥ |
32 The Kaṇvas sing forth Agni's praise together with our Maruts’ who
8.7.64
सतुषेहिरण्यवाशीभिः ||
stuṣehiraṇyavāśībhiḥ ||
Wield thunder and wear swords of gold.
8.7.65
ओ षु वर्ष्णः परयज्यूना नव्यसे सुविताय |
o ṣu vṛṣṇaḥ prayajyūnā navyase suvitāya |
33 Hither for new felicity may I attract the Impetuous Ones,
8.7.66
वव्र्त्यां चित्रवाजान ||
vavṛtyāṃ citravājān ||
The Heroes with their wondrous strength
8.7.67
गिरयश्चिन नि जिहते पर्शानासो मन्यमानाः |
ghirayaścin ni jihate parśānāso manyamānāḥ |
34 Before them sink the very hills deerning themseives abysses: yea,
8.7.68
पर्वताश्चिन नि येमिरे ||
parvatāścin ni yemire ||
Even the mountains bend them down.
8.7.69
आक्ष्णयावानो वहन्त्यन्तरिक्षेण पततः |
ākṣṇayāvāno vahantyantarikṣeṇa patataḥ |
35 Steeds flying on their tortuous path through mid-air carry them, and give
8.7.70
धातारः सतुवते वयः ||
dhātāraḥ stuvate vayaḥ ||
The man who lauds them strength and life.
8.7.71
अग्निर्हि जानि पूर्व्यश्छन्दो न सूरो अर्चिषा |
aghnirhi jāni pūrvyaśchando na sūro arciṣā |
36 Agni was born the first of all, like Sūrya lovely with his light:
8.7.72
ते भानुभिर्वि तस्थिरे ||
te bhānubhirvi tasthire ||
With lustre these have spread abroad.
